PM - Proposta de Rede Cicloviária para Aveiro (Cycling Network Proposal)
1. Cycle network
proposal to the city of Aveiro, Portugal
Master in Regional and Urban Planning
Mobility Planning 2016/2017
Professors: Frederico de Sá and José Carlos Mota
Students: David Havran, Giulio Suffritti, Giacomo Zanardi, José Otávio Braga, Lucas de Macedo and
Vanessa Passos
2. OBJECTIVES
General
Design a cycling network proposal for the urban core of Aveiro and its immediate
connections to promote mixed land use and make the bicycle a means of transport of
displacement.
Specifics
Create cycling connections of Aveiro and its nearby parishes;
Create a connected and safe cycle path network;
Attract people to the daily cycling use (using UBike, for example);
Improve the cycling culture.
3. METHODOLOGY
1. Area of analysis and influence radius;
2. Map the existing cycle paths;
3. Identify the desire lines and main attractive/traffic generator points;
4. Identify the typology and measure the dimensions of the streets & check streets maximum speed, their traffic
volume and analysis the stress level;
5. Identify possible connections and draw the network proposal connecting the point and the routes;
6. Decide the backbone structural route in the network as the best way to connect the interesting points;
7. Create an Ecological Cycling Network;
8. Evaluate the suitable typology - shared street, cycle lane or cycleway for each street;
9. Propose and design new preliminary street arranges to show viability;
10. Develop a plan with different phases for cycling network implementation.
7. 3. Cycling Network Proposal
Length of proposed
Cycling Network:
46,9 km
Just in the Urban
Core:
34 km
8. 4. Ecological Cycling Network
To take
advantage of the
environmental
characteristics of
Ria and other
landscapes, we
propose the
cyclepaths
marked as green.
They are
cyclepaths close
to points that will
incentivize its use
and potentialities,
such as:
tourism, sport and
ecologic
education.
9. 5. Network proposal and influence radius (5km)
The circle indicates
the radius of 5km
from University of
Aveiro. With the
network and its
connections, is it
possible to bring
people safely from
nearby parishes
and even other
municipalities like
Ílhavo.
10. 6. Rules/criteria for implementing network
I. Implement safer design solutions in the streets, especially in the intersections (e.g.
Bike box);
II. Streets with not so much traffic and small speed limits should receive shared
solutions and/or 30 km/h zone;
III. Improve segregation level according to speed limits and stress level for cyclists.
IV. Make sure that cars won’t be able to pass 50km/h in the area comprehended by
the cycle network, with design and monitoring solutions;
V. Take off public street parking if necessary to implement cyclepaths;
VI. Always avoid to take space from pedestrians. If it’s shared with pedestrians, make
sure that it has enough space for it to be safe.

27. 9. Typologies of Cycling Network Proposal
Total length:
46,9km
- Cycleways:
22,9km
- Cyclelanes:
12,8 km
- Shared Streets:
5,9 km
- Coexistence:
5,3 km
28. 10. Implementation Phases for Network Proposal
The proposal
foresees a network
that prioritizes, in a
first moment the
integration
between existing
cycling
infrastructure, and
then extends to
routes that
connect to other
parts of Aveiro
and external
connections.
29. CONCLUSIONS
Aveiro has good topography and many streets in the urban core without much
traffic volume. In this way, it is possible to create a good, comfortable and
connected cycling network that will take advantage of the desire lines,
interesting points and environmental landscapes without the necessity of
spending a lot of money, being it achievable to the medium term of 2025 or
sooner.
Besides, it is also possible to make connections with nearby parishes and other
municipalities, as it has already been noticed the will to be connected between
all them.
30. THE PROJECT EXPERIENCE
The present work had as an advantage the cultural diversity and interdisciplinarity
of the group elements. Proposing a cycling network for the city of Aveiro allowed
us different approaches and dynamics in the way we perceive the city.
As well, we were awakened for being closer and more interested in bike-usage as
a way to get around.
The greatest challenge faced is the short space of time to reach an even greater
degree of detail, since, from the time available, it leaves us glad and satisfied with
the result and learnings obtained, letting us comfortable to participate in public
policies for bike commutes.
