4. Hydraulic piling vibrators
■ Standard Frequency Vibrators
■ High Frequency Vibrators
■ Resonance-Free Vibrators
■ Excavator Mounted Vibrators
The main element of the Vibrator is the Gear Case. This contains an even number of
eccentric weights which rotate at high speed. These are arranged in pairs to rotate at the
same speed but in opposite directions. As a result the horizontal forces are cancelled out
leaving the vertical forces effective on the pile.
The vibrations are isolated from the crane by a suppressor housing which is connected to
the vibrator gear case by rubber elastomers which provide additional static weight onto
the pile.
The vibrator is operated by a diesel hydraulic power pack and is connected to the pile by
powerful hydraulic clamps.
Pile Driving and Extracting with Vibrators
The principle of driving with a vibrator is the reduction of friction between the pile and the
ground.
The vibrator causes the pile to vibrate which reduces the friction between the pile and
the ground and between the individual soil particles adjacent to the pile. This reduces
resistance and the pile penetrates under its own weight and the weight of the vibrator.
Vibrators are ideal for extracting plies using a suitable crane pull due to the considerable
reduction in surface friction.

The traditional standard frequency vibrators are well established and combine maximum amplitude with high
centrifugal force.
These robust, heavier machines are particularly effective when driving long, heavy section piles or large diameter tubes.
The Standard Frequency Vibrator
has a robust design combined
with reliable performance and
ease of use. These Vibrators
are especially effective in
cohesive soil conditions where
alternative machines may fail.
High amplitude is particularly
valuable when extracting piles
or driving large diameter tubes.

High frequency vibrators
High frequency vibrators, sometimes called ‘City’ vibrators, are designed to minimise and localise potentially hazardous
vibrations.
These machines operate between 2000 and 2500 rpm, which is higher than the naturally occurring frequencies of most
major soil types and thus reduces the risk of harmful resonances.

Resonance-free vibrators
Resonance-free vibrators have all the advantages
of high frequency technology but in addition the
eccentric moment can be switched on or off.
When the vibrator is started the eccentric moment
is switched off and no vibrations are generated.
Once the vibrator has reached its operating
frequency (2300 rpm) the eccentric moment is
switched on and vibration immediately commences
at this frequency.
Similarly, when stopping, the eccentric moment is
switched off before the vibrator slows down.
This avoids transmitting resonances to the crane jib.
In addition the amplitude can be infinitely adjusted
to avoid exceeding the maximum permitted peak
particle velocity
■ High frequency produces less ground vibration
■ No harmful low frequency vibrations during
starting and stopping
■ Can be used closer to buildings than
conventional vibrators
■ Suitable for use with telescopic cranes

Excavator mounted vibrators
Excavator Mounted Vibrators are specifically designed as pile driving and extracting attachments for excavators. They
have a high power/weight ratio due to their high operating frequency and an added advantage is the ability to apply an
additional vertical force from the excavator if needed to assist driving.
The Excavator Mounted Vibrator (EMV) can be attached to the excavator in two ways either via a bracket directly to the
dipper arm and plumbed into the excavator’s hydraulic system, or via a Piletec “ VibroSafe” adaptor. This exclusive design
is a quick hitch adaptor which can be used with a fully automatic quick hitch coupler with no human intervention
required.
The “Vibrosafe” adaptor is fully strain tested and CE marked. (see page 12)
The EMV is of a slim design to enable it to drive between adjacent upstanding piles. If required however, the clamp can
be removed and refitted at 90 degrees enabling piling to be carried out close to an existing structure.
For special applications the EMV can be operated from a power pack.

Pre Auger
The Piletec Pre Auger is the perfect solution when pre-
driving in stiff ground conditions. Pre-augering breaks
up the soil, effectively turning cohesive soil into non-
cohesive soil, thus enabling vibratory hammers to be
used where impact hammers would normally have to
be brought in. The Auger is fitted in exactly the same
way as the Excavator Mounted Vibrator utilising the
same excavator which reduces the costs significantly
as the need for an expensive crane is eliminated along
with the associated transport costs.

Double-acting hydraulic impact hammers
Double-Acting Hydraulic Impact Hammers are designed
to drive a wide range of pile types and sizes including
single steel sheet piles, universal steel bearing piles and
tubular piles.
The SL range of hammers concentrate the impact on a
single pile providing the most effective use of the high
energy produced. The low overall weight of the hammer
avoids the necessity to use large cranes. The stroke is
infinitely adjustable allowing full control at all stages
of the driving. Safety and accuracy are assured via the
inserts which are spring-loaded enabling the hammer to
remain correctly located on the pile at all times.
The CX range of hammers can be used on a wide range
of pile types and sizes:
■ Steel sheet piles in pairs
■ Universal tubular bearing piles
■ Steel ‘H’ piles
■ Steel combi piles
■ Reinforced concrete RC piles
■ Cast in situ CIS piles
■ Timber piles
Selection of the correct
ram weight depends on
pile section, length &
ground conditions. The
SL & CX hammers can be
used crane suspended.
The controls allow the
operator to adjust the
stroke and blow rate
and the hammer can be
operated on automatic
or by manual operation
on each blow.

Vibration monitor
Ratchet release shackle
Piletec’s V901 Vibration Meter is designed to measure construction vibration reliably and efficiently. The V901 is a
battery powered portable vibration monitor, purpose designed for measuring blasting, piling, demolition, construction
and traffic vibrations.
■ Accurate measurement of ground vibration
■ Specialist advice on environmental effects of ground engineering techniques
■ Avoid potential damage claims
■ Risk analysis
■ Download results to PC
Piling Shackles are designed specifically for pitching trench sheets and piles using
appropriate lifting equipment. They must not be used for pile extraction. Their purpose is
to enable sheet piles to be lifted vertically into temporary guides and then released quickly
and safely from ground level once the sheet or pile is secured.
The shackles have the advantage that the release mechanism is operated from ground
level. This speeds up the positioning of the piles, saving time and money and increases
safety on what has traditionally been a slow and laborious task.

Steel sheet piles
Steel Sheet piles and interlocking options
Steel sheet piles are used in a variety of applications from temporary or permanent cofferdams and retaining walls to
marine works and foundation construction.
The pile sections are designed to be as light as possible without compromising strength and durability. The design of
the interlocks offers a good degree of watertightness and aids pitching and driving.
Piletec stock a comprehensive range of heavy section profiles and lengths which are available for delivery to all areas of
the UK and Ireland.
Dependent on ground conditions, consideration must be given to the length of the pile to be driven, depth of
penetration & ground loadings.
For practical and technical advice pleased contact Piletec directly.
Advantages of using sheet piles
■ High strength to weight ratio
■ Good degree of watertightness
■ Comprehensive range of heavy section profiles and lengths available
■ High section modulus leading to reduced deflections
■ Good driving properties and durability
■ Lengths up to 18m available for hire

Note: All hire piles are classed as steel grade S270. All grades available for sale.
Corner sections available.
Various corner sections are available for applications where fully closed cofferdams are required (high water table, poor
ground conditions etc.). This will offer the advantage of greater water/fine material retention. The use of corner sections
will result in specific excavation dimensions depending on the combination of piles/corner sections used.
Note: Piletec are able to advise customers of exact cofferdam dimensions by the use of their Sheet to Sheet pile
configuration software as a means of calculating cofferdam size for a combination of pile/corner/junction combinations.
Please contact Piletec Technical Services for further advice.
