How Often Are Studies Wrong?
Ivan Oransky presented on the frequency of irreproducible studies and the costs associated with non-reproducible preclinical research. An analysis of 53 landmark studies found that scientific findings were confirmed in only 6 cases (11%), despite limitations being acknowledged upfront. A separate analysis found that over 50% of cumulative preclinical research is irreproducible, costing $28 billion annually in the US alone. Oransky also discussed rising retraction rates and efforts by scientists to address issues of reproducibility.

In 2014, I returned to the Biology Department after being the director of a York University research institute for 7 years. Based on that experience, I expanded the topics discussed at my weekly lab meetings to include more of the so-called "soft-skills" that were not being explicitly covered in science courses . This included the topic of ethics in research.
I also introduced science communication training for my students. This included showing students how to make Pecha Kucha style presentations. Here is my 20 slide x 20 seconds talk on the topic of ethical behaviour in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Thinking about Twitter for Academics
This document discusses using Twitter as an academic and provides tips for doing so effectively. It notes that Twitter can be used to brand oneself, find relevant papers and funding opportunities, promote one's work, and recruit for clinical trials or labs. However, it cautions that one should avoid hypocrisy, mixing of personal and professional accounts, and going "hashtag crazy." What is ‘research impact’ in an interconnected world?
This talk looks at what researchers need to do to ensure their research is widely disseminated and reaches the largest audience possible. In summary: Publishing a paper is the beginning not the end; Making work open access does not mean it is accessible; Writing in plain language is translating, not dumbing it down; Sharing work involves peer networks and publishing platforms and If you don't take control of your online presence someone/something else will. The presentation was originally given as part of the Cambridge University Alumni Festival on 27 September 2015.
Information Ethics and Clinical Decision Making

Scientific Fraud, Retractions, and the Future of Scientific Publishing
Ivan Oransky gave a presentation on scientific fraud, retractions, and the future of scientific publishing. He discussed the rise in retractions, particularly due to image manipulation and fake data. Most retractions are due to misconduct. Highly cited fraudulent papers continue to be cited even after retraction. Journals often fail to adequately notify readers of retractions. There is a move toward more transparency in retraction notices and post-publication peer review. However, not all are happy with the increased authority of sites like PubPeer to represent the scientific community. Oransky concluded that crime does not pay anymore in scientific publishing, while doing the right thing is being recognized.

Kara Gavin is a public relations representative at Michigan Medicine who communicates science to general audiences. She trains researchers on how to effectively communicate their work to non-experts and helps disseminate research findings. A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
