4. Assignment Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to examine a
position shift in fine detail that we have personally
experienced in life

By doing this, we will further grasp how exactly we
communicate our position shift with our audience
6. Thesis Statement
I have formed an opinion: religion should be absent
from public school systems due to the absence of a
universally accepted religion.
7. Before Shift
Before my shift I believed that public schools should
integrate religion with their curriculums
Some examples of these activities would include:
Prayer
Listing the Ten Commandments of Christianity in
classrooms

I adopted these feelings at an early age mainly due to
the fact that they were the feelings that the majority of
the adults in my life had
9. During the Shift
I began to realize that people at my school who didn’t
belong to Christianity were being treated as outcasts
and unfairly

What really helped me was to imagine myself in their
position and feel how awful it would be to be have to
live that way
This made it clear to me that school was a place merely
meant for gathering to learn and nothing else
11. After the Shift
After I developed my newfound stance I felt more
comfortable around those from other religions and
began to realize that religion isn’t the only thing that
defines who a person is
My stance has been reinforced even more after moving
from Corbin, KY to a more religiously diverse
university like UK
12. Methods Used for Communicating
with the Audience
Persuasion- for this particular position shift I found it
easiest to use persuasion to help in guiding my peers to
understand my newfound opinion

Clarity- It was very
important for me to be
clear to my audience on
what exactly my opinion
was so that I wouldn’t
confuse them
I tried not to bounce
around off subject too
much so that the picture
I was attempting to
paint wouldn’t become
foggy

the audience and what they’ve experienced in order to
effectively communicate
My typical audience description-
High school students
Consisting of all religions
Male or female
Not much religious diversity experience
15. Purpose of Communication
The purpose of communication is truly the most
important part, it’s the whole reason you’re actually
communicating
For me, my purpose was to both persuade people and
to educate them as well
