DC to DC Converters
• A DC to DC converter is an electronic circuit that
converts a source of direct current (DC) from one
voltage level to another.
• DC to DC converters are used in portable electronic
devices such as cellular phones and laptop
computers, which are supplied with power from
batteries primarily.

Types of DC to DC Converters
• Buck Converter
This is a step down DC to DC voltage converter that belongs to a family
of switched mode power supply (SMPS).
A buck converter operating in a continuous conduction mode is defined
mathematically with the following equation:
D = Vo/Vi
where D=Duty cycle, Vo=output voltage, Vi=input voltage.
D=Ton/(Ton+Toff),
D=Ton/T,
T=1/f,
T=period, f=frequency of PWM.
In discontinuous conduction mode, Vo= Vi/((2L.Io/D^2.Vi.Ts) + 1)
Where L=inductance, Io=output current.

• Boost Converter
This is a step up DC to DC voltage converter that belongs to a
family of switched mode power supply (SMPS).
A boost converter operating in a continuous conduction mode is
defined mathematically with the following equation:
Vo/Vi= 1/(1-D)
where D=Duty cycle, Vo=output voltage, Vi=input voltage.
D=Ton/(Ton+Toff),
D=Ton/T,
T=1/f,
T=period, f=frequency of PWM
In discontinuous mode, Vo/Vi= (1 + Vi.D^2.T)/(2L.Io),
Where L=inductance, Io=output current

• Buck-Boost Converter
This is a step up and step down DC to DC voltage converter that
also belongs to a family of switched mode power supply (SMPS).
A buck-boost converter operating in a continuous conduction
mode is defined mathematically with the following equation:
Vo/Vi= (-D)/(1-D) , this in return yields D= Vo/(Vo-Vi)
where D=Duty cycle, Vo=output voltage, Vi=input voltage.
D=Ton/(Ton+Toff),
D=Ton/T,
T=1/f,
T=period, f=frequency of PWM

conduction mode is defined mathematically by the following
equation:
Vo/Vi= -(Vi x D^2 x T)/(2L x Io)
where D=Duty cycle,
Vo=output voltage,
Io=output current
Vi=input voltage.
D=Ton/(Ton+Toff),
D=Ton/T,
T=1/f,
T=period, f=frequency of PWM
