Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

11. The video begins with an elderly woman
bursting into a church.
She walks down the centre through the pews
and comes face to face with an old TV, showing
a static screen.
We see her insert an old VHS into the TV and
the television starts to show old memories from
her life.
Her young self and her now deceased partner
are shown in flashes from the past. We see a
variety of scenarios, which demonstrate how
much they were there for one another and how
much they loved each other.
12. Scenarios include:
• Moving out/in together
• Lifting heavy items
• Afternoon tea/picnic
• Babies/children
• Proposal/Marriage
We see her looking a mirror as a young woman,
yet the reflection is that of her older self
showing that she still believes herself to be
youthful and energetic.
This allows the audience to fully understand
what is going on and to feel emotion for the
woman and to sympathise with her.
The video ends with running back to church.
16. Location is a vital part of the aesthetic of the music video and so whatever we
choose needs to be “spot-on” and must be able to convey a certain
feeling/atmosphere.
Preferably, a white walled room would be used for
the performance so that the projected images are
clear and show up well.
Many people see church as being a safe place as it is
the house of God and many people seek comfort in
this and to seek comfort in the end of an era – as the
woman comes to terms with her age - would be
fitting.
20. For the artist name we decided on ‘Valerie’.
Valerie works as a tribute to the late Amy
Winehouse who has influenced a lot of modern day
music with her unique voice and power.
Using just one name adds punch and is memorable
for anyone looking to find the artist on iTunes or
simply wanting to tell their friends about the new
music they just discovered.
Other names we thought of included foreign
influences, double-barrels and personal takes on
existing stage names.
22. A soft, simple make-up look for the performer is ideal as we wanted to dress her
all in white, so that the projections appear clearly.
However, we could play with pops of colour, such as that with red lipstick so that
this is the only really vibrant colour we see at that time, creating an interesting
contrast.
For hair, either a loose up-do or long curls would be the best option, because it’s
not too formal and looks relaxed, giving off a calm vibe, matching the song.
25. In order to create a contrast between the old and young (in all respects), an aspect
we will take into account is colour and using that to portray different things.
For example, we have proposed to dressing the older woman in black, with
connotations of sadness, despair and death – symbolising the death of her
relationship with her partner and the death of her husband himself.
In contrast, we would clothe the younger version of the woman in white, in
accordance with innocence, purity and heaven. This would work as the woman
would be in “heaven”, classing her love and relationship as pure bliss and a state of
happiness and good health.
