1) Amanda Currie is a special education major hoping to become an autism specialist.
2) She discusses two things she would like to change in society: focusing more on career education in public schools rather than other classes, and increasing respect for police officers.
3) She believes the minimum wage law and first amendment are the most important political issues, as minimum wage ensures people can earn money to live, and the first amendment protects freedoms of religion, speech, press and assembly.

Response 1Chapter 4- How are our civil liberties being challeng.docxwilfredoa1
Response 1:
Chapter 4- How are our civil liberties being challenged today and how should we respond? (Use video clips/book info) Remember civil liberties are different than civil rights.
Today, our civil liberties are in a constant contest. In the crash course video, we were exposed to the distinctions between civil liberties and rights, with rights focusing on social equality and liberties on limitations of the government (hence the Bill of Rights). In today's world; abortion, assisted suicide (the other video), and owning firearms are contested heavily although many feel them essential civil liberties. America is and has always been premised on liberty, popular sovereignty, and freedom; and for proper perpetuation, there must be regular deliberation of rights, liberties, and the violations thereof. Thus, I believe the proper response is to acknowledge firstly the indispensability of such contest while allowing for the most universally beneficial solution to prevail. With these cases of civil liberties, however, there are often infringements of the civil liberties of others that add complexity. On abortion, for example, some view the mother to be rightfully at liberty of choosing the unborn child's fate because it is her body, while others declare it an infringement of the child's right to life. I did also find it interesting (and confusing) that the Bill of Rights is actually a set of liberties, they should call it the Bill of Liberties in my personal opinion.

Chapter 4- How are our civil liberties being challenged today and how should we respond? (Use video clips/book info) Remember civil liberties are different than civil rights.
Civil Liberties are the individual rights protected by the constitution against the powers of the government, which is basically just limitations on government action. Our civil liberties are being challenged today by authorities who are beating and imprisoning people due to their freedom to assemble and peacefully protest. Just 2 weeks ago 134 people were arrested as they protested to get the green new deal passed that would be good for economic and climate change. Though things happened to many people and things like this happen all the time, one of the girls had an officer put her hand down her shirt and feel through her breasts to find an identification card, which the officer then announced she didn't even need it yet and she would get it later when she is to be processed. another thing that challenges our civil liberties is Death with Dignity as it dicusses in one of the videos. a girl dying of terminal illness and to hop on a plan and move states just to get the care that she needed which is not fair to her and her family.I believe as i touched on in another topic last weeks that guns are a huge topic right now and the right to bear arms is a basic freedom that we have that is being challenged daily because it does not say who can bear arms, where, when, or who can prohibit it at any given t.

Discussion 6
The publication of poll results in the days before an election is often criticized because some say that voters are influenced to vote for the "leader" in the poll—the so-called 'bandwagon effect'. Do you think that there is any merit to this criticism?

William Chavez
Partisanship in America has always been led by the two major political parties for the most part. The two parties are republicans and democrats. These parties have represented the nation for a long time, since 1853 actually. President Fillmore was the last president in this country to have no affiliation to neither democrat nor republican but instead the Whig party (Whitehouse). The independence party which is considered a third party has been slowly rising as figure 10.1 depicts. There could be many reasons as to why this happened.
For instance, loss of faith in the democrat and republican party. As we learn in this chapter It takes a lot of consideration to “fit” into one of these partisanships. We learn that family, friends, mindset, ethics and moral dilemmas all play a role when declaring a political party. With the younger millennial generation making up a large portion of the independent party they are coming into play and they require something new. Maybe they do not believe what either party stands for, so they declare themselves independent. “Four in ten voters don’t want to be in a political party. Why? Because parties have become special interests — perhaps the biggest special interests of all” (Independent voting).
Another thing with the independent parties is that maybe they just do not want to be labeled. The millennial generation does not want to be represented by two parties typically in power. Especially with everything that is going on in the world. Deportation of illegal immigrants, separating of families, building of the wall, attacks in Syria, Iran, the whole abortion dilemma. The independent party which is considered to be conservative could be tired of the other party’s agendas. They each believe in something else. Democrats, the party that believes in equal opportunity regardless of race or lifestyle and are considered to be liberal. Republicans who tend to focus on the individualistic mindset and being conservative.
My last theory is that along with the rest of my generation, is that we don’t understand politics to the full extent. Yes, we get the parties, the powers and what comes with it. However why does the government do the things it does. If we cannot apprehend it to the fullest why declare myself something I am not. Therefore, I would side as being independent (hypothetically speaking).

Do you think college students' participation (the youth vote) made a difference in the election outcome in 2012? Do you believe this segment of the population will/can be influential in future elections? Explain.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Introductions
My name is Amanda Currie and I
am a Special Education major in
hopes to be an Autism Specialist
in the near future.
3. What motivates you?
The United States is a democracy and by
voting, you get to be apart of that and have
a say in who wins the title of President and
the Senate.
When you get a say in who is president, it
makes you feel better about who is running
this country. Granted, sometimes the
person you voted for does not always win,
but the people spoke about who they want
as their president. That is what America
relies on, a democracy voting technique.
I would like to change two things in our society;
our public school system and respect for cops
I think that public education should focus more on
education for their field. and not what a child
wears or the classes they take. There should be a
mandatory class of things people truly need to
know once they graduate and leave their parents
house.
The respect for police officers has dropped
tremendously, and it is sad because they put their
lives at risk everyday to save someone else’s life.
I would not change the respect and appreciation
for our military. It is not easy by any means, no
matter the branch they choose. I wish there were
more benefits or higher pay for fighting for our
country, but at least they are truly respected in
our society.
4. What I learned
Most of what we went over this semester, I already learned in previous
classes sadly.
The most interesting thing we talked about was the idea of someone
having too much freedom or not enough. I haven’t really ever pondered
that question, so it really got me thinking about my freedoms or lack there
of in some areas.
5. Most important political issue
I believe that the minimum wage law will be endlessly important to all generations,
especially the next one after me. In order to survive in the world, you have to make
an income somehow. Whether the minimum wage rises or drops, receiving money
to pay for food, water, housing and other bills is a must.
I believe this law is also important because hopefully it will give the next coming
generations a reason or opportunity to work for the money they get. It will truly give
them the ability to earn the money instead of just receiving it without doing
anything.
6. Most important amendment
Although it is overdramatized, the first amendment is the most important. It gives
you the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. This basically
covers almost all acts of an American citizen.
The right to any religion is truly what gets me because no matter what religion you
are, it is okay to believe in what you want. The first amendment protects you under
any sort of backlash against others saying so.
7. Lessons learned
I did learn that many states are banning the death penalty for cost reasons, when I
always thought it was because they saw how quick and easy their suffering was.
I learned more about the 10th amendment and its importance in todays society
specifically
Aside from the curriculum, I learned how to manage my time and balance school
deadlines with working a full time job. I learned how to communicate if there is a
problem, and it is okay to disagree with people because not everyone will agree
with what you say 24/7.
