Physics 101 Learning Object
Time Plots and Position Plots
Question: From the textbook reading, we are introduced to two new tools we can
use to figure out waves; position plots and time plots. Explain why we have two
different plots and what we are able to figure out from them. Furthermore, state the
requirements in order to use these plots. Draw out examples.
Answer: We are given two separate graphs (position plots and time plots) because
if we wish to see them all at once the graph becomes 3D and, as physics 101
students, we currently do not have the math skills to analyze 3D graphs.
From a position plot, where we are required to keep the time fixed, we are
able to determine the amplitude and wavelength of a wave.
From a time plot, where we are required to keep the position fixed, we are
able to determine the amplitude and frequency of a wave.
