Poverty is caused by a lack of basic needs like food, shelter, and employment opportunities as well as disease and lack of access to education. Overpopulation, high birth rates, and large numbers of immigrants can strain countries' resources and contribute to poverty. Poverty affects society as a whole by increasing risks of war, crime and social problems. Reducing poverty requires addressing its complex underlying causes and involving all members of society in the solution.
