Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.
Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

2. The importance of posture and stretching/strengthening exercises There is sufficient evidence showing that poor posture can change the shape of the spine resulting in degenerative changes that can damage surrounding nerves and the spinal cord.1 Poor posture has been shown to significantly increase the onset of upper back, neck and shoulder pain.2 Individuals who stretch have greater range of motion and stretch tolerance.3 2
3. Ergonomically Sound Posture Shoulder joints are lined up with the hip (femoral) joints. Head lined up with center of torso. Feet on floor with knees flexed to 90⁰. When at computer keep elbows at 90⁰ and limit shoulder flexion to ≤ 25⁰. Shoulder flexion is achieved with raising your arm out in front of you, such as with using the mouse. 3
4. Neck stretch When stretching the right front neck muscles, place your left hand on your right collarbone and look to your left and raise your chin up and push down on your collarbone. Hold stretch for 5 seconds before switching to the opposite side. Stretch both sides a total of 5 times. 4
5. Neck muscle strengthening exercise Sit up straight and place hands behind your head. Gently push your head back into your hands and hold contraction for 5 seconds. Relax for 3 seconds before starting next contraction. Do a total of 10 contractions. This exercise strengthens the muscles located at the back of your neck. 5
6. Mid-thoracic strengthening exercise With 2-5lb weights stretch your arms out to the side and raise to an angle of 120⁰. Next, squeeze your shoulder blades together. Do a total of 10-15 reps. This exercise increases the strength of the muscles located between your shoulder blades. 6
7. Pectoralis stretch Lean forward using a door way as your support. Hold stretch for 10-20 seconds. Rest for a couple seconds and repeat a total of 3 times. 7
8. Warm up stretch With arms at side look up and lift upper part of chest off the floor. Hold stretch for 5-10 seconds. This is a general back stretch good for getting ready to do low back and core strengthening exercises. 8
9. Warm up cat stretches Arch your upper back and tuck your chin to chest. Hold stretch for 5-10 seconds. Next let your low back drop towards the floor and look up. Hold stretch for 5-10 seconds. 9
10. Low back strengthening exercise First, lift both your left arm and right leg off the floor at the same time and hold for 1 second. Next, lift your lift right arm and left leg off the floor and hold for 1 second. With this exercise you are in continuous motion, similar to swimming. Continue until you have achieved 15 reps on both sides. 10
11. Core strengthening exercise With your hands flat at your side, lift both your legs straight up without bending your knees as high as you can. Slowly lower your legs to the floor over a 5-7 second period of time. Do not contract your low back muscles, this can cause a minor injury. Only contract your abdominal muscles as you lower legs for stability. 11
12. Hamstring stretch Bend forward like you are touching your toes and hold stretch when you get as far as you can without causing any discomfort. Hold stretch for 30 seconds. Relax for a couple seconds and repeat two more times for a total of 3 repetitions. 12
13. Quadriceps stretch Grab at the toes of your left leg and pull back until you fell a stretch at your left front thigh (quadricep). Hold stretch for 30 seconds. Do the same with the right quadricep. Continue until you have stretched each quadricep a total of 3 times. 13
14. Gluteal/piriformis stretch Cross your left leg and rest it on your right knee. Gently push down on your left knee and lean forward until you feel a stretch in the left gluteal region. Hold stretch for 20-30 seconds. Repeat on the right side. Stretch each side 1-3 times. 14
