Pieter Brueghel the Elder was a great Flemish painter in the 16th century who became a master of the Painters Guild of Antwerp. He traveled around Europe to learn different styles of painting. Some of his most famous works included landscapes, Netherlandish Proverbs, and paintings depicting peasant life that emphasized their stolidity.
