This document outlines a teaching assistant's plan to use ICT tools like PowerPoint, YouTube videos, and a website to teach basic first aid skills to 4 students with social, emotional, and behavioral issues. The 8-week lesson plan aims to empower students, teach them to recognize risks and make responsible decisions, and perform basic first aid procedures. Resources include a first aid kit from St. John Ambulance and resuscitation doll. The teaching assistant evaluates that using ICT engaged the students and helped them gain a new perspective on emergency services.

2. INTRODUCTION
The school I currently work at has a small computer
suite, comprising of six computers. We have had ten
iPads delivered and are having training next week. I am a
level 3 Teaching Assistant and my main role is PSE and
nurture. My activity is for my 4 pupils all with Social
Emotional and behavioural problems, to undertake a
basis first aid course in conjunction with St Johns
Ambulance.

3. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The lifesavers award empowers the young person to be
active responsible citizens and equipped with the skills to
stay safe and healthy. They can recognise risks in different
situations and deciding how to behave responsibly,
including sensible road use, and judging what kind of
physical contact is acceptable or unacceptable. They will be
able to apply, manage and perform basic first aid
procedures, and recognise and reduce the risk of harm to
themselves and others. They will learn to get help in
emergency and risky situations. We will discuss how growth,
development, behaviour and health can be affected by diet,
drugs and disease. Working with pupils who regularly take
drugs this is imperative. Reading, Writing and Oracy is key
to this lesson, Pupils will openly discuss personal
circumstances and write about what they think of our
emergency services.

consequently the learners, to use the LNF confidently it

4. CLASS DYNAMICS
The school I work in has 20 pupils. In the nurture class, along with a
Teacher and a level one Teaching Assistant we have 4 pupils. The
pupils are all aged 11 and have been excluded from every school in the
county. The average reading age through Salford and Schonell reading
tests are 7 years of age. We use the Boxall profile to highlight our
pupils areas of social and emotional needs. Each pupil has their own
individual Educational Plan which targets areas within their literacy and
numeracy, along with their individual behavioural plan which develops
strategies to manage inappropriate behaviours.

opportunities, including acquisition of essential personal and social
skills • enjoy the best possible physical and mental, social and
emotional health, including freedom from abuse, victimisation and
exploitation • have access to play, leisure, sporting and cultural
activities • are listened to, treated with respect, and are able to have
their race and cultural identity recognised • have a safe home and a
community that supports physical and emotional wellbeing • are not
disadvantaged by any type of poverty”. We as a school follow all the
seven core aims

5. LESSON/ACTIVITY OUTLINE
The 2008 Wales Skills Based Curriculum fits perfectly into
the Young Lifesavers Award.The Young Lifesaver Scheme
allows young people to be taught through 'teaching and
learning strategies which use interactive and experiential
approaches' and 'promotes positive relationships and
self-esteem'. Pupils will gain skills have the ability to
revise, apply and reinforce necessary skills. My lesson
will be over a eight week period. The scheme of work will
cover basic first aid, drugs, and emergency services. I
have produced a booklet for all the pupils with a visual
stimulation. The St Johns Ambulance web site
http://yls.stjohnwales.org.uk/ is an excellent tool. The
web site has power points and you tube clips that fully
engaged the pupils

6. RESOURCES
I have contacted a local St Johns ambulance team
who supplied the school with a first aid kit to use in
this lesson. Next week they are bringing in the
Resuscitation Doll for the pupils to practice on. My
Lesson plan (see appendix 1) was enlarged and put
up on the board. My subject notes ( see appendix 2),
I printed off and put into pupils booklets. I
downloaded the PowerPoint and minimised, to show
later. The You Tube video was ready to play as the
pupils sat down to engage them.

8. THE EVALUATION
As a Teaching Assistant in a “normal school” ICT is essential. The school I
work in is an exception. All our pupils have complex needs. We have a very
small computer suite, and due to the damage the pupils cause to lap tops
and printers they have to be monitored closely. We have CCTV in every class,
due to the violent nature of the pupils. We are all Team Teach taught and
use positive handling on a daily basis. We experience damage to equipment
hence the low level of ICT taught at school. I decided to teach the pupils
basic first aid as we have had a spate of hospital admissions due to legal
highs. The pupils have a total disrespect of our emergency services and this
must be addressed. The lessons I have taught with the help of ICT (videos
and power point) has enabled our pupils to make their own minds up, about
the police and ambulance service. The lesson opened their minds to the fact
that there are risks in everyday life and that they are in control of their own
destiny. They can make their own decision about how to control any risks to
themselves and others. Using knowledge and understanding to make
informed choices about safety, health and wellbeing, evaluating personal
choices and making changes if necessary. Our pupils need to learn to
minimise harm in a risky situation and need to demonstrate how to help
others,
This lesson has opened an avenue to me and we have been out to find
leaflets about health and well being. The impact that this lesson have had on
the pupils have been positive. They have been engaged and learning
through power point and you tube has opened their eyes to an outside
world.

9. THE EVIDENCE
Due to 85% of our children being on the register “Child at Risk”
with Social Service and 75% of pupils LAC (looked after children) I
am unable to show photographs.
The work that the pupils produced (appendix 3)astounded me,
they were fully engaged in the lessons and through no fault of
their own they showed a respect for the police, fire service and
ambulance. The use of you tube was invaluable, the power points
were engaging and the discussions were enlightening.
