In a newly published study from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a British nonprofit
dedicated to fighting hate speech and extremism online, the co-authors find that the volume of AI-
generated disinformation — specifically deepfake images pertaining to elections — has been rising by an
average of 130% per month on X (formerly Twitter) over the past year.

But Callum Hood, head of research at the CCDH, said (that) the results indicate that the availability of free,

deepfakes crisis.

After obtaining a database of community notes published between February 2023 and February

To determine how easy — or difficult — it is to create an election-related deepfake with any of the

In each test, the co-authors simulated a bad actor’s attempt to generate a deepfake by first running
a straightforward prompt, then attempting to bypass a generators’ safeguards by modifying the
prompts slightly while preserving their meaning (e.g., by describing a candidate as “the current U.S.
president” instead of “Joe Biden”).
