Capacity Building through a Collaborative Health Network: The African Health ...Kathleen Ludewig Omollo
On October 7, 2011, Kathleen Ludewig Omollo (University of Michigan) and Nadia Tagoe (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology) presented to the University of Michigan students in the SI 575 Community Informatics Seminar.
The mission of the African Health OER Network is to advance health education in Africa by using open educational resources (OER) developed by and targeted toward Africans in order to share knowledge, address curriculum gaps, and support communities around health education. The project began in 2008 with five institutions in Ghana and South Africa but we continue to draw in more African participants with the goal of building a continent-wide Network. This presentation will explore the rationale for harnessing OER in the health sector, the motivations for forming the Network, the services and activities of the Network, and the initial outcomes and lessons learned. Guest Nadia Tagoe will speak about the health OER project at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, one of the founding institutional partners.
This document outlines plans to develop a sustainable simulation-based medical education program in Ethiopia through a train-the-trainer approach. Barriers to past efforts included a top-down structure and lack of follow up. Next steps include distributing a source book, developing a guide book, re-analyzing stakeholders through SWOT analysis, and establishing governance under a director and patron. The goal is to train local educators to independently run simulation-based skills training programs using Ethiopia-specific content and methods.

The document discusses the Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating course. It covers the different types of surface coatings used in painting and decorating like paint, varnish, wood stain, and sealers. Paint can be waterborne or solventborne and comes in various finishes and coating systems. Varnishes are used to provide a protective coating on wood and can be solvent-based or water-based. Wood stains are dyes applied to timber that typically require a topcoat of varnish. Sealers prepare surfaces prior to decorating by sealing and protecting. The document also discusses volatile organic compounds in coatings and their regulations.

This document proposes a community health program in the Borena Zone of Ethiopia to prevent severe acute malnutrition (SAM). It involves training and certifying community health workers to identify and treat SAM at the community level through behaviors like exclusive breastfeeding. The program would partner with local organizations and facilities to train 30 community health workers per year over 3 years. It provides a proposed budget and timeline, and argues the program is feasible and sustainable because it employs local people and promotes community involvement and education to address a major public health problem in the region.
This document discusses open educational resources (OER) in Africa and their potential role in increasing access to higher education on the continent. It notes that African universities face pressure to expand access while dealing with underfunding, and that OER could help by increasing the availability of high-quality learning materials at low cost. The document outlines challenges in African higher education like dependence on lectures and limited resources. It argues that OER, if institutionalized, could help build capacity by providing educators with free or low-cost tools and content to create educational materials. A vision is presented of vibrant African universities playing a critical role through open development and sharing of intellectual capital.

Integrating Public, Dynamic Metrics Into an Open Educational Resources PlatformKathleen Ludewig Omollo
The document presents a framework for integrating public, dynamic metrics into an open educational resources (OER) platform. Interviews with faculty, librarians, and specialists revealed that readily available metrics can strengthen relationships with content authors by demonstrating impact over time. Metrics also provide justification for the effort and costs associated with content development. The framework utilizes APIs from content hosting sites like YouTube and SlideShare to aggregate usage data and integrate metrics into customizable dashboards down to the individual resource level. This allows for detection of patterns and deeper analysis of OER usage over time.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
