You could be a professional graphic designer and still make mistakes. There is always the possibility of human error. On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.

2. Armed with more than seven years’ experience interacting closely with
clients for the design and realization of their ideas, I take the lead in
numerous graphic design projects. This mostly involves guiding a creative
team to meet objectives in line with corporate marketing strategies, from
both B2B and B2C perspectives. Working closely with several design
studios, I am equally adept at collaborating with others as I am working
one-on-one with clients for the realisation of their vision. I currently work as
a senior graphic & web designer for ACE (association for consultancy and
engineering), overseeing their corporate rebranding, including the design of
their new website as well as marketing material. I also find time to take on a
variety of freelance projects, which help to fuel my passion and deepen my
knowledge of design.

4. Challenge Advisory / Web Design / Challenge Advisory is a consultancy company that aims to
promote efficiency in governments and global business. With a largely Business-to-Business (B2B)
perspective in mind, I set about rebranding Challenge Advisory to market to these organisations. The first step
in the rebranding process was to completely redesign the Challenge Advisory website from the ground up.WEB DESIGN
5. Nearly 20% of users on the Challenge Advisory website browsed on a mobile device, so I designed the
Challenge Advisory mobile website with an increased focus on these mobile users. Since the mobile site
has been live, the bounce rate on mobile devices has dropped dramatically from nearly 80% to around
35%. It is now lower than the average website bounce rate of 39%.
6. ACE / Web Design / The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) champions infrastructure to
government and other stakeholders, representing the views of around 450 members. Our members employ
over 60,000 in UK and 250,000 worldwide, contributing more than £15 billion to the UK economy. They have
worked on some of our most high-profile infrastructure to date: Crossrail, Thames Tideway, HS1 & 2, the
Queensferry Crossing and Heathrow Terminals 2/3 and 5.WEB DESIGN
7. Sinclair Fox / Web Design / Sinclair Fox is an executive search firm, with a focus on the
technological industries that are emerging in the 21st century. The Sinclair Fox corporate look required
a modern, sophisticated look with a precise finish.
8. Sinclair Fox / Mobile / For executive search on the go, the Sinclair Fox app followed a similar
design to the desktop site, only now with an added focus on the use of panels, for a simplified
mobile experience.MOBILE DESIGN
9. EMAIL MARKETING
Aico - ACE / Email marketing / Ihave designed multiple email marketing campaigns, discussing new
products and new laws. With Aico, I regularly achieved an open rate of around 20% to 30%, which helped
them to sell new products and to better appeal to new clients.
10. APP DESIGN
Puntato apple store / All the elements, colours and functions have been studied to allow the user to
experience the app in a quick and user-friendly way.
11.
12. Challenge Advisory / Corporate Materials / The Challenge Advisory corporate branding includes
notebooks, pens, erasers and business cards. These all contribute to the overall corporate face that
Challenge Advisory showcases in each of its offerings.CORPORATE MATERIAL
13. Challenge Advisory / Corporate Materials / Our digital presentation is only one aspect of the Challenge
Advisory offering, and our presentation was completed by the redesign of our print publications.BROCHURES
14. The Industrial Internet of Things fully illustrated the changes afoot in the technology industry, and this
print document gave the reader more information on industry trends. The hexagonal design scheme
used for the manufacturing event is kept here to indicate that the subjects are related, and a lighter colour
scheme allowed for a greater amount of information to be absorbed in a more comprehensive manner.
15. Another one of the aspects of Challenge Advisory’s offering are events that help to cultivate the practices of
efficiency that are the pillars of Challenge Advisory’s client service. This event looked at the technological
advancements in American manufacturing, and the modern colour scheme and design locale reflect 21st
century manufacturing and design principles.
16. TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATION
Babcock Wanson / Technical illustration / Babcock was launching a new line of boiler systems, and they
asked me to create a design that explained how this new range worked in a digestible manner. Using a
variety of programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop, I was able to deliver a design that was appealing
to the eye, all the while striving to maintain a high level of technicality.
17.
18. DATA SHEETS
Babcock Wanson / Technical illustration / Integrating the technical illustrations previously designed,
I created multiple datasheets targeted to their clients. This helped them to better understand the
performance capabilities of the company’s new machines.
19.
20. BUSINESS CARDS
Babcock Wanson / Technical illustration / Business cards are vital for making a favourable first
impression. An attractive, eye-catching business card with all the relevant contact information can capture
the attention of your prospective client and help you remain in their memory well after your initial meeting.
21. FORMS
Brammer / Forms / Brammer needed layouts for a variety of forms, for both internal and external use. The
goal of the design that I created, was to appear user friendly and easy to read.
22. CASE STUDIES
Brammer / Case studies / Brammer was in need of a way to display and share its achievements with
existing and prospective clients. To that end, the above brochure illustrates in a technical but appealing
manner key statistics that demonstrate Brammer’s level of performance.
23. NEWSLETTERS
Brammer / Newsletters / Brammer’s management wanted to find a better way to be connected with their
employees, and create deeper relationships. Working with their design and PR departments, together we
came up with a design for a 16-page newsletter that highlighted achievements and success stories from fellow
employees. Furthermore, we also integrated a monthly competition where a range of prizes could be won.
24. POSTERS
Brammer / Posters / Brammer wanted to create internal posters to facilitate communication with their
employees. I developed designs for different purposes such as a Macmillan Coffee Morning (above), as well
as Christmas and Halloween competitions.
25. FLYERS
Brammer / Flyers / I created flyers to provide a great platform for the promotion of special events, and
reach the audience in many ways. This included door-to-door mail drops, newspaper inserts, as well as
street distribution and instore distribution.
26. NEWSLETTERS
Aico / Newsletters / Aico always cares about their clients, and in order to keep them updated on the latest
fire alarm news and/or new products, I worked with the design department to create a A3 newsletter that
could be easily read, and was consistent with Aico branding.
27. MAGAZINE ADVERTS
Aico / Magazine adverts / Magazine advertising’s major benefit to businesses is its ability to display
higher quality images than what is available with either direct mail or newspapers. Higher quality images,
represented with full colour and gloss, allow a clearer picture of the product, giving the public a better idea
of the company and its offerings.
28. EVENTS BROCHURE
Aico / Event brochure / Aico is expanding to the Spanish market, and they asked me to create a brochure
that could do two things: create awareness of the dangers of fire and smoke in properties, and display the
new product range that they are promoting. As such, I designed a leaflet that is easy to understand, and
prominently highlights the most impressive features of the Aico product.
29. PULL UP BANNERS
Aico / Pull up banners / From promoting products and services at an exhibition to making a significant impact
with customers, pop up banner stands can be a great marketing tool in getting the message across. With the
upcoming event in mind, I worked with Aico to create a pull up banner that not only sufficiently described that
event, but was consistent with the company’s brand with a view to use in future applications as well.
30. NEWSPAPER ADVERT
BSMT / Newspaper advert / My “Love Story” design shown above was also featured in the national
newspaper. Here, the use of red in my design draws the reader to the corner where my design is situated.
31. BROCHURES
BSMT / Brochures / I have also designed other publications, such as flyers and programmes, pictured above.
This required more subtlety than the billboards, and a colour scheme dominated by black made for greater
sophistication under scrutiny.
32. BILLBOARDS
BSMT / Billboards / In my native Bologna, I have also worked closely with BSMT, producing a
number of static prints for them. Pictured here, “Love Story” was presented on billboards all over town,
and is 4x6m large.
