Personal Development, Health and Physical
Education
It is a key learning area within primary school education, which children get to
learn about their whole body and what is needed for them to maintain a healthy
body. Therefore, it is curial to learn about PDHPE to develop their
understanding, knowledge and skills to do with their body and ways to be safe.
Being “informed on health issues and having a sense of control
about the decisions they make, they are more likely to
experience positive relationships, improved quality of life and
less illness.”
There are several concepts involved with having a healthy life,
consequently it is important for children to learn about them and have
this knowledge carried all through their life.

Aims of the syllabus are
to develop positive values
and attitudes, skills and
knowledge towards
healthy living. These are
taught through the subject
matters.

Health
Choices
Fundamental skills that children will gain and will help as
they develop are:
- effective communication
- interaction
- moving
- decision making and problem solving
These will allow them to have confidence, better health
outcomes and improved performance.
More specific reasons to have PDHPE!
• Students are encouraged to partake in physical activity;
• They will be given an understanding of valuing themself and others;
• Assists to develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships;
• They will be more able to make appropriate decisions and perform responsible
actions, from being informed and having an understanding of health issues;
• And finding ways to protect themselves and others, through recognising
situations where their personal safety may be at risk
They leave each lesson with:
 An adoption of physical activity habits. When developed in school years,
they are generally maintained in later life.
 Benefits of a healthy lifestyle and good health include:
 An improved quality of life;
 A reduced amount of sickness and disability;
 Happier personal, family and social experiences.
 All the knowledge gained about themselves, how to be healthy, and their
capabilities, prepares students to work towards better health for
themselves and others.
 They will adopt a responsible and productive role in society, with
maintaining good health and wellbeing.
