PHRASAL VERBS
What is a verb frasal?
In English, phrasal verbs are special verbs
consisting of a verb and a preposition or an adverb
(or a combination of both). For example:
 (Turn) verb + preposition (on): Turn on
Types of phrasal verbs
There are 4 types:
1. Intransitive not separable and without an object:
The plane took off on time
2. Transitive separable with object: Write it down here
3. Transitive separable not with object: I get up at
7:30 am
4. Verbs of two non-separable particles: I can't put up
with this noise
Examples of phrasal verbs
1. Many times a frasal verb can be replaced by another
verb, but must take into account that a frasal verb is
most used in spoken English and common verbs used
in formal situations or writings. As for example:
 I came back tired and hungry
 He returned to Mexico three years later
The 2 above examples demonstrate the use of a frasal
verb to come back as a common verb to return mean
to return, but they are used in different contexts.
2. Some particles maintained its meaning, even when
they are used with other verbs. As for example:
 I'll call you back later
 She wrote to him but He never wrote back
 Carry on with your work
 They stayed on for another week at the hotel
 Drink up! We have to go
 Eat up all your vegetables. They're good for you
 In the examples above we can see the particles back
and on up to keep its meaning despite their
applications with different verbs. because:
back indicates that it returns something (a call, a letter).
on indicates that a sense of continuity is given to verbs.
up indicates that something has ended completely.
