Why I want to use these
                              conventions...
I want to use a weapon In my film as a the main prop as in most horror films weapons are used and create a scary tense atmosphere especially if the evil
character is chasing the good character. AN EXAMPLE OF A FILM WHERE A WEPON IS KEY IS THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
I want to interpret death and murders into my film as having death in particular is one of the main elements that occurs during a horror film. I want to use
this idea in my own work and create a evil murderous character and then have my main character then also try to kill him at the end (as the evil character is
trying to kill her). AN EXAMPLE WHERE KILLING PEOPLE ONE BY ONE IS FINAL DESTINATION.
From my audience research (my survey, questionnaire and focus group) I found that the most popular and most liked locations are the Woods and houses.
In order to create a successful film/film trailer I think it is important to follow the feedback I received as it will enable me to create an effective and
successful trailer that my target audience will be attracted to. AN EXAMPLE OF A FILM SET IN A HOUSE IS THE PACT, WRONG TURN IS AN EXAMPLE OF A
FILM SET IN A WOOD.
A stereotypical convention of a horror film is having a Evil character. I too would like to follow this convention and briefly introduce the character in the
trailer without giving too much away so that my audience is left scared and uncertain about him. EXAMPLES OF FILMS
From my questionnaire, focus group and survey I found that a typical feature they expect to see in a horror is “Darkness” and the idea that everything is
spooky and scary. I will create this effect by using low key lighting and filming during the late evening hours so that I meet my audiences expectations. I am
going to be filming a lot of my trailer within the woods; I think this will add to the “darkness” and will create an overall scary atmosphere. All horror films
create this dark scary tone/lighting to fit in with the genre and create a more intense and scary experience for the viewer.
I want to interrupt Chase sequences especially into my film trailer because it builds up suspense and creates a tense atmosphere; especially if I end my
trailer on a cliff hanger it will make my audience question what's going to happen. I want to include fast moving, flashing chase shots to build up suspense.
AN EXAMPLE OF A CHASE SEQUENCE IN FILM WOULD BE HALLOWEEN. I think in the trailer for The Pact and in the film in general there are a lot of fast
moving scary chase shots which I would like to use in my trailer. Especially because The Pact is a modern film it creates a realistic sense which I would also
like to create.
From my audience research I found that using scary sound effects is a must. My focus group told me that using sound effects was essential for a horror film.
I think the music for a trailer is very important, it helps an audience engage with the scenes and get more into the film if the scenes and music matches. For
my film trailer I am going to use fast upbeat music/scary music when there are fast moving shots and the shots quickly change from one to the other and
then for the longer, “calmer” shots I will use slower music yet still music that shows that the film is a horror.
My focus group said that the use of dark colours is important to set the atmosphere and the use of blackouts and music to build up tension is important for
a successful film trailer. From my survey and focus group I found that they are all typical features that they expect. Therefore in order for me to create a
trailer that my target audience will enjoy and will encourage them to watch the film, I must include these things.
I want to use a lot of hand held shots within my film trailer to create a “uncertain” atmosphere. I want to make my audience feel on edgy and I want them
to feel like they are there too. AN EXAMPLE OF A FILM THAT USES HANDHELD SHOTS TO CREATE MORE OF A REALISTIC VIEW ON THE FILM IS
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Using handheld shots in general make the film appear to be not as structured which creates a more realistic vibe and makes an
audience feel like they are there and experiencing the events within the film; which is very effective as it makes the film more tense and scary…which is
what a viewer expects from a horror.
FINAL DESTINATION

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

    HALLOWEEN PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

                                             WRONG TURN
              THE PACT
I want to challenge...
I want to challenge the stereotypical convention of there
being an Innocent main character and therefore
introduce a main character who turns into the innocent
one yet starts off as a bad character.
I also want to challenge the idea that “all” films follow
Lisa Mulveys Male Gaze theory. Instead of creating a
character that is the idea of “perfect” and wears
leather tight costumes and shows off flesh and her
assets to attract more male viewers I am going to
create a “normal” average modern day character that
my target audience can relate to.
Levis-Strauss
Levi-Strauss looked at narrative structure in terms of binary oppositions.
A typical opposition would be “good” and “bad/evil”, as an audience we
are able to identify that these two types of character are opposites and
would be easily recognisable in a film.
Other examples include:
-Earth Vs. Space
-Humans Vs. Aliens
I would like to follow Levis-Strauss’ binary oppositions idea by including a good and
bad character. Yet I would like to challenge the idea of there being opposites and
introduce two “bad characters”. One character being a murderous male that takes
the role as the “wolf” metaphorically and the other being the girl who “cries wolf”
who is portrayed as a bad character (because she used to lie a lot) but we discover
that really she is a good character.
In my trailer I am going to portray my good and bad oppositions. Stereotypically in
horrors there is a bad and a good/good characters, therefore I am keeping to the
typical horror convention making it more likely that my film will be successful. I
would also be meeting the convention and audience expectations as sometimes in
horrors the “good characters” have a bad side and may for example: be a slut or
smoke drugs and therefore then have a “right to die” as such. I would be following
this idea as my “good” character used to lie a lot.
My trailer…
After looking at a variety of horror trailers I have seen a distinct
connection between them. Most trailer contain the following things:
-darkness
-fast moving shots
-flashes of shots
-fast shots linked with fast tempo music
-music throughout
-subtitles to enlighten the audience about the details of the film/to
show reviews
-show the title of the film (so that the audience watches the whole
trailer)
I would like to include all of these things into my own trailer, so it is
successful, in the hope that my target audience will engage in the film
trailer and will want to watch the whole thing/the film.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I am going to be mostly following
the same stereotypical conventions of a horror
which will enable my audience to recognise the
genre. It also creates the effect that my film will
be more successful if I use typical conventions.
For my trailer I will use fast moving shots that
flash on the screen quickly creating tension and
will hopefully scare my audience.
