WHY DO WE LISTEN
• Podcast listeners also revealed they prefer original content rather than catch-
up radio podcasts, with the majority (76%) of episodes listened to in the past
month being original podcasts
• Podcast listeners continue to be driven by audio that entertains, teaches or
informs them
• Comedy podcasts appeal more to a younger audience (14 – 34) while Society
and Culture and Health and Lifestyle appeal more to an older audience (55+)
• Word of mouth is the number 1 means of discovering new podcasts. But
when choosing between options, listeners are most motivated to try new
podcasts from the Episode Descriptions (including Headline, 71%) and
Recommendations (70%)
• ‘At Home’ remains the most common location for podcast listening (76%),
although a large proportion of podcast listeners aged between 14 – 34 are
listening to podcasts while they are out and about.

ROOM AND ENVIRONMENT
Factors to consider for your recording environment
• Room acoustics – smaller the better
• Room noise – internal and external
• Room clutter – things you or your guest might ‘bump’
• Will you be using video? What’s in the background?
• Always TEST your environment.
• Always LISTEN in your headphones.
• Note on recording processing – unless broadcasting Live, TURN OFF!
• Always make sure to record some ‘SILENCE’.

• Zoom – Inbuilt Recording
• Skype – usually poor quality, hard to record locally
• Cleanfeed.net
• Choice of Alive 90.5 FM for ease of use, both remote guests and Outside
Broadcasts
• Multiple remote guests
• Can record with Free version or use other local recording.
• Audio only.
• Other options, see PODCAST ONLINE SERVICES (next slide)
• Some offer both remote and local recordings
• Local recordings useful if poor connection between host and guests
• Cloud recordings often mutitrack which are different than a mono/stereo
audio file.

QUALITY AUDIO
Good quality audio to record means less post processing, means less editing
time!
Audio artefacts to consider:
• Filler words: Um, Ah, Yeah, You Know, Obviously
• Learn to leave a gap while you think
• Acknowledgements by sound: Mmmm…, Yeah…., Ah hah…
• Stay silent!
• Lip smacks [Demonstration]
• Don’t close your mouth!
• Mouth clicks
• Stay well hydrated
• Table noises/bumps
• Isolate your microphones
• Be like a Thunderbird!
• Plosives, Sibalance
• Practice microphone technique and Know your Microphone!

PRODUCTION PLANNING
• Plan for least editing
• Audio from Live radio can be difficult to edit if you don’t plan
• Use theme music, cold sweepers etc. to provide editing points
• If you have two guests and want to Podcast to separate episodes, make
sure you plan for this
• For a pre-record make sure you have appropriate pauses before and
after your recording for edit points

range) of an audio signal,

overall volume.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
• Audacity is a destructive audio editor working on its on copy of
imported audio
• Most other DAWs are based on Edit Decision Lists (EDLs), edits are just
pointers to locations in original audio
• While Audacity is destructive, it keeps Undo history, but this can take up a
lot of spac
• In Audacity, effects are applied and the audio waveform adjusted
• In most other DAWs, effects are applied in real time
• If you are happy editing with Undo / Redo and have ample disk space
then Audacity is fine.
