There are very few people in this world that haven't been exposed to the facts about what was happening in Germany during World War II. This was such a significant event in time that I believe people will still be studying about it years to come. Millions of people were murdered ruthlessly by German Nazis and it is not an even that can be easily forgotten.
Presentation made by a group of 2nd ESO students in the English as a foreign language class. The aim of the project was to work in a collaborative way to learn more about a person who had had an important role in human history.

The Suffragettes: Past and Present (2016)laurence raw
A presentation given at Hacettepe University, Department of English Language and Literature, Ankara on 8 March 2016. It looks at the origins of the Suffragette movement, and its potential "threat" to societal stability in the Edwardian era, as well as its role in helping bring about universal suffrage. The presentation ends with a short critique of the recent film SUFFRAGETTE (2015) in light of the historical evidence.
Minneapolis–St. Employment Update | December 2015Carolyn Bates
The local unemployment rate of 2.9% has hit its lowest point since 2001. Coupled with year-over-year labor force growth of 34.2 thousand jobs, Minneapolis-St. Paul currently has one of the strongest economies of any major metro in the United States.
As is typically the case, MSP’s office-using sectors dominated hiring by taking 48.0 percent of the 12-month total employment growth, while the industrial sectors experienced a loss of 1.8 percent.
At the national level, monthly growth of 211,000 jobs over the course of November represented the second consecutive month of rebound after a slowdown in mid-2015. At the current rate of growth, a mid-to-late-2016 timeframe seems likely for the first stage of tightening.

How to Be a Dictator: The Cult of Personality in the Twentieth Century Hardcover
From the Samuel Johnson Prize-winning author of Mao's Great Famine, a sweeping and timely study of twentieth-century dictators and the development of the modern cult of personality.
No dictator can rule through fear and violence alone. Naked power can be grabbed and held temporarily, but it never suffices in the long term. In the twentieth century, as new technologies allowed leaders to place their image and voice directly into their citizens' homes, a new phenomenon appeared where dictators exploited the cult of personality to achieve the illusion of popular approval without ever having to resort to elections.
In How to Be a Dictator, Frank Dikötter examines the cults and propaganda surrounding twentieth-century dictators, from Hitler and Stalin to Mao Zedong and Kim Il Sung. These men were the founders of modern dictatorships, and they learned from each other and from history to build their regimes and maintain their public images. Their dictatorships, in turn, have influenced leaders in the twenty-first century, including Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Using a breadth of archival research and his characteristic in-depth analysis, Dikötter offers a stunning portrait of dictatorship, a guide to the cult of personality, and a map for exposing the lies dictators tell to build and maintain their regimes.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Postwar Wounds - Spy Era - Article by MarieAnna Dvorak
1. Postwar Wounds – Spy Era
MarieAnna Dvorak
It has been seventy years since Czechoslovakia went from Nazism to Stalinism and StB,
the plainclothes secret (political) police, was established. For forty four years this
decidedly unchristian organization spied on, tortured and killed thousands of Czechs.
The sole aim of this force was to deal with any issues that could be considered anti-
communist. They even forged false allegations and evidence against anti-communists.
So reminiscent of those chilling words by Stalin’s notorious secret police chief, Lavrenti
Beria, who once boasted, “Show me the man and I’ll find you the crime.”
After the Russian invasion in 1968, their power in victimizing their own citizens
strengthened and the totalitarian state reached its peak. Political executions were one
of the many forms of persecution. Another form of StB ruthlessness was psychological
torture that destroyed people's self-image and created a state of helplessness and
psychological regression. This strictly fear-inducing method was the mock execution
from which suicide was an ever-open means of escape. Some of their victims lost their
lives on the border, others made it to a free country. But reaching freedom wasn't
always a victory. For many it was a mourning for home, for their families and friends
left behind.
During the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the StB managed to destroy the files of some of
their victims. The saved files of 10,000 people are now sitting in archives within the
Czech Republic. Despite the historians' criticism, approximately 19 kilometers (12
miles) of files containing both names of spies as well as their victims, are available to
public.
Many of the survivors live in different countries and their future generation will one
day ask: "Who am I? Why am I here?" The evidence of why their ancestors left the
country of their roots will be destroyed by an unwitting public and by the former
secret police that is now part of the public. Such historically significant documents of
their action perpetrated on innocent people should be preserved in archives forever.
The era behind the Iron Curtain cannot be wiped out from our history and the StB was
the leading organization.
