Pollution has been a problem throughout human history. Evidence from prehistoric cave paintings shows high levels of pollution from indoor fires. After World War II, pollution became a major public issue due to radioactive fallout from atomic weapons testing and events like the Great Smog of 1952 in London that killed thousands. This led to some of the first major environmental legislation like the Clean Air Act of 1956. Today, there are many forms of pollution including air, water, soil, noise, light, and thermal pollution caused by industry, vehicles, and human activities that can negatively impact both the environment and human health. International agreements like the Kyoto Protocol have aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change.
