WHY DO WE LISTEN
⢠Podcast listeners also revealed they prefer original content rather than catch-
up radio podcasts, with the majority (76%) of episodes listened to in the past
month being original podcasts
⢠Podcast listeners continue to be driven by audio that entertains, teaches or
informs them
⢠Comedy podcasts appeal more to a younger audience (14 â 34) while Society
and Culture and Health and Lifestyle appeal more to an older audience (55+)
⢠Word of mouth is the number 1 means of discovering new podcasts. But
when choosing between options, listeners are most motivated to try new
podcasts from the Episode Descriptions (including Headline, 71%) and
Recommendations (70%)
⢠âAt Homeâ remains the most common location for podcast listening (76%),
although a large proportion of podcast listeners aged between 14 â 34 are
listening to podcasts while they are out and about.

RECORDING TECHNOLOGY
⢠In built microphones in devices and phonesâ generally poorer quality
⢠USB Microphones â generally better
⢠Make sure to get realtime monitoring
⢠XLR Microphones â need interface or mixer
⢠Mixer â Rodecaster Pro â Podcast standard
⢠Bees Knees â wireless lapel microphones â e.g. Rode Wireless Go
⢠Alive 90.5 FM

ROOM AND ENVIRONMENT
Factors to consider for your recording environment
⢠Room acoustics â smaller the better
⢠Room noise â internal and external
⢠Room clutter â things you or your guest might âbumpâ
⢠Will you be using video? Whatâs in the background?
⢠Always TEST your environment.
⢠Always LISTEN in your headphones.
⢠Note on recording processing â unless broadcasting Live, TURN OFF!
⢠Always make sure to record some âSILENCEâ.

REMOTE RECORDING
⢠Zoom â Inbuilt Recording
⢠Skype â usually poor quality, hard to record locally
⢠Cleanfeed.net
⢠Choice of Alive 90.5 FM for ease of use, both remote guests and Outside
Broadcasts
⢠Multiple remote guests
⢠Can record with Free version or use other local recording.
⢠Audio only.
⢠Other options, see PODCAST ONLINE SERVICES (next slide)
⢠Some offer both remote and local recordings
⢠Local recordings useful if poor connection between host and guests
⢠Cloud recordings often mutitrack which are different than a mono/stereo
audio file.
⢠TEST, TEST, TEST â Everyone to use headphones!
⢠Use general banter with your guests while you listen and ask for anyone to
adjust

QUALITY AUDIO
Good quality audio to record means less post processing, means less editing
time!
Audio artefacts to consider:
⢠Filler words: Um, Ah, Yeah, You Know, Obviously
⢠Learn to leave a gap while you think
⢠Acknowledgements by sound: MmmmâŚ, YeahâŚ., Ah hahâŚ
⢠Stay silent!
⢠Lip smacks [Demonstration]
⢠Donât close your mouth!
⢠Mouth clicks
⢠Stay well hydrated
⢠Table noises/bumps
⢠Isolate your microphones
⢠Be like a Thunderbird!
⢠Plosives, Sibalance
⢠Practice microphone technique and Know your Microphone!

PRODUCTION PLANNING
⢠Plan for least editing
⢠Audio from Live radio can be difficult to edit if you donât plan
⢠Use theme music, cold sweepers etc. to provide editing points
⢠If you have two guests and want to Podcast to separate episodes, make
sure you plan for this
⢠For a pre-record make sure you have appropriate pauses before and
after your recording for edit points

AUDIO THEORY
⢠Compression
⢠In auditing editing dynamic
compression reduces the
distance between the quietest
and loudest parts (the dynamic
range) of an audio signal,
resulting in a more consistent
overall volume.
⢠Like an automatic volume knob
⢠If you are listening to audio and
feel you need an automatic
volume knob, then you will likely
benefit by using compression.
⢠NOT File Size Compression

P O D C A S T W O R K S H O P
PRODUCTION â DESTRUCTIVE VS EDL
IMPORTANT NOTE:
⢠Audacity is a destructive audio editor working on its on copy of
imported audio
⢠Most other DAWs are based on Edit Decision Lists (EDLs), edits are just
pointers to locations in original audio
⢠While Audacity is destructive, it keeps Undo history, but this can take up a
lot of spac
⢠In Audacity, effects are applied and the audio waveform adjusted
⢠In most other DAWs, effects are applied in real time
⢠If you are happy editing with Undo / Redo and have ample disk space
then Audacity is fine.

AUDACITY - MANUAL EDITS
⢠Compression
⢠Reduce dynamic range
⢠Do first so you bring out noise, otherwise you may find you need to further edit if
you compress last.
⢠Cuts
⢠Remove unwanted audio, music, ads, irrelevant chatter
⢠Remove Filler Words
⢠Breaths, noise
⢠Commonly use volume reduction as cuts may sound unnatural with the natural
flow of voice
⢠Mouth Clicks, Clicks
⢠Volume reduction or Module
⢠Hum, 50Hz or other
