Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Two charactersare shownon the poster,thisimpliesthat

The long shotalsoallowsthe audience tosee the

suggestingthatitcouldbe a fatheranddaughter

The coloursthat are usedinthisfilmposterare bright,the
colourgreenmainlystandsoutwhichiseffectiveasit
symbolisesgrowthandlife.The colourgreenisalso
associatedwithfinance,banking,ambitionandjealously. By
puttingthe colourgreenandthe title of the film‘Another
Chance’togetheritsuggestthatthe two characterscouldbe
havingone lastgo at somethingthatmaychange theirlife
and couldfinancial benefitthem.Natural coloursare also
usedon the poster,thisimpliesthatthe twocharactersare
justtwo ordinarypeople.Inthe backgrounditbeginstofade
intowhite,thisiseffective because itmakesthe audience
focuson the two characters.By havinga plainandsimple
backgrounditmakesthe characters the focus point.
The title of the film‘AnotherChance’ispositionedatthe top
of the poster,justabove the twocharacters.By positioningit
at the topit will automaticallyattractedthe audienceeyes
and whentheyhave readthe title theireyeswill droptosee
the two characters.The colourof the fontisblack,thisis
effectivebecause it’splainandsimpleandthereforestands
out andwill attract the audience.The colourblack
symbolises power,mystery,deathandthe unknown,thisis
effectivebecause itsuggests that‘anotherchance’could
increase theirpower.Byusingthe colourblackitalsokeeps
the narrative to a minimumasyoudon’twant toomuch to
be givenawayotherwise the audience won’tbe intriguedto
findoutwhat happens. The title ‘AnotherChance’ suggests
to the audience thatthe twocharacters whichare seenon

tagline whichispositionedabovethe title ‘one game of

narrative of the filmwill consistsof the twocharacters

road ina quietvillage.Carsare parkedalongthe leftside of
the road facingtowardsthe camera, thisimpliesthatthe film
was producedinAmerica.Due tothe brightlightinganda
cleanenvironmentitsuggestthatit’sa friendly

because itsetsthe scene of the film.
At the bottomof the filmposterare the creditsof the film,
these are positionedinthe typical place of where theywould
be foundon anyposter.The creditsconsistof the Production
Company,editor,directorandwriter.However,due tothe
productioncompanybeingsmall theywouldn’thave be able
to affordforthe bestwritersanddirectors.The directorand
editorsaren’twell-knownandbyincludingthemonthe
posteritisn’ta verygood sellingpointforthe film.Onthe
filmposterthere isnoage certificate,againthisisn’t agood
sellingpointforthe filmasitdoesn’ttell the audience if itis
suitable forthem.

audience of the actorsin the film.Twonamesare included
whichsuggeststhese are the twoon the filmposter.Bothof
these starshave beeninotherfilms,butnotwell-knownor
popularfilms.Therefore puttingtheir namesonthe poster
isn’tverybeneficial asthe majorityof the audience wouldn’t
have heardof them,whereaswhenpopularstarnames are
sueditinstantlyattractsthe audience.
The tagline isthe unique sellingpointof the poster,not
everyfilmposterwillhave one,particularlyshortfilm
posters.Itis effective asitiscatchy and will stickinthe
audiencesheaditalsohintstowardsthe narrative.The
target audience thatissuggestedisn’tof an olderage as the
narrative impliedisn’tseenasviolent.Howeverdue tothe
narrative beingdramaanythingcouldhappen,an
unexpectedtwistislikelytobe included whichwouldmean
that the target audience wouldbe youngadults.
The tagline ‘one game of chessthat couldchange theirlivesforever’iseffective asithintstowardsthe
audience whatthe narrative couldbe.Whetherthe chessgame will change theirlivesforthe better
or worse isn’trevealed,thisagainiseffectiveasit intriguesthe audiencetofindoutwhatthe end
resultis.The colourof the fontof the tagline isblackwhichcorrespondswiththe title suggestingthat
theylink together,howeverbyusingthe colourblackit doesn’tstandout due to itbeingpositionedin
frontof the green.The word‘chess’inthe tagline,linesupwiththe whitebackgroundandtherefore
the word standsoutfrom the rest,thisis effective due toitbeingthe factorthat couldchange their
lives.The tagline alsosupportsthe dramagenre asitimpliesthattheirlife couldbe turnedupside
downor the opposite.Chessisn’tviewedasa verypopularsportand therefore createsamysteryof
how can one game of chesschange a life sodrastically,butthisiseffectiveasitmeansthat the
audience will be intriguedtofindoutwhathappens. Notmanyotherfactors on the filmpostergive
much informationawayof whatthe narrative of the filmcouldbe,butagainthisis effective because
if too much informationwasgivenwayjustfromthe filmposterthenthe audience wouldn’tneedto
watch the filmtofindoutwhat happens.
The genre of thisshortfilmisdrama and whenlookingatthisposteritisclearthat it isa drama genre,
it isshownthroughthe tagline,picture andtitle.The taglineandtitle of the filmare boththe most
effectivefeaturesof the filmastheyinstantlysuggesttothe audience whatthe filmwill consistsof.
The picture that isusedon thisfilmposterdoesn’tcorrespondwiththe narrative thatisimpliedfrom
the title andtagline,thiscanbe seenas effectiveasitcreatesa mysterywhichistypical conventionof
a drama genre film.Onthe otherhandit can alsobe seenasunsuccessful asitimpliesthatthey
haven’tputmuch thoughtintotheirposter,due tothe productioncompanybeingsmall itsuggests
that they’re notexperienced. The targetaudience of thisfilmisrevealedonthe filmposter,they
couldalsoimplythatthe productioncompanyaren’tveryexperienced.Due tonotarget audience
beingdisplayedorage certificate,itisn’tsellingthe filmverywell asthe audience don’tknow
whetherthe audience ismeantforthem.
