Poster Research
Ancillary product
I have chosen to research horror posters for my ancillary
product for this film. During my research, i have noticed
many themes during analysing some poster. i concentrated
on two posters in which have a similar story line to our short
film. My research on major film ancillary products is below:
Poster analysis
When analysing posters i looks at many different types of sub genres of horror and each sub
genres conventions. For example within the paranormal slasher films which is the genre short
film we have chosen to do the conventions on a poster of this is things such as, blood,
mysterious shadows or people with no physical features of being human. From looking at the
following posters all horror genre poster have these typical conventions.
In all/most horror posters
they will have an
antagonist/protagonist
on the front cover. Each
poster will have a
glimpse of the narrative.
on all horror
posters they
will have the
title of the
film.
Most Horror posters will
havre some credits on
like the people starring
in the film and the
director, etc.
Most horror films will
have some sort of red
annotation or colour on
their poster.
Because the poster is
used as a marketing
method they would
most likely have the
release date on it. or
when the film is on
DVD.
Although mostly red
the colours on the
poster represent the
sub genre of horror
film.
Poster Analysis
My analysis of this poster of the film “ Smiley”. i chose this
because it is the same sub genre as the short film we are
creating and has inspired some of the features in the film.
The poster was released before the film Smiley came out in 2012. It is
a American psychological slasher film directed by Michael Gallagher.
The following are
characteristics of the sub genre and what the poster shows the
audience.
- This poster obviously has the typical conventions of a any horror film
including the blood stained title of the film. The credits of the directors
name and when it is out on cinema is a normal convention of any
poster., theres is always a slogan, on this poster it is “ Evil wears a
smile”.
- The Normal convention of having the protagonist/antagonist on the
poster of the film to hint the narrative tot he audience is almost
essential when creating a poster, the character on the front would
represent most the film. As you can see on this poster their is the
antagonist on the front cover with a mask in which shows the
narrative. As you can see in the photo this antagonist is a girl, by the
hair and costume. This is a convention of all horror films to have the
main character as a woman.
Poster Analysis
• My second poster analysis is on the horror poster
of the film “ Shutter”
• This film poster follows the typical conventions of a
horror poster from first look. This includes the
antagonist as the main focus on the poster. The red
splatter which is conventional for any horror poster
as i connotes blood. Another conventional aspect
to this poster is the credits and the film title on it.
Every film poster will have the name of the film on it
as a conventional aspect. It will also have the
directors name and the producers and the sub titles
on it in a smaller font as this poster does.
• This horror poster has the aspect such as the
background of the antagonist face is another
picture, this relates to the narrative in which agrees
with the convention that the poster will always hint
the narrative to entice the audience.
