Death of a Themer - Frontend United - 14 April 2013Matt Fielding
"Death of a themer" was presented by James Panton and myself at Frontend United on 14th April 2013. This was a revised and extended talk of the same name presented by James at DrupalCamp London on 2nd March 2013.
http://www.slideshare.net/therealmcjim/death-of-a-themer-drupal-camplondon2013
Themers are the magicians who transform what Drupal wants to do into what the designer wants it to do. They work alongside developers and site builders and are usually hammering out CSS files, overriding templates, writing theme functions and scratching their heads.
The thing is — and whisper this if possible redundancy concerns you — we can bypass the themer entirely.
With some simple configuration, a site builder can get Drupal to output exactly the semantic, lightweight markup that any modern front-end designer would be proud of. The designer can be left alone to write the most appropriate HTML, CSS and JS, while the site builder need only choose a couple of options when putting together content types, views and panels to make Drupal behave.
A friendly developer may have to lend a hand every now and then, but that’s it. You can get rid of the themer altogether.
This is an extended version of a session James did recently but will take a closer look at the tools and workflow we created and the design principles that initially drove us to this approach.
We’ve all built a ton of WordPress sites. We’ve also managed them all too. You’ve probably heard about WordPress Multisite Networks, and all the awesome things it can (and can’t) allow you to do.
With great power, comes great responsibility. During this talk, Taylor will step through the do’s and don’ts of Multisite Networks. He will share how WordPress Multisite can be your best friend or worst enemy… but usually both… at the same time.
Expect pro-tips, eureka moments, and hard lessons learned from his experience setting up and running multisite networks for small private company intranets, all the way to global enterprise brands.
By the end of this talk you will know the pros and cons of WordPress Multisite Networks, best practices for setting up and running a multisite, and know about alternatives if multisite isn’t a fit for your next project.

The WP REST API infrastructure was introduced in WordPress 4.4. The introduction of this infrastructure allows WordPress developers to now use WordPress as a headless CMS. A headless CMS has its frontend component (the head) stripped and removed from its backend, and what remains is a backend delivering content via an API. Some common use cases for headless CMS are as follows:
Serving data to other web applications
Mobile Apps
Websites and web apps built with MVC-style JavaScript frameworks
Developers can install the WP REST API plugin to expose endpoints for WordPress for posts, pages, media and users. Developers can also extend the WordPress core REST infrastructure to register their own endpoints for custom post types and WordPress options.
The WP REST API plugin will expose database content via JSON. This data can be used by developers to create sites using JavaScript frameworks such as React and also use the JSON data in mobile apps.
Bronson will explain and demonstrate how you can use WordPress and the WP REST API to create a website that uses React on the frontend and WordPress on the backend as a headless CMS.

Magento 2 Performance: Every Second CountsJoshua Warren
On the web, every second counts. Studies have shown that a 1 second delay in load time can cost a mid-sized eCommerce company $2.5 million per year in lost revenue. Let’s look at what Magento 2 has done to improve performance and how we can take things a step further to ensure the Magento 2 sites we build and maintain are well designed, well written and very, very fast.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Innovating Inference - Remote Triggering of Large Language Models on HPC Clus...Globus
Large Language Models (LLMs) are currently the center of attention in the tech world, particularly for their potential to advance research. In this presentation, we'll explore a straightforward and effective method for quickly initiating inference runs on supercomputers using the vLLM tool with Globus Compute, specifically on the Polaris system at ALCF. We'll begin by briefly discussing the popularity and applications of LLMs in various fields. Following this, we will introduce the vLLM tool, and explain how it integrates with Globus Compute to efficiently manage LLM operations on Polaris. Attendees will learn the practical aspects of setting up and remotely triggering LLMs from local machines, focusing on ease of use and efficiency. This talk is ideal for researchers and practitioners looking to leverage the power of LLMs in their work, offering a clear guide to harnessing supercomputing resources for quick and effective LLM inference.

Large Language Models and the End of ProgrammingMatt Welsh
Talk by Matt Welsh at Craft Conference 2024 on the impact that Large Language Models will have on the future of software development. In this talk, I discuss the ways in which LLMs will impact the software industry, from replacing human software developers with AI, to replacing conventional software with models that perform reasoning, computation, and problem-solving.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. 4. What’s this about all
about?
● What can I use it for?
● And where do I put it on the site?
● Action (without lights and cameras?)
● Some documentation.
● Farewell.
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
5. Reusable snippets [shortcodes]
● Reuses ... what?
● Reusable snippet = reusable code.
● Can be used anywhere on the site.
● You do it your way.
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
6. I understand ... and what can I use it
for?
For whatever you need!
● Customize your site with these tools your way.
● You do not have to repeat code.
● You can do them yourself or look for some implemented code
on the internet.
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
7. Excellent! And how do I
create them?
● It’s code, so you can simply use your favorite editor.
● Add them to the theme's functions.php file.
● Use them on your site!
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
9. A shortcode is added to the site using the syntax [nameshortcode].
You can receive parameters [nameshortcode parameter = "Hello"].
You can also send content [nameshortcode] Hello Mom! [/
Shortcode].
The shortcode will return a string that will be written to the page.
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
10. After creating your shortcode, we tell Wordpress that we want to
use it.
To do this, we use the following instruction:
add_shortcode ('name_user', 'create_user');
In our case:
add_shortcode ('nameshortcode', 'say hi_to_mom');
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
11. And then what?
Now comes the simple part:
You just have to place the shortcode in the editor in your entry or
page:
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
12. And in your post / page you will see this:
Yes, that's it.
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
13. Are there any predefined shortcodes?
Sure! Wordpress has the following:
● [audio] - https://codex.wordpress.org/Audio_Shortcode
● [caption] - https://codex.wordpress.org/Caption_Shortcode
● [embed] - https://codex.wordpress.org/Embed_Shortcode
● [gallery] - https://codex.wordpress.org/Gallery_Shortcode
● [playlist] - https://codex.wordpress.org/Playlist_Shortcode
● [video] - https://codex.wordpress.org/Video_Shortcode
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
15. We can use these online tools
https://generatewp.com/shortcodes/
https://www.nimbusthemes.com/add-shortcode-wordpress-snippe
t-generator
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
16. When using the tool
Both will give us a text or code, which we must place in the file
functions.php of the theme of our site.
Then, we can use the shortcode in the input or page we want!
// Add Shortcode
function custom_shortcode() {
return '<span>Hola mamá, mira lo que hice</span>';
}
add_shortcode( 'testing', 'custom_shortcode' );
@rhonaldomaster #WCBogota
