- Hello everyone and thank you for being here. Today I would like to talk with you about my findings on the impact of technology education and student Achievement. We live in an ever-changing world, there is something new in the world of technology everyday. It is important that we, as educator keep up with those changes in order to give our students the best education possible.
- The three areas in which I will cover today are; student attitude and their learning experience, teacher collaboration, and the perceptions of the stakeholders. The attitude of the student plays a huge role in how they gage their learning experience. In just a minute I will talk about how technology feeds into young minds. Teacher collaboration is very important, I know that we do team teaching already, so pairing that with technology will only aid in the success of our students. Lastly, I will discuss my findings on your perceptions as stakeholders.
- According to John Schacter, the author of The Impact of Education Technology on Student Achievement: What the most current research has to say, in an eight year study conducted by the Computer Supported International Learning Environment (CSILE), shows that advances in network technologies are making the computer a collaborative enterprise. Now, as you can see in this graph the CSILE students excel greatly in comparison to the control classroom group. CSILE maximizes student reflection and encourages progressive thought, taking into account multiple perspectives, and independent thinking skills. CSILE students also outshine students in the control group on standardized reading, language, and vocabulary tests.
- The use of enriched technology environments increases student’s enjoyment and motivation, thus creating a positive learning place. A happy student is more likely to success than one that is fighting the educational process, or board with day-to-day lecturing. Technology in the classroom also positively affects all major areas in the classroom, according to Schacter. A constructive learning environment is only the beginning. To continue on with the learning experience I would next like to talk to you about Wikis, blogs and podcasts.
- Wikis, blogs and podcast are among some of the more common technology tools out there. A Wiki is a virtual on-line collaborative classroom whose content can be edited by anyone who has access to the site. This will allow for group work with students, without having to meet. They will share ideas and dialog back and forth through the wiki website. A blog is a frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links. Blogging will allow your students to see many different applications on one site. A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and downloaded through web syndication. Students with iPods can take advantage of this learning opportunity, by just downloading the episodes on to an ipod and then listening to them while riding the bus to school.
- Know that you are familiar with the three applications I would like to talk about the advantages of them. First off, there are infinite possibilities with these technologies. You are able to bring a speaker to your classroom without actually having them class. Many times speakers do not work out because of time constraints or distance to travel during the day. With these applications a speaker can address your class without ever leaving their place of work. The flow chart on the right side of the screen illustrates the path of communication possible with the wiki, blog and podcast it was found by Inocencio Maramba and Steve Wheeler, authors of Wikis, blogs and podcasts: a new generation of Web-based tools forvirtual collaborative clinical practice and education. The technologies mentioned in this slide will not only help us improve student achievement but also help to keep our parents updated. There is no reason that we cannot allow parents access to these applications. That way they are allowed to check on their child's progress and see what they are learning about.
- With a technology push where will be some professional development that will have to take place. Teachers will have to effectively learn how to navigate through the applications. Troubleshooting will be a essential lesson to learn. If our teachers do not know the applications our dollars will be lost and poorly spent. However, we do have the days for training in our teacher workshop days. When I think of team teaching this phrase comes to mind, “Having three heads is better than having two, having two heads is better than one.” These technologies will allow us to not only team teach with the teachers in our building but in the entire district or even better with the surrounding districts. Effective teaching should not be a secret, if other districts have tricks up their sleeves that work, we should try and get in on what they are doing and see if we can implement it into our district. This would be the ultimate of sharing our findings with colleagues. We could cut down on time wasted in meetings, we could all just log on our computers right in our very own classroom, when administrators are on the road they will still be able to lead us.
- According to Have We Made Progress? Stakeholder Perceptions of Technology Education in Public Secondary Education in the United States an article from the Journal of Technology Education, the authors believe that technology education should be more closely aligned with career and technical education. The purpose of their study was to determine the perceptions of stakeholders with respect to the role and purpose of technology education in public secondary education in the United States. The primary purpose for TE, which was selected more than twice as often was CTE followed by an academic program. This study also looked at why some states allowed the Perkins federal funding to support TE while others do not. The Perkins fund was supporting TE and none of the stakeholders were ensuring that TE stayed eligible for that funding. If anything else I hope these findings bring up some positive points on why technology is so important in schools. It is people like you who allow us the opportunity to make positive changes in our schools, so please take the time to seriously consider creating a five year technology plan in our district. The students and staff will greatly benefit from this.
