Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
2. Location
• For my photo-shoot there are various different places it could take place. For my
magazine cover the photo-shoot can be taken in practically any location with a light
background as I am planning to transform the background completely white as seen
in my inspirational texts and in my research I found that a lot of covers had blank
backgrounds which benefited them. I will be using Photoshop to edit/improve my
magazine and will use the wand tool to create the white background.
• I will be shooting in my dining room where there is a plain wall which will be
convenient. I will also shoot outside on some steps where my model will sit as seen
in one of my image inspirations. There will be photos that I took from a festival
included in my magazine to create a new ‘festival fashion’ topic. The beach will also
be a location used for my ‘summer wear’ section in my magazine.
4. Make up and Hair
• For one of my models I am going to use neutral make up including light
tones and a little blusher to give her some colour. I am going to go with
the winged eyeliner as it is popular and my target audience can relate. The
colour will go well with the plain white background scenery.
• For the hair, my models will have natural/wavy hair as it represents the
different fashion seasons I am including in my magazine. This will make it
look windswept and relate to my audience of women. I will change the
hair to being tied up to down to maybe half and half in variation
depending on which outfit the model is wearing.
5. Poses and Props
• The poses my model will fulfil will complement the clothes and show them
off well. They will be feminine poses to suit the model and to relate the
audience of women. I want the model to look happy but still a sense of
maturity within it to try portray a welcoming yet sophisticated magazine.
This will convince and persuade the audience to buy the clothing as the
purpose lies.
• The props that will be used are items such as a scarf for the outfit, steps
for scenery, tree branches and leaves to give affect of the season. It will
also give more life to the image to make them more eye-catching.
6. Camera
• I will be using my iPhone minimally for the photo-shoot but mainly my
digital camera which produces a high quality, clear photo. This allows the
photos to look professional within a suitable contrast to the themes of the
photos. They both suit different contrasts of themes and work well with
differed lighting and zooming.
