The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a hierarchy that breaks down a project into smaller tasks and packages. It splits the task list into logical packages that can be used for cost control and reporting. The lowest level of each activity in the WBS should be an individual task that can be completed by one person within a defined time period. However, the WBS does not show task dependencies, durations, or resource requirements. Alternative structures include the Product Breakdown Structure, which breaks down complex products into components, and the Cost Breakdown Structure, which identifies cost categories and should be completed after the WBS.

This document discusses baseline scheduling basics and provides guidance on schedule development and review standards. It recommends that schedules be developed with sufficient detail early, include all contractual requirements, and not include tricks to position for claims. If a schedule is not approved, the document advises examining legal risks and managing the project using the last submitted schedule. It also discusses early completion schedules, different types of calendars, and developing a standardized review checklist.

The document discusses defining the scope, priorities, and work breakdown structure (WBS) of a project in 5 steps: 1) defining the project scope, 2) establishing priorities, 3) creating a WBS, 4) integrating the WBS with the organizational structure, and 5) coding the WBS for an information system. It emphasizes that the scope, WBS, and organizational responsibilities should be clearly defined to plan, monitor, and control the project.
The document discusses how to create a work breakdown structure (WBS) in project management. A WBS breaks down project deliverables and work into smaller, more manageable components. It divides complex projects into simpler tasks. This allows tasks to be more easily supervised, estimated, and managed. A WBS provides a framework for cost estimating, scheduling, and control. It helps managers plan, budget, define roles, and coordinate project elements.
The document contains questions and explanations for a PMI scheduling professional exam. Question 1 asks about the next process after creating a work breakdown structure, and the explanation states it is the define activities process. Question 2 asks about a scheduling technique that identifies predecessor and successor activities, and the explanation identifies it as the precedence diagramming method. The remaining questions cover topics like communicating project reports, shortening a project schedule, defining milestones, and calculating schedule variance.

1. Earned value management (EVM) metrics can help identify specific trades or scopes of work contributing to schedule slippage and poor performance. This allows for targeted mitigation strategies.
2. To effectively use EVM for schedule compression, the baseline schedule needs to be thoroughly coded to allow export and analysis of performance data by trade or work type.
3. Exporting schedule data to a spreadsheet enables pivot tables and charts to examine historical performance trends for each trade. This highlights which trades need additional resources or management to meet goals for schedule compression.
The document discusses project planning and outlines several key points:
1. Careful planning is important for project success and reduces time needed for implementation. Planning should not result in "paralysis by analysis" and must balance analysis with action.
2. The primary purpose of planning is to establish directions in sufficient detail to define what must be done, when, and with what resources to successfully complete deliverables.
3. Characteristics of a good plan include meeting organizational objectives, allowing for uncertainty and risk, and including means to control work.
The document discusses the key processes within project scope management: plan scope management, collect requirements, define scope, create a work breakdown structure (WBS), validate scope, and control scope. It describes each process's inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs. A key tool is decomposition, which involves breaking the project deliverables into smaller, more manageable components within the WBS. The main outputs include the scope baseline, which defines the project scope and can only change via formal change control, and work performance information that monitors scope status and manages changes. Formal scope validation involves verifying deliverables meet requirements to obtain stakeholder acceptance.
The document discusses project planning and scheduling. It covers topics like work breakdown structure, project time scheduling, network diagrams, critical path method, Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), Gantt charts, and key terms used in project management like activities, milestones, float, baselines. Project planning involves preparing schedules of activities, resources, capital, and mitigation plans. Work breakdown structure is used to divide large projects into simpler, more manageable components. Network diagrams and critical path method are used to schedule project activities and identify the critical path. PERT uses three time estimates to calculate expected activity durations. Gantt charts graphically show project schedules and status.

4. Pianificazione - WBS
• La Work Breakdown Structure è una gerarchia
delle attività orientata ai deliverable per
scomporre i componenti del progetto che
definiscono lo scopo totale del progetto. La
WBS è una rappresentazione dell’ambito del
progetto che specifica il lavoro che deve
essere completato.
Torino 25 ottobre 2012 4
Torino 18 ottobre 2012 7
8. Sviluppo della WBS
• Identificazione dei compiti
• Per ogni work package occorre indicare:
• La descrizione delle attività da svolgere comprese
quelle di controllo qualità
• evento di chiusura
• gli input attesi eventualmente da altre attività
• Gli output previsti
• mesi uomo richiesti
• vincoli
Torino 25 ottobre 2012 8
9. Scopo della WBS
• Organizzare il lavoro che deve essere fatto
• Illustrare il lavoro che deve essere fatto
• Assicurarsi che tutto il lavoro necessario sia
stato identificato
• Dividere il lavoro in piccoli e ben identificate
attività

17. Rolling Wave Planning
informazioni sono meno definite, i work package possono
essere scomposti a livello di milestone. All’aumentare delle
