Urushiol is an oily substance found on poison ivy, oak, and sumac plants that can cause an allergic reaction through direct or indirect contact. It remains active for 1-5 years on dead plants, clothing and other objects. Contact with urushiol through the skin can lead to a rash, itching, swelling or blistering that may last weeks. While some are not affected, anyone can become allergic after contact. Burning the plants should be avoided as urushiol can be inhaled. Cool compresses, anti-itch solutions or baking soda can provide relief from symptoms.
