Essay about The Rocking Horse vs Lottery
Professor
ENGL 102 B54 LUO
3 February 2014 The Lottery vs. The Rocking Horse Winner
In The Rocking Horse Winner, by D. H. Lawrence, and The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, the two
authors illustrate symbols and themes throughout their stories in which one common idea is
present: perhaps winning is not always positive. The Rocking Horse Winner, by D.H. Lawrence is a
fictional story about a woman s obsession for money and the lack of love and affection she shows to
her family. Her son Paul hopes to change his mother s mind set in order to gain her love by
becoming lucky. Paul discovers a way to become lucky from a rocking horse that he receives as a
Christmas present. He perceives that this horse has magical powers, ... Show more content on

Hester tells Paul that luck is what causes you to have money. If you re lucky you have money.
That s why it s better to be born lucky than rich. If you re rich you may lose money. But if you re
lucky, you will always have money. (236) This pushes Paul to desperately seek out luck so that
his mother will be grateful for her life and provide her family with the love and affection that
they so rightfully deserve. Paul believes his rocking horse is full of magical powers, which will
help him achieve the luck he needs to gain his mother s love. While Paul rides his rocking horse,
the horse predicts the winning horse and ends up making Paul an appalling amount of money. Paul
gives his winnings to his mother who squanders it on unnecessary materialistic things. He realizes
that he must win more money to win his mother s affections. He becomes mad and frantically
searches for the next winner of the horse races. On Paul s last ride to find the last winner of the
horse race, he falls of the horse and eventually dies.
Lawrence shows many points by applying these obvious symbols: the rocking horse and the
whispering house. The wooden rocking horse symbolizes the fantasy quest that Paul takes to attain
luck. This magical mysterious wooden horse also tells Paul who will win the horse races. The
whispering house symbolizes his mother s lust for money. The house constantly haunts Paul and his
siblings with the

Argumentative Essay About Gay Adoption
Corri Fairfull
Discursive Essay Gay Adoption
Gay adoption is a subject which is widely debated. However over recent years gay adoption has
allowed for most gay couples who want to adopt young children and give them a good quality of
life, which they would have if they lived with their biological parents or a heterosexual couple, to
do so.
One positive view of gay adoption is that it gives the gay couple the chance to start their own family
and give a child in care a new start to life in a loving home. This will allow the couple to love and
care for the child just as much as they would if the child was living with their own biological
parents. Gay couples who want to adopt a child will give the same loving family home just like a
heterosexual couple or single parent would. For some children, living with a gay couple may be
something they haven t experienced before. However finding a family who love the child and
appreciate them for who they are, also encouraging them with all aspects of their life and supporting
them all the way through their life is what matters most to children.
Another positive view about gay adoption is that it means a child in care will receive the
opportunity to get the benefit of new parents who are going to give them the best possible life
with parents who are healthy, in a stable relationship and have a good financial support system in
place. Since there are many children up for adoption, gay couples often adopt children who are
older as babies

The Decision Between Quantitative And Qualitative Data
One of the most important parts of establishing a research design involves the decision between
quantitative and qualitative data. Each has its own strength and weaknesses that any successful
research design must account for. Perhaps one of the easiest distinctions between the two rests in
the sample size. While quantitative data normally involves a large n, or sample size, qualitative data
involves a much smaller sample size in comparison. This smaller sample size allows qualitative
researchers to focus more on each case, increasing the internal validity of the research, but limiting
its external validity. Quantitative based research designs reverse this. The large sample size of
quantitative data often makes it difficult for researches to establish causation among the
independent and dependent variable(s). The external validly of such designs usually offsets this
issue to some extent. Due to their large nature, and use of numerical data, quantitative research is
much more replicable when compared to their qualitative counterparts. Unfortunately, the struggle
between internal and external validity is a fundamental part of research. Even efforts to combine
the two methods to form a mixed methods research design ultimately fail to nullify the issue
completely. Keeping this in mind, a quantitative analysis is the most logical given the specific
research question and the data available. This chapter seeks to prove that there is a statistically
significant difference in

In an effort to achieve this, Bombardier Capital (BC) was formed in 1973 with a focus to
provide services of loan, asset management and leasing throughout the Americas. In 2004, BC
saw a major setback as Moody s credit evaluation section downgrades BC ranking to questionable
credit quality from moderate credit risk. At this time, Bombardier decided to get rid of Bombardier
Capital and sold this to GE Commercial Finance. Though, such downgrade has not affected its train
and plane business sections. Since then, Bombardier s main focus is on plane and train segment
and it is performing very well.

Understanding The Terminology Of The Lgbt Community
Definition Understanding the terminology of the LGBT community is often complicated. LGBT,
which was once known as the gay community, is an acronym that describes different gender
expression or identities. The acronym was created to be more inclusive and have more diverse
groups. It allowed individuals of the LGBTcommunity to fully express themselves in different
ways. The first word of the acronym is lesbian. The word lesbian is defined as an individual who
identifies as a women and who are physically and emotionally attracted to other women (Huegel,
2011). People who identify themselves as lesbian may also choose an alternative word to identify
themselves as, gay. The term gay is often used to describe both homosexual men and women
however in reference to men, gay describes men who are physically and emotionally attracted to
other men (Huegel, 2011). Men more often use the term gay when identifying themselves than
women. According to Huegel (2011), bisexual is defined as people who are emotionally and
physically attracted to people of either sex (p.9). When an individual identifies as bisexual it can
often cause complications within and outside of the LGBT community. They are often told, they
are confused about who they are, or they just cannot make up their minds, however bisexuality has
been scientifically proven as a valid identity (Huegel, 2011). The last word in the acronym is
Transgender. Transgender is also another term that has to be broken down for

Compare Gilgamesh And Oedipus
To a naked eye, comparing the two epics of Gilgamesh and Oedipus may seems to be a difficult
task. Especially considering they re derived from separate civilizations. At a glance it may seem
like the only thing these two have in common with one another is the fact they were kings.
However, when you take a closer look at these characters you notice something about the two; they
re are both suffering servants. Oedipusand Gilgamesh qualify as suffering servants due to the
emotional turmoil brought upon them by the gods for the purpose of mending their communities.
The Epic of Gilgameshstarts off very promising. We re introduced to the handsome, strong and wise
ruler of Uruk, Gilgamesh. He was godlike. Literally, he was composed of one third man and two
thirds god. However, he rules over his kingdom with an iron fist; raping women and oppressing
his subjects. From his own perspective he was living the life it didn t matter it came to the
expense of others. At least that was what he thought at the time. It all changed when he came in
contact with his friend, Enkidu. The God s heard the suffering of Gilgamesh s people, so in return
they create Enkidu to balance out Gilgamesh s character. Once the two come in contact, they were
irrespirable. Gilgamesh had a companion and formed an unspeakable friendship the wild man, but
when Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh loses his only true friend, his whole world falls apart. He is
stricken with grief. Wandering aimlessly around the forest sobbing

The Effect Of Neural Reflexes On The Gastrointestinal...
ows neural reflexes to occur solely in the gastrointestinal tract, independent of the brain and spinal
cord (Widmaier et al. 2014).
Within the tubular gastrointestinal tract, the ENS is formed by various interconnected networks,
called plexuses, of enteric neurons, glial cells, and axons (Widmaier et al. 2014). The majority of
these nerve cells are found within two different arrangements of ganglia (Fig. 1): the myenteric
(Auerbach s) plexus and the submucosal (Meissner s) plexus (Furness 2006; Guyton and Hall
2006). The nerve cells axons either synapse with additional neurons in the plexus or innervate the
smooth muscle of digestive organs (Furness 2006). Neural activity in one plexus can affect activity
in the other since some axons in one plexus synapse with neurons in the other (Fig. 1) (Widmaier et
al. 2014). Extrinsic nerve fibers from the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems can also synapse
with neurons in each of the two plexuses (Fig. 1) (Guyton and Hall 2006). Though the ENS can
function without these nerve pathways, the subsystems of the ANS can influence gastrointestinal
activity (Guyton and Hall 2006; Widmaier et al. 2014). An example would include either inhibiting
or enhancing the GI tract s motility and secretory activity through the sympathetic and
parasympathetic fibers (Widmaier et al. 2014).
The myenteric and submucosal plexuses each have different physiological functions. The myenteric
plexus spans the length of the intestinal wall and consists of

Analysis Of Anna Deavere Smith s Fires In The Mirror
My sense is that American character lives not in one place or the other, but in the gaps between
the places, and in our struggle to be together in our differences, (Anna Deavere Smith). Anna
Deavere Smith in her play, Fires in the Mirror, takes two different cultural communities and
interviews their standpoint of the conflict at hand. The underlying racism present in this
community is soon brewed into a pandemonium once the death of both a Black and Jewish
individual take place. Fires in the Mirror is a social drama that presents a breach as several
Jewish males accidentally kill a young Black boy in a car accident. Due to this incident, it causes
a crisis within the community as a Jewish man is later murdered by Black males to pursue revenge
for the cause of this breach. With a social drama following the guideline to find a redressive action
to limit the spread of the breach, Smith in her interviews portrays that this community fails to do
so. Because of this, the reintegration becomes an irreparable breach between the two. Consequently,
due to the social clash between the Black and Jewish communities, the city of Crown Heights
becomes socially segregated. Individuals interviewed in this play are heavily indulged in looking at
what segregates them from one another that it leads to individuals pointing fault or playing victim,
which inevitably will never lead to a resolution to this social crisis. Individuals that have been
interviewed have focused their energy on what segregates themselves from one another that it
restrains them from foreseeing a solution to the social crisis among their community. A major
conflict brought up throughout multiple interviews was the scene where the accident happened.
Multiple interviews have their own perspective of the situation as well as their opinion about the
different ambulances that arrives in the scene.Rabbi Joseph Speilman in No Blood in His Feet
explains, The Jewish community has a volunteer ambulance corps which is funded totally from the
nations...The EMS responded with three ambulances on the scene. They were there before the
Jewish ambulance came (69). This explain shows how in a city where the citizens are under one

Essay on Compare The Ostler and The Darkness Out There
Compare The Ostler and The Darkness Out There
In this essay I will compare two stories The Ostler, written in the
19th century by a man called Wilkie Coliins, and The Darkness Out
There, by Penelope Lively, written in the 20th century. They are both horror stories, a genre which
has been popular throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This is perhaps because, since we
are no longer scared on a daily basis, as would have been the case in medieval times, we need to
find an artificial way of creating the thrill.
I will look at the similarities and differences between the way each story is structured, the build up
of tension, the settings and the characters. First I will summarise each story and look at their 19th

The stories were written in different centuries. The Ostler was written in the 19th century and The
Darkness Out There was written in the 20th century. There are many differences between them
which make this obvious.
The most obvious of these differences is that an ostler is a profession that does not exist today.
They worked at inns, looking after the horses of travellers who were staying the night.
In The Ostler, when the main character, Isaac, discovers that his fiancГѓ e is the woman who tried
to murder him in his dream, he feels that he has to keep his word and marry her anyway, which
probably would not happen today, because people s ideas of what is right and wrong have
changed, and most people do not have such a strong sense of duty. Although the character of a
manipulative woman still appears in many stories, some aspects of Rebecca s background
would not appear in a 20th century story. She is obviously from an upper class family but has
somehow fallen . It is not clear how she came to be is the state she was when Isaac first met her,
but some of the most common ways were to get pregnant outside of marriage, or have an affair
with a married man. It is also possible that she has treated other men in the same way she treats
Isaac, and that this has somehow contributed to her downfall.
The language that is used in The Ostler also makes it clear that this is a 19th century story. Long

Virginia Woolf s Theory Of Criticism, Poststructuralism...
Virginia Woolf seemed to think that something changed forever in society and in all of us after the
Great War. She claims nothing had changed; nothing was different. [...]Before the war, people
would have said the same things, but they would have sounded different (Woolf, 1929). She couldn
t be more right: most of the concepts that had hold the western world together for centuries were
drastically altered during the 20th Century, and Literature, as a reflection of the deepest fears and
desires of our human heart, changed with it. Around the year 1915, with Einstein s theory of
relativity, the ideas of time and space were subjectivized. From its cultural impact, this theory of
Relativity expanded to the moral realm opening the door to Relativism.... Show more content on

Postructuralism claims that the person is not an independent entity, introducing the notion of the
dissolved or constructed subject; that is, that an individual doesn t make him/herself: their Identity is
shaped by social and linguistic intertwined forces. Derrida argues that by deconstructing our
intellectual universe we obtain a universe with no absolutes, a decentered or relativistic Universe.
From this moment, since the new Relativistic Society cannot define us, Identity becomes an inner
process of negotiation where each individual develops their own image of themselves. Decaux
supports this idea with his conception of Identity as one s definition of the self. On the other hand,
HarrГ© (Yardley Honess, 1987) defends the idea of the self as a mode of personal organization
constructed through the grammatical properties of language, mode that is however not subjective
or belonging to an individual order but to a social or moral order. To him, person is a social
concept and self is the inner unity to which all personal experience belongs as attributes of a
subject . Self structure is, therefore, a social

Yahweh is no longer able to protect them because they have broken their covenant with the living
God. According to one dictionary Suzerain and Vassal relationship is described as A form of
international relationship where one nation (a vassal) pays tribute to and pledges allegiance to
another nation (the suzerain). This kind of Suzerain vassal treat is very common in the ANE. The
framework of the Sinai covenant has significant affinities with suzerain vassal treaties from the
ancient Near East, specifically, the Hittite treaties of the fourteenth and thirteenth centuries BCE
and the Assyrian treaties of the seventh and sixth centuries BCE. Due to breaking the Suzerain
Vassal relationship by Hezekiah, Sennacheribsends a campaign against Judah. Lawson and
Younger mentions that The cuneiform text summarizes the campaign of Sennacherib in 701 BCE,
undertaken to quell the revolt of vassal states in the West which had broken out upon the death of
Sargon four years earlier. Breaking the treaty is a serious offense to the suzerain and consider as a
revolt and brought consequences upon the vassal. Not only that, the vassals faced curses against
them for breaking the treaty or covenant. And Hezekiah, the King of Judah relies on Egypt for help
and while under suzerain vassal relationship. (2 Kgs 18:20) Kitchen mentions Sennacherib held a
dunbar or rally of loyal vassals, who dutifully brought or sent their tribute,

Ford Pinto Unethical
Positioning of dangerous product on the market and not recalling those dangers products are
two of the main examples of an unethical behavior in the field of product marketing. If such an
unethical act is conducted by a large and well known company which on top of everything
produces cars, where safety of the drivers and other people in the traffic is one of their main, if
not the number one priority then there is every reason for this case to leave a huge impact in the
automobile world and consumers. This case will be echoing for a long time and will be
remembered for a long time. An example of a case with this magnitude happened in 1978 in the
United States of America and has not yet been forgotten.

There are eight categories regarding project failure and one of the biggest failure in the Ford
Pinto case is the quality failure. As I previously mentioned the car was developed and introduced
to the market only 25 months after they launched the project, the average time it takes is 43
months, Ford Corporation decided to take a shortcut to save time, and did not test the rear end of
the car. Even though the engineers at Ford knew the problem with the gas tank, and that it cannot
withstand a hit of 20mph they still released the car. Investing more time would allow them to
come up with a solution or find a different material that would prevent gas tanks from exploding,
bursting in the flames, and causing so many injuries. Quality is very underestimated these days,
the main goal of big corporations is to generate big amounts of revenues even if the product can
be potentially lethal for the consumers. The way to fix this problem is to implement stronger
safety regulations and make company follow them, those regulations should also be updated more
frequently especially because there are new and better innovations created practically every day
nowadays. Another big project failure Ford Corporation leaders made was to release the car
besides the insufficient testing and being aware of the flaws with the Pinto. The leaders of Ford

The Short Story The Interlopers
Many people desire to get something, and they fight each other to win their desire. They
consider each other their enemies and do whatever it takes to be better than one another. When
the enemies need help for same problem, they unite themselves to solve the problem. The short
story The Interlopers by Saki is about unification and reveals how enemies become allies in
harsh situations. Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym were enemies because Ulrich was the
owner of the forest land, and Georg was trying to steal Ulrich s forest land. They met in the
middle of the forest and tried to kill each other. However, they were trapped by the huge tree that
fell from a fiery storm. Waiting for their men to rescue them, Ulrich offered Georg a wine. Ulrich
von Gradwitz told Georg Znaeym that if Ulrich s men come faster than Georg s men then Ulrich
will tell the men to rescue Georgefirst, and that they have better things to do than getting the
better of a boundary dispute (Saki 86). The quote shows that Ulrich wanted to be friends with
Georg rather than fighting over who gets the forest land. Ulrich asked George to be his friend, and
George accepted his request. Waiting for their men to come and help them, both wished that their
private men would come first so they can be the first to show honorable attention to the other (Saki
87). The quote shows that both Ulrich and Georg wanted to prove that they are friends. Ulrich von

Analysis Of Wells Fargo And William Fargo
History
In the year eighteen fifty two, two men by the names of Henry Wells and William Fargo chose to
establish a monetary administrations organization that we particularly know today to be Wells
Fargo (Wells Fargo, 2017), which actually is quite significant. Before establishing the organization,
Mr. Wells and Mr. Fargo chose to ground their organization in five standards which generally
turned into their five very essential esteems. Their first standard being individuals as an aggressive
esteem which implies an association with a colleague will literally prompt a definitely superior
association with the clients, or so they particularly thought. Second morals Wells Fargoprides its

Augmented Reality ( Vr )
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are taking over our era, with new innovations
using the technology being released everyday. Both have had a sizable play in companies
performances, and have shaped and developed society from the beginning of their release. AR
and VR technology take aspects of the real world and apply it to technology in a three dimensional
form, just in different ways. Despite common misconceptions, these two ideas are not the same.
VR is all screen generated work, only including technological elements in its world that may
resemble real life items. AR, on the other hand, applies these elements to real life items, portraying
an image onto an object you physically have in front of you.
AR has had a specific impact on our society in general. From the Google Glass to the Hololens, it
s no surprise that companies like Google (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) are doing so well. But
what if we can use this technology for more? What if this technology could teach? What if it could
save lives? This is exactly what Volkswagen(VOW.DE on XETRA) has decided to explore.

Nike Wacc Case
NIKE INC. CASE 14
Philip Chen, Choco Huang, Ariel Chou, Matt Krieger
In this report we analyzed Cohen s approach in calculating WACC. After observing how Cohen
derived his figures we came up with our own WACC, terminal value, and EPS.
Cohen broke down his calculations into five parts 1) Single or Multiple Costs of Capital 2)
Proportion of capital from debt and equity 3) Cost of Debt 4) Cost of Equity 5) WACC
In part one; we disagreed with Cohen where he decided to value the company as a whole instead
of valuing each division separately. Since Nike is a multidivisional firm Cohen should of
aggregated the values of the individual divisions and calculate a different cost of capital for each
one. Since the exhibit 1 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The beta is the 0.69 YTD 06/30/2001 figure and our risk premium is the arithmetic mean. Both are
found in exhibit 4. We used the arithmetic mean because it is a better indicator of the average
returns in the past and 71% of financial analysts prefer arithmetic mean over geometric mean.
Geometric mean is not preferred because (PLEASE ADD WHY NOT HERE. I REMEBER BOB
DOING AN EXAMPLE IN CLASS WHERE GEOMETRIC MEAN IS A TRICK ON STUIPID
INVESTORS). Here is our calculation of CAPM.
CAPM=5.39%+0.69(7.50%). CAPM= 10.6%
In Part 5 we can summarize our calculations for WACC. Table 1.2 shows our WACC. | Portion|
Cost (K)| Contribution to WACC| Common Share| 30.57%| 10.60%| 3.24%| Debt| 69.43%| 9%|
6.25%| | | WACC| 9.49%|
Our WACC is higher than Cohen s because of the portions allocated to debt and equity, and the use
of market value to calculate cost of debt.
Since WACC has changed the terminal value will also change. The formula for terminal value=
year 10 FCF*(1+L T growth)/ (WACC L T growth). We used the L T growth in exhibit 4, which
is forecast of dividend growth at 5.50%. Therefore the new terminal value is 41,584. Since
terminal value has changed the discounted present value of future cash flow will also change. The
new discounted PV of FCF less debt is 21,224. The new EPS is $67.50 (21,224/271.5).

Introduction
In the past few decades there have been many developments in the live music events industry,
which have led to live music events growing to be global events. (Goldblatt, J., 2002) There are
several reasons for this development in the music events industry, many of them closely connected
to developments in other sectors that influence the business of live music events. In this essay we
will discuss the commercial, social, legal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Mintel, 2010) Also charity events have increased the global involvement in music events and
have attracted not only a wider variety of public but also political involvement. Because of this,
live music events have been able to attract a much bigger variety of public, which has enabled the
business to create global music events that are not focused on a particular segment of people but
attract people of all ages and social backgrounds. (Bennett, A., 2001)
Legal
As a result of commercial success and growth in the live music events business legal
involvement has over the years become necessary and this means involvement of an entire
business that has contributed to the growth of the music events industry in many ways.
According to D. Becker (2006) the growth in commercial value and the increase of complexity
of live music events have increased the need to record arrangements in writing and have made
the legal rights and obligations of the parties involved more complex. This has led to the legal
business becoming a big part of the live music business because especially with global music
events so many parties are involved and thus so many legal involvement has become necessary. In
this day and age where digitalization has influenced the music business so severely, new legislation
is introduced every year to update the copyright code (Bargfrede and Mak, 2009) and this has
directly and indirectly influenced the

E Learning Is A Hot Topic On Education
E learning is a hot topic in education. The use of devices and the internet changes what we see in
a classroom. No longer is a teacher standing in front of a room instructing and then giving a
worksheet as homework. Instead, we now have teachers assisting students to increase their
knowledge by using a device and the internet. This literature review defines the term E learning
and gives examples of what E learning may look like in an elementary classroom. It also
examines the advantages and disadvantages to using technology in an elementary classroom.
Finally, this literature review gives the role of the teacher in an evolving E learning classroom.
Research Questions of the Literature Review The literature review will address the following
questions: 1. What are the definitions and examples of E learning? 2. What are the advantages of
E learning? 3. What are the disadvantages of E learning? 4. What is the role of the teacher in E
learning? Literature Review What are the definitions and examples of E learning? E learning can be
defined in several ways. According to Oxford Dictionary, (n.d.) E learning is any learning that is
through electronic media using the internet. Webopedia (n.d.) states E learning is learning using
technology to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom. E learning is the

Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Essay
Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Almost everyone experiences a criminal career (Moffitt, 43).
The onset begins during adolescence and involves a series of petty crimes. The amount of crimes
committed during the criminal career at any given time is the rate at which the offender offends.
What differentiates the career criminal from the person who had a criminal career is this; Whereas
the latter by and large discontinues their crimes by the time they are in their mid 20s, those who are
career criminals will persist with their offending at a high rate during their life course (Moffitt, 41).
One theory put forth argues that the reason that people continue to commit crimes is that they have
neuropsychological defects (Moffitt,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These crimes, however, were still considered petty and are not highly atypical for an adolescent
boy. Despite these delinquent behaviors, Salvatore s fate as a career criminal had not yet been

acquiring adult social roles would not act as a means of desistence for Salvatore. The job would
give Salvatore a modest living; one that provided a steady income of seven dollars a week. It
was on a Friday on his way home from work that Salvatore s life course would take a turn for the
worse; Not by bad luck but by a stroke of good luck. Salvatore gambled his seven dollar weekly
wage and wound up winning $244 in a game of alley craps. In turn Salvatore adopted the
nickname Lucky and, instead of going to work the next day, Luciano would go to the alleys. A
far cry from shoplifting and gambling, Lucky s criminal career began to show a good deal of
escalation by his mid teens. When an oppurtunity arose and it meant fiscal gains Lucky would take
it. Up to this point all that had been available was petty crimes (e.g. theft and gambling), but drugs
provided him the opportunity of a higher standard of living. The change of environment led to a
dramatic shift in the crimes he would commit frequency at which he would commit them, and led to

The Trends And Trends Of The 1960s
Every year, designers present a fall collection. When examining the runway shows and styles
displayed as a whole, one starts to notice multiple trends. Although the designers give people the
trends, the consumer is the deciding factor of what is or is not a trend in everyday life and not
just in the fashion world. There are many different trends, which are categorized into major and
minor trends. Three major trends and forecasts seen numerous times in fall 2014 runway shows
and magazines are plaid, 60s inspired, and fairytale inspired styles. 1960 s Inspired Trend. The
1960s are back in fashion in a huge way. One can see the inspiration from the 60s all over the
runway and retail stores. When looking at forecasts for fall 2014, Trend Council predicted 60s
inspired clothing would be in style during the fall 2014 season. They predicted the styles seen
would be elegant shift dresses, hitting about mid thigh. The shift dresswas first introduced in the
early 60s and the style immediately became popular. To consumers in the 1960 s, the shift dress
represented youth, freedom and the revolutionary spirit of American young women. Now the shift
dress is classy again with a high neck, long sleeves and neutral colors.

It is that time of year again Advent! Flocking to the stores to buy gifts; shopping with massive

preparing our hearts for Him. If you really think about it, chalking Christmasup to gifts is one of the

Ethical Issue And The Ethical Dilemma
Leadership Ethics Introduction In this week s assignment, we have been asked to identify an
ethical issue presented in the Devise Products Unlimited (DPU) case study. First we will discuss
the issue and the ethical dilemma it creates. Next we will look at possible recommendations for
the DPU CEO to handle this issue. The Ethical Issue First, let s start by looking at what the
ethical issue that DPU is facing. The issue that I have chosen to focus on is issue two from the
case study: DPU outsources some of the manufacturing of parts to a Third World country. The
DPU CEO recently discovered that the organization to which he outsources has been forcing
laborers to work seven days a week and 10 hours a day. These laborers receive minimal wages,
yet without the work their families could starve and they would be homeless. The organization is
the only large employer in the area, and if the DPU CEO terminated his contract with the
organization, it would likely close, leaving hundreds of people without jobs. Before addressing the
factors that are involved in this issue lets discuss some of the background information surrounding
this issue. First what is outsourcing, outsourcing is the practice of hiring an outside firm or
individual to perform contracted work as an alternative to paying employees to do it (Kokemuller,
2007). Companies use outsourcing based on expertise and cost of labor advantages. The subject of
outsourcing in its self can often time be a much

Gender And Socialization Paper
Socialization regarding gender impacts the way an individual: ranks themselves in society in
comparison to other genders, lives their gender identity within society, and self identifies as a
gendered being. The intended goal of socialization is to prepare the individual for their role in
several institutions, but roles are different depending on gender. The patriarchal American society
holds many dated misconceptions about gender roles that result in differences in the socialization
of men and women. Men are socialized to lead and excel in institutions, while women are
socialized to play supporting roles. This has shown to be particularly true in the institutions of
family and the workforce, in which men are socialized to be bread winners and... Show more

The first societal lens that influences the socialization process is androcentrism. Androcentrism,
also known as male centeredness, is referred to by Aulette and Wittner (2015) as the commonly held
perception that everything considered male exhibits the societal norm or standard. As a result,
everything female is considered to be abnormal or different. Through the lens of androcentrism the
purpose of socialization for individuals is to accept that men rank higher than women in social
hierarchy.
Individuals are socialized to believe men are superior to women through the continual representation
of hegemonic masculinities and emphasized femininities in popular culture and society. We
continually see the tough and powerful man portrayed as the epitome of masculinity, while the
subordinate, organized, refined woman represents the epitome of femininity. This representation of
gender teaches men that they are encouraged to seek roles of power and status, while teaching
women to fulfill lesser, subordinate

Like consumers, farmers do not have much choice either. Farmers plant crops that are
demanded by the global food market. Essentially, farms are no longer owned by farmers and the
farmers become the laborers. Also, it sometimes is all or nothing for farmers. For one, some
land can only be used for one crop, for example coffee, and if something goes wrong with the
crop, farmers lose everything. Second, unskilled labor jobs are dwindling, so there might not be
much else a farmer could do if something were to happen to their land. It seems that when crops
do well, farmers should be making a lot of money, however, the food processors and distributors
are the ones who make most of the profit. Because of this, farmers are left with pennies compared
to what the others make. Farmers and consumers have fought to control the food system, but what
other choice do they have than to support it? The second section to be reviewed is chapter two.
This chapter was devastating because it talked about the poverty that farmers face and the suicides
that result because of it. Farmers cannot bare to see their families struggle or lose their farm that
has been in the family for generations and, frequently, they use highly toxic pesticides used on their
farms to commit suicide. Not only do these happen in poor developing countries, but also in
wealthy, developed countries such as Australia and the United States. After a farmer passes, the

The Effects Of Gambling Addiction On The Age
Research Question
How can the amounts gambled by young adults be reduced, and what is the path to overcoming
instances of gambling addiction affecting this age group?
Background
Pathological gambling, also known as Ludomania, is an addiction and is clinically referred to as
a disorder that can affect people of all ages. Young people between the ages of 18 24 spend more
money to gamble than any other age group. This has become a growing problem over the years as
our technology has advanced, causing many young people to have little or no money by the age of
30. Many adult pathologic gamblers report having developed gambling problems during their
teenage years. (Delfabbro, P, Gambling Research Australia, A review of Australian Gambling
Research, August 2008) Although the common perception is that it is just irresponsible and bad
behavior, it is actually much more complex than that. Pathological gambling is an addiction rooted
in the brain, just like a drug or alcohol addiction. As this generation has been brought up with the
new and upcoming technology, many young people have started some form of gambling. Whether
it is betting on a sports game, online shopping or even buying a scratchy ticket, they have gambled
money away. This leads us to the biggest question. How can we minimize this?
Intervention aims
Like an alcohol or drug addiction, pathological gambling is a long term disorder that tends to get
worse without treatment. Even with treatment, it can be quite common to

Balbir Singh Sodhi was fatally shot on September 15, 2001 in Mesa, Arizona. Like others, Sodhi,
a Sikh, was mistaken for a Muslim. According to a FBI report, hate crime incidents targeting
people and institutions that identified with the Islamic faith increased from 28 in 2000 to 481 in

was hit with a firebomb.
A sign that tempers and fear haven t cooled over the years was the recent battle over what has

Blood Pressure, The Pressure Of Blood
Blood pressure, the pressure of blood in the circulatory system, is a vital aspect to the human body
in order to maintain homeostasis. Many Americans are not aware of the seriousness of having high
blood pressure. High blood pressure is called Hypertension, which can be a silent killer if untreated.
There are many causes of Hypertension, including diet, age and race. Doctors now are making
classifications of pre hypertensive, which can help patients maintain their health and possibly avoid
hypertension, if they follow the advice of their physician. Americans should eliminate fatty foods
from their diet, be mindful of their age and race as they may become prone to Hypertension, which
can lead to heart damage, heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke and maybe death if
untreated.
It is important to know what to do if one s blood pressure approaches the extremes, as it can be a
sign of a serious health problem. Knowing what the norm is for systolic and diastolic pressure
can help eliminate health dangers. An unusual blood pressure reading by itself, may not
necessarily demand a 911 call (Thomas, George M.D, 2015). While the unusual blood pressure
reading may not be a 911 emergency at that moment, it can still be a sign of trouble arising. It is
important for to realize the seriousness of rises in blood pressure. Hypertension can be prevented
with regular checking and monitoring of the blood pressure. If blood pressure reaches 140/90 or

years, being used as clothes hangers, etc., the new versions are sleek, silent, and easy to use.
There are two basic types of bikes, the upright and the recumbent. An upright is what most people
think of when they think of fitness bikes. The upright is closest to a regular bike, narrow saddle,
pedals below the rider, handle bars out front. On the other hand, a recumbent exercise bike has a
wider seat with a small back support. The pedals are out front, and the rider is in a reclined
position. Both bikes have good and bad points as we shall see.
The traditional setup of an upright bike allows the rider to more closely simulate an actual bike
ride than possible with a recumbent. The rider is able to stand, assume a race crouch, or a
neutral position. Trouble is, if the rider has any sort of back problems, especially lower back, an
upright can irritate the condition leading to worse problems. An upright is more difficult to get
on and off of because of a higher proximity to the ground. This can be problematic for older or
overweight people. An upright takes up less room than a recumbent. You may want to keep this in
mind if your exercise area is on the small side. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I Am On The Clock Right Now
As I neared Bryant Street, I shifted the box with car parts. I had to get them to that guy up the
block as quickly as I could. There wouldn t be anything to smile about if I got fired for being too
slow. Music was blaring from a radio perched on top a phone booth down the block, where a
group of men leaned against cars in front of the barbershop. I rushed past them, trying to balance
the car parts in the box with one hand while rubbing my other hand; trying some of the sticky
grease off of it. I spotted Sam and Maxie and crossed toward them. Hey, Sam. Maxie. Hey,
Bucky, she replied, You finally got a free afternoon? Hardly. No, girl, I m on the clock right now.
Just dropping off some parts to a guy up the block. I pointed my thumb over my shoulder. I
suddenly remembered that I had to talk to Stick about that. I m glad I ran into you, Sam. Do you
a favor, will ya? Tell Steve to stop by the shop tomorrow. We gotta talk. I sped up my speaking, It
s real important. I tried to catch him earlier, but I missed my shot. Yeah, no problem, Bucky. I ll
tell him. I grinned, relieved. Thanks man, I gotta go. Get back to work fore they dock me. I
slapped his shoulder. Catch ya later. I jogged off down the sidewalk and then slowed to wave at
some friends coming out of the mini grocery carrying bottles of soda. One of them called out and I
turned partway, still jogging. You coming tonight, man? Can t. Working, I called back. I waved and
dashed toward the corner.

Dyadic and Mass Communication: Relational Messages in Avatar
Communication beliefs and practices evolve as relationships develop. In the film, Avatar, produced
and directed by Cameron (2009), humans have already consumed the earth s resources, creating an
energy crisis in 2154. As a result, the Resources Development Administration (RDA for short)
seeks to mine a valuable mineral, unobtanium, in Pandora, a densely forested planet whose
atmosphere is poisonous to humans, and is inhabited by the blue skinned, sapient humanoids, Na
vi, who worship the mother goddess, Eywa, and live in harmony with nature. Jake Sully, a
paraplegic Marin, accepts the offer of replacing his identical brother, as one of the operators of Dr.
Grace Augustine, head of the AvatarProgram. Colonel Miles Quaritch, head of the RDA s security
force, promises Jake that if he can walk again if he can collect intelligence information about the Na
vi and the giant tree, Hometree, which stands on the richest deposit of unobtanium. However, as
Jake interacts with the Na vi, he acculturates and falls in love with
Neytiri. Avatar The film shows three interpersonal concepts, dyadic communication, mass
communication, and relational messages.

Lisa Simpson Satire
As a child, I owe credit to Lisa Simpson for setting me on the path to social justice, activism,
veganism and Jazz.Foremost, she was my gateway drug to feminist rebellion. Lisa came before
the guerrilla Girls, Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis and Naomi Wolf. Why do we overlook this
trailblazer and feminist thinker? The beloved heroine is actively fighting many injustices for
girls during her 20 year existence, outstandingly in one of my favorite Simpsons episodes, Lisa vs.
Malibu Stacey . The episode follows eight year old Lisa as she is gifted a talking version of her
favorite Barbie inspired doll, Malibu Stacey. Like every girlin Springfield, she is initially overjoyed
to receive the gift, unlike other girls she becomes gravely disappointed to discover Stacey s
aspirations only amount to boys, cheerleading, and shopping. Embarking on an existential journey,
Lisa questions herself and her community about their relationship to the doll and the world.
Courageously, she storms the mansion of the doll s inventor to discuss her grave disappointment
with the message Malibu Stacy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I was on the hunt for the perfect gift for an 8 year old s birthday, I discovered the doll market
is quite different than my coming of age. Undoubtedly, Barbie is still problematic, but now she
has competitors, including Bratz, and Monster High dolls, who are noticeably thinner than
barbie and dressed up to look like grown women getting ready for a night of clubbing than a
game of tennis. As I pick up the first doll box, I find a doll chained up in a slither of clothing
with a blank expression on her face, a prominent thigh gap, with the tagline GREAT for girls
ages 5 and up! By all means, I never imagined in my life that I would miss Barbie. For that
reason, I begin to sit myself down in the toy aisle to start googling everything I could about these

The Various Forms of the Cosmological Argument for the Existence of God
The cosmological argument is a well established argument for the existence of God and it is also
known as the first cause argument.
The cosmological argument is based upon the belief that there is a first cause behind the existence
of universe and this was God. It has taken many forms and in the past has been presented in many
ways. So many philosophers have put their points across, philosophers like; Plato, Aquinas,
Socrates, Hume, Kant and many more.
The first person to put their point across was Plato. He argued that the power to produce the
movements plausibly comes before the power to receive it and pass it on. In ... Show more content

Both Aquinas and Craig deny the infinite and yet argue that God is infinite. Believers of the
argument point out that God is unique and that the laws of nature do not apply to God.
In the five ways Anthony Kenny said that Aquinas s principle that nothing moves itself goes
against the fact that people and animals move themselves. He stated that Newton s first law of
motion, in which movement can be explained by a body s own sluggishness from previous
motion, disapproves Aquinas s argument. It is possible for object to have uniform motion as well
as to be in a state of rest.
b)
The strengths of the Cosmological Argument lie in both its simplicity and easily comprehensible
concept that there cannot be an infinite number of causes to an event. Some arguments for God s
existence require more thought and training in terms and concepts, but this argument is basic and
simple. Also, it is perfectly logical to assert that objects do not bring themselves into existence and
must, therefore, have causes.
For must not the cause of existing things exist? We find ourselves faced with the possibility of
an infinite regress. If it is true of A that it is caused to exist by B, why may not B be caused to exist
by C, D, E...and so on ad infinitum? If there actually is a cause of

Canada and the United States. However, during this time he saw a need for something that would

which includes marginalization isolation and discrimination by the state, community and families

This led to the global economic downfall of the country since it scared away various potential

group further threaten the country s growth and development since it was against the country s
government structural organization and foreign labor as well as policies. The tension posed by the
group further fostered the unequal distribution of goods and services to various parts of the

The ocean full of life and undiscovered wonders is changing from a diverse biom(define)e to a

on shores. Through the window provided by the diverse biome of coral reefs we can see how the
ocean reacts to the changes being sustained(change). Humans play a major part in the growth of the

Essay on Conformity and Political Control
The political system in the United States of America is ruled by a two party system that is currently
fighting for control of the economy and government. In the last century the country has been
involved in several conflicts including two world wars and the cold war, which permanently
instilled fear and terror in the American psyche. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the
economy was brought to the edge of failure leaving a bi partisan political system with the attitude
that there is either a democratic or republican solution to the many problems Americans face as a
nation. Due to the fact that there is so much at stake, both political parties have resorted to tactics
that prey on the fact that human beings usually conform to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is a generalization of the effect, but this geo political representation can also be shown on a
smaller or larger scale. Residents of small towns usually affiliate with the same political party and
the majority residents of a larger region will usually affiliate with the same party. This is where the
idea of the conservative south or liberal north comes from. The fact that people automatically
conform to those around them has negative repercussions in more than one political arena. The idea
that people conform to political affiliations regionally affects the way the House of Representative
re draws their district lines. This happens so frequently on the state and federal level that that
practice has actually been termed gerrymandering. Unfortunately the practice of gerrymandering
practically undermines the political process in America emphasizing the importance of which party
has the majority in The House of Representatives and taking focus away from their socio
economical principles. The lawmakers of this country utilize the fact that people will automatically
conform to others around them to their advantage creating a political system that is not truly
democratic.
Politicians of both parties also take advantage of the fact that people are likely to conform due to
normative influences. Normative influences lead people to conform due to the fear or backlash of
others (Kassin, 2011, p.258).

The Kings Way of Goverment
Feudalism was based on the exchange of land for military service. It had levels of status similar to
modern society. In the Middle Ages, the Feudal System was a very important system to kings in
order for them to control entire countries.
The Feudal System was a vital system to William I who could not control all the land he had.
According to Chris Trueman, William had defeated the English army lead by Harold Godwine
but before he could be called King of England he had to gain control of all of England. The
English thought of William as a foreigner who had forced his way into London. Since people didn
t like him he had to use force to maintain his control on England. It was extremely difficult for
William to rule every part of the country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These manors were isolated, with occasional visits from peddlers, pilgrims on their way to the
Crusades, or soldiers from other fiefdoms. Family life was governed by the place one held in
society. The nobles had the highest stats and possessed the most wealth and land. The clergy could
be rich or poor, depending on their title and how much influence they had over the people. The serfs
had the lowest stats and possessed the least amount of wealth and land (Characteristics).
Life in the Middle Ages was hard, especially for serfs, and few people could read or write. During
the years of the Roman Empire, the soldiers of the emperor protected the poor people. Then when
the empire fell, there were no laws protecting them, so they turned to the lords to keep the peace
and to act on their behalf. This willingness of the poor people to be ruled by the lords led to the
beginning of Feudalism. Some peasants, poor people, were free, but most became serfs, slaves, to
the lord. Serfs generally lived in communities that were ruled by the local nobles. They could not
marry or even leave the manor without the lord s permission. Serfs did all the work on the manor
farm and all serfs worked: men, women, and children. They worked in the fields, cared for animals,
built and cared for buildings, made clothing, and everything else that required manual labor. There
were also servants who worked in the manor doing the cooking, cleaning, laundering, and other
household jobs. Serfs

Appreciate Your Heritage Some Americans remember where they came from; others don t.
That s the case in Daniel Chacon s story The Biggest City in the World . It is a story about
Harvey Gomez who is a Mexican American young man whose grandparents migrated to the
Unites States from Mexico. Harvey has only been to Mexico once in his entire life and neither of
his parents has ever been there before. Therefore he doesn t know anything about his native
culture or language. In this story Harvey travels deep inside of Mexico for the first time with his
Mexican history Professor David P. Rogstart and gets exposed to its culture and language. On the

The poem Finding Home written by Carolina Hospital tells the story of how Mexicans who come
to America try to find their heritage in the United States. Like many who migrate to America, the
immigrants miss their country and are concerned about losing their culture. In contrast to Harvey
Gomez, this poem shows that many Mexicans in America appreciate their heritage. I have
travelled north again,/to these gray skies/and empty doorways, (Hospital 101). This shows that
they miss their native country and are concerned about forgetting their heritage. Perhaps Harvey
s grandparents thought the same thing when they first came to America from Mexico.
Regardless of their arrival in America, they want to return to Mexico someday. I must travel
again soon (Hospital 102). Despite leaving their native land they have respect for Mexico and
will visit again. After the experience that Harvey had in discovering his heritage, I am sure that
he will visit Mexico again. Daniel Chacon is clearly making a statement that Mexican immigrants
whose kids are born and raised in America forget their own culture. In the story Harvey Gomez is
denying his heritage and was embarrassed at times to admit that he is Mexican. This is because he
barely knows anything about Mexico and doesn t even speak the language. Eventually Harvey
accepts who he is and discovers his heritage throughout the story. I believe that Chacon wants to

  • 2. Essay about The Rocking Horse vs Lottery Professor ENGL 102 B54 LUO 3 February 2014 The Lottery vs. The Rocking Horse Winner In The Rocking Horse Winner, by D. H. Lawrence, and The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, the two authors illustrate symbols and themes throughout their stories in which one common idea is present: perhaps winning is not always positive. The Rocking Horse Winner, by D.H. Lawrence is a fictional story about a woman s obsession for money and the lack of love and affection she shows to her family. Her son Paul hopes to change his mother s mind set in order to gain her love by becoming lucky. Paul discovers a way to become lucky from a rocking horse that he receives as a Christmas present. He perceives that this horse has magical powers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hester tells Paul that luck is what causes you to have money. If you re lucky you have money. That s why it s better to be born lucky than rich. If you re rich you may lose money. But if you re lucky, you will always have money. (236) This pushes Paul to desperately seek out luck so that his mother will be grateful for her life and provide her family with the love and affection that they so rightfully deserve. Paul believes his rocking horse is full of magical powers, which will help him achieve the luck he needs to gain his mother s love. While Paul rides his rocking horse, the horse predicts the winning horse and ends up making Paul an appalling amount of money. Paul gives his winnings to his mother who squanders it on unnecessary materialistic things. He realizes that he must win more money to win his mother s affections. He becomes mad and frantically searches for the next winner of the horse races. On Paul s last ride to find the last winner of the horse race, he falls of the horse and eventually dies. Lawrence shows many points by applying these obvious symbols: the rocking horse and the whispering house. The wooden rocking horse symbolizes the fantasy quest that Paul takes to attain luck. This magical mysterious wooden horse also tells Paul who will win the horse races. The whispering house symbolizes his mother s lust for money. The house constantly haunts Paul and his siblings with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Argumentative Essay About Gay Adoption Corri Fairfull Discursive Essay Gay Adoption Gay adoption is a subject which is widely debated. However over recent years gay adoption has allowed for most gay couples who want to adopt young children and give them a good quality of life, which they would have if they lived with their biological parents or a heterosexual couple, to do so. One positive view of gay adoption is that it gives the gay couple the chance to start their own family and give a child in care a new start to life in a loving home. This will allow the couple to love and care for the child just as much as they would if the child was living with their own biological parents. Gay couples who want to adopt a child will give the same loving family home just like a heterosexual couple or single parent would. For some children, living with a gay couple may be something they haven t experienced before. However finding a family who love the child and appreciate them for who they are, also encouraging them with all aspects of their life and supporting them all the way through their life is what matters most to children. Another positive view about gay adoption is that it means a child in care will receive the opportunity to get the benefit of new parents who are going to give them the best possible life with parents who are healthy, in a stable relationship and have a good financial support system in place. Since there are many children up for adoption, gay couples often adopt children who are older as babies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Decision Between Quantitative And Qualitative Data One of the most important parts of establishing a research design involves the decision between quantitative and qualitative data. Each has its own strength and weaknesses that any successful research design must account for. Perhaps one of the easiest distinctions between the two rests in the sample size. While quantitative data normally involves a large n, or sample size, qualitative data involves a much smaller sample size in comparison. This smaller sample size allows qualitative researchers to focus more on each case, increasing the internal validity of the research, but limiting its external validity. Quantitative based research designs reverse this. The large sample size of quantitative data often makes it difficult for researches to establish causation among the independent and dependent variable(s). The external validly of such designs usually offsets this issue to some extent. Due to their large nature, and use of numerical data, quantitative research is much more replicable when compared to their qualitative counterparts. Unfortunately, the struggle between internal and external validity is a fundamental part of research. Even efforts to combine the two methods to form a mixed methods research design ultimately fail to nullify the issue completely. Keeping this in mind, a quantitative analysis is the most logical given the specific research question and the data available. This chapter seeks to prove that there is a statistically significant difference in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Understanding The Terminology Of The Lgbt Community Definition Understanding the terminology of the LGBT community is often complicated. LGBT, which was once known as the gay community, is an acronym that describes different gender expression or identities. The acronym was created to be more inclusive and have more diverse groups. It allowed individuals of the LGBTcommunity to fully express themselves in different ways. The first word of the acronym is lesbian. The word lesbian is defined as an individual who identifies as a women and who are physically and emotionally attracted to other women (Huegel, 2011). People who identify themselves as lesbian may also choose an alternative word to identify themselves as, gay. The term gay is often used to describe both homosexual men and women however in reference to men, gay describes men who are physically and emotionally attracted to other men (Huegel, 2011). Men more often use the term gay when identifying themselves than women. According to Huegel (2011), bisexual is defined as people who are emotionally and physically attracted to people of either sex (p.9). When an individual identifies as bisexual it can often cause complications within and outside of the LGBT community. They are often told, they are confused about who they are, or they just cannot make up their minds, however bisexuality has been scientifically proven as a valid identity (Huegel, 2011). • 11. Compare Gilgamesh And Oedipus To a naked eye, comparing the two epics of Gilgamesh and Oedipus may seems to be a difficult task. Especially considering they re derived from separate civilizations. At a glance it may seem like the only thing these two have in common with one another is the fact they were kings. However, when you take a closer look at these characters you notice something about the two; they re are both suffering servants. Oedipusand Gilgamesh qualify as suffering servants due to the emotional turmoil brought upon them by the gods for the purpose of mending their communities. The Epic of Gilgameshstarts off very promising. We re introduced to the handsome, strong and wise ruler of Uruk, Gilgamesh. He was godlike. Literally, he was composed of one third man and two thirds god. However, he rules over his kingdom with an iron fist; raping women and oppressing his subjects. From his own perspective he was living the life it didn t matter it came to the expense of others. At least that was what he thought at the time. It all changed when he came in contact with his friend, Enkidu. The God s heard the suffering of Gilgamesh s people, so in return they create Enkidu to balance out Gilgamesh s character. Once the two come in contact, they were irrespirable. Gilgamesh had a companion and formed an unspeakable friendship the wild man, but when Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh loses his only true friend, his whole world falls apart. He is stricken with grief. • 12. The Effect Of Neural Reflexes On The Gastrointestinal... ows neural reflexes to occur solely in the gastrointestinal tract, independent of the brain and spinal cord (Widmaier et al. 2014). Within the tubular gastrointestinal tract, the ENS is formed by various interconnected networks, called plexuses, of enteric neurons, glial cells, and axons (Widmaier et al. 2014). The majority of these nerve cells are found within two different arrangements of ganglia (Fig. 1): the myenteric (Auerbach s) plexus and the submucosal (Meissner s) plexus (Furness 2006; Guyton and Hall 2006). The nerve cells axons either synapse with additional neurons in the plexus or innervate the smooth muscle of digestive organs (Furness 2006). Neural activity in one plexus can affect activity in the other since some axons in one plexus synapse with neurons in the other (Fig. 1) (Widmaier et al. 2014). Extrinsic nerve fibers from the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems can also synapse with neurons in each of the two plexuses (Fig. 1) (Guyton and Hall 2006). Though the ENS can function without these nerve pathways, the subsystems of the ANS can influence gastrointestinal activity (Guyton and Hall 2006; Widmaier et al. 2014). An example would include either inhibiting or enhancing the GI tract s motility and secretory activity through the sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers (Widmaier et al. 2014). The myenteric and submucosal plexuses each have different physiological functions. The myenteric plexus spans the length of the intestinal wall and consists of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Analysis Of Anna Deavere Smith s Fires In The Mirror My sense is that American character lives not in one place or the other, but in the gaps between the places, and in our struggle to be together in our differences, (Anna Deavere Smith). Anna Deavere Smith in her play, Fires in the Mirror, takes two different cultural communities and interviews their standpoint of the conflict at hand. The underlying racism present in this community is soon brewed into a pandemonium once the death of both a Black and Jewish individual take place. Fires in the Mirror is a social drama that presents a breach as several Jewish males accidentally kill a young Black boy in a car accident. Due to this incident, it causes a crisis within the community as a Jewish man is later murdered by Black males to pursue revenge for the cause of this breach. With a social drama following the guideline to find a redressive action to limit the spread of the breach, Smith in her interviews portrays that this community fails to do so. Because of this, the reintegration becomes an irreparable breach between the two. Consequently, due to the social clash between the Black and Jewish communities, the city of Crown Heights becomes socially segregated. Individuals interviewed in this play are heavily indulged in looking at what segregates them from one another that it leads to individuals pointing fault or playing victim, which inevitably will never lead to a resolution to this social crisis. Individuals that have been interviewed have focused their energy on what segregates themselves from one another that it restrains them from foreseeing a solution to the social crisis among their community. A major conflict brought up throughout multiple interviews was the scene where the accident happened. Multiple interviews have their own perspective of the situation as well as their opinion about the different ambulances that arrives in the scene.Rabbi Joseph Speilman in No Blood in His Feet explains, The Jewish community has a volunteer ambulance corps which is funded totally from the nations...The EMS responded with three ambulances on the scene. They were there before the Jewish ambulance came (69). This explain shows how in a city where the citizens are under one government, when a tragic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Compare The Ostler and The Darkness Out There Compare The Ostler and The Darkness Out There In this essay I will compare two stories The Ostler, written in the 19th century by a man called Wilkie Coliins, and The Darkness Out There, by Penelope Lively, written in the 20th century. They are both horror stories, a genre which has been popular throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This is perhaps because, since we are no longer scared on a daily basis, as would have been the case in medieval times, we need to find an artificial way of creating the thrill. I will look at the similarities and differences between the way each story is structured, the build up of tension, the settings and the characters. First I will summarise each story and look at their 19th and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stories were written in different centuries. The Ostler was written in the 19th century and The Darkness Out There was written in the 20th century. There are many differences between them which make this obvious. The most obvious of these differences is that an ostler is a profession that does not exist today. They worked at inns, looking after the horses of travellers who were staying the night. In The Ostler, when the main character, Isaac, discovers that his fiancГѓ e is the woman who tried to murder him in his dream, he feels that he has to keep his word and marry her anyway, which probably would not happen today, because people s ideas of what is right and wrong have changed, and most people do not have such a strong sense of duty. Although the character of a manipulative woman still appears in many stories, some aspects of Rebecca s background would not appear in a 20th century story. She is obviously from an upper class family but has somehow fallen . It is not clear how she came to be is the state she was when Isaac first met her, but some of the most common ways were to get pregnant outside of marriage, or have an affair with a married man. It is also possible that she has treated other men in the same way she treats Isaac, and that this has somehow contributed to her downfall. The language that is used in The Ostler also makes it clear that this is a 19th century story. Long words, such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Virginia Woolf s Theory Of Criticism, Poststructuralism... Virginia Woolf seemed to think that something changed forever in society and in all of us after the Great War. She claims nothing had changed; nothing was different. [...]Before the war, people would have said the same things, but they would have sounded different (Woolf, 1929). She couldn t be more right: most of the concepts that had hold the western world together for centuries were drastically altered during the 20th Century, and Literature, as a reflection of the deepest fears and desires of our human heart, changed with it. Around the year 1915, with Einstein s theory of relativity, the ideas of time and space were subjectivized. Postructuralism claims that the person is not an independent entity, introducing the notion of the dissolved or constructed subject; that is, that an individual doesn t make him/herself: their Identity is shaped by social and linguistic intertwined forces. Derrida argues that by deconstructing our intellectual universe we obtain a universe with no absolutes, a decentered or relativistic Universe. From this moment, since the new Relativistic Society cannot define us, Identity becomes an inner process of negotiation where each individual develops their own image of themselves. Decaux supports this idea with his conception of Identity as one s definition of the self. On the other hand, HarrГ© (Yardley Honess, 1987) defends the idea of the self as a mode of personal organization constructed through the grammatical properties of language, mode that is however not subjective or belonging to an individual order but to a social or moral order. As I previously mentioned the car was developed and introduced to the market only 25 months after they launched the project, the average time it takes is 43 months, Ford Corporation decided to take a shortcut to save time, and did not test the rear end of the car. Even though the engineers at Ford knew the problem with the gas tank, and that it cannot withstand a hit of 20mph they still released the car. Investing more time would allow them to come up with a solution or find a different material that would prevent gas tanks from exploding, bursting in the flames, and causing so many injuries. The DPU CEO recently discovered that the organization to which he outsources has been forcing laborers to work seven days a week and 10 hours a day. These laborers receive minimal wages, yet without the work their families could starve and they would be homeless. The organization is the only large employer in the area, and if the DPU CEO terminated his contract with the organization, it would likely close, leaving hundreds of people without jobs. Before addressing the factors that are involved in this issue lets discuss some of the background information surrounding this issue. First what is outsourcing, outsourcing is the practice of hiring an outside firm or individual to perform contracted work as an alternative to paying employees to do it (Kokemuller, 2007). Companies use outsourcing based on expertise and cost of labor advantages. The subject of outsourcing in its self can often time be a much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gender And Socialization Paper Socialization regarding gender impacts the way an individual: ranks themselves in society in comparison to other genders, lives their gender identity within society, and self identifies as a gendered being. The intended goal of socialization is to prepare the individual for their role in several institutions, but roles are different depending on gender. The patriarchal American society holds many dated misconceptions about gender roles that result in differences in the socialization of men and women. Men are socialized to lead and excel in institutions, while women are socialized to play supporting roles. This has shown to be particularly true in the institutions of family and the workforce, in which men are socialized to be bread winners and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first societal lens that influences the socialization process is androcentrism. Androcentrism, also known as male centeredness, is referred to by Aulette and Wittner (2015) as the commonly held perception that everything considered male exhibits the societal norm or standard. As a result, everything female is considered to be abnormal or different. Through the lens of androcentrism the purpose of socialization for individuals is to accept that men rank higher than women in social hierarchy. Individuals are socialized to believe men are superior to women through the continual representation of hegemonic masculinities and emphasized femininities in popular culture and society. We continually see the tough and powerful man portrayed as the epitome of masculinity, while the subordinate, organized, refined woman represents the epitome of femininity. This representation of gender teaches men that they are encouraged to seek roles of power and status, while teaching women to fulfill lesser, subordinate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of Stuffed And Starved By Raj Patel Reading Summary/Discussion Questions #4 This week we started reading a new book called Stuffed Starved by Raj Patel and were to read the first three chapters. Patel is different in his writing compared to Pollan because he is more emotional and forceful in his statements. He has worked for the World Bank, WTO, and the UN, so his social position makes him someone others would want to listen to. Unlike Pollan, Patel goes outside of the United Statesand takes a global perspective in his writing. Essentially, farms are no longer owned by farmers and the farmers become the laborers. Also, it sometimes is all or nothing for farmers. For one, some land can only be used for one crop, for example coffee, and if something goes wrong with the crop, farmers lose everything. Second, unskilled labor jobs are dwindling, so there might not be much else a farmer could do if something were to happen to their land. It seems that when crops do well, farmers should be making a lot of money, however, the food processors and distributors are the ones who make most of the profit. Because of this, farmers are left with pennies compared to what the others make. Farmers and consumers have fought to control the food system, but what other choice do they have than to support it? The second section to be reviewed is chapter two. This chapter was devastating because it talked about the poverty that farmers face and the suicides that result because of it. Farmers cannot bare to see their families struggle or lose their farm that has been in the family for generations and, frequently, they use highly toxic pesticides used on their farms to commit suicide. Not only do these happen in poor developing countries, but also in wealthy, developed countries such as Australia and the United States. After a farmer passes, the family is ... • 38. The Effects Of Gambling Addiction On The Age Research Question How can the amounts gambled by young adults be reduced, and what is the path to overcoming instances of gambling addiction affecting this age group? Background Pathological gambling, also known as Ludomania, is an addiction and is clinically referred to as a disorder that can affect people of all ages. Young people between the ages of 18 24 spend more money to gamble than any other age group. This has become a growing problem over the years as our technology has advanced, causing many young people to have little or no money by the age of 30. Many adult pathologic gamblers report having developed gambling problems during their teenage years. (Delfabbro, P, Gambling Research Australia, A review of Australian Gambling Research, August 2008) Although the common perception is that it is just irresponsible and bad behavior, it is actually much more complex than that. Pathological gambling is an addiction rooted in the brain, just like a drug or alcohol addiction. As this generation has been brought up with the new and upcoming technology, many young people have started some form of gambling. Whether it is betting on a sports game, online shopping or even buying a scratchy ticket, they have gambled money away. This leads us to the biggest question. How can we minimize this? Intervention aims Like an alcohol or drug addiction, pathological gambling is a long term disorder that tends to get worse without treatment. Even with treatment, it can be quite common to ... Many Americans are not aware of the seriousness of having high blood pressure. High blood pressure is called Hypertension, which can be a silent killer if untreated. There are many causes of Hypertension, including diet, age and race. Doctors now are making classifications of pre hypertensive, which can help patients maintain their health and possibly avoid hypertension, if they follow the advice of their physician. Americans should eliminate fatty foods from their diet, be mindful of their age and race as they may become prone to Hypertension, which can lead to heart damage, heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke and maybe death if untreated. It is important to know what to do if one s blood pressure approaches the extremes, as it can be a sign of a serious health problem. Knowing what the norm is for systolic and diastolic pressure can help eliminate health dangers. An unusual blood pressure reading by itself, may not necessarily demand a 911 call (Thomas, George M.D, 2015). Although exercise bikes (fitness bikes, studio bikes) received a bad rap for a number of years, being used as clothes hangers, etc., the new versions are sleek, silent, and easy to use. There are two basic types of bikes, the upright and the recumbent. An upright is what most people think of when they think of fitness bikes. The upright is closest to a regular bike, narrow saddle, pedals below the rider, handle bars out front. On the other hand, a recumbent exercise bike has a wider seat with a small back support. The pedals are out front, and the rider is in a reclined position. Both bikes have good and bad points as we shall see. The traditional setup of an upright bike allows the rider to more closely simulate an actual bike ride than possible with a recumbent. The rider is able to stand, assume a race crouch, or a neutral position. Trouble is, if the rider has any sort of back problems, especially lower back, an upright can irritate the condition leading to worse problems. An upright is more difficult to get on and off of because of a higher proximity to the ground. This can be problematic for older or overweight people. An upright takes up less room than a recumbent.
