Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

fact that we took the
picture in natural lighting
(ISO 800). Manuel focus
was also used as I was
able to focus on the pole
instead of the school.
Composition and framing
The composition and framing in this picture is
explain in that sometimes its what you can’t see in
an image that draws you into it as much as (if not
more than) what you can see in the picture.
However I did take the photo at angle which is why
the pole seems slanted the opposite way to the
school. But the composition of the shot leaves the
center focus being the pole which is in focus.

This picture was taken to

unnatural lighting in that
the lights inside the room
are influencing the colour
of the image to be very

The meaning behind this
picture is that by not
focusing on the individual
the picture unique and
the effect and positioning
of the individual speaks
volumes.
Composition and framing
What we have in this picture is framing with arch
way on the stair case going around the main
focus which is the jumping individual. The
composition of this picture is shown immensely
due to the fact I applied the rule of thirds to the
image to make it obvious where the subject is in
the frame. Apertures f/4.0.

The purpose of this
photograph is to show a
window reflection that
shows to sides to the whole
picture. The window can be
used to look interesting and
effective as you can see the
reflection of me the
cameraman and the
students working in lesson
on the other side.

parallel effect in that we are
able to see to sides of the
story in one picture (The
Camera man is taking a
flash photograph of the
class room environment).

The aperture was quite high so this makes
the picture apply a shallow depth. The
central focus of this picture is the camera
lens, which is slightly faded.
Meaning
The meaning that this picture feeds out is
that there's two sides to one picture
depending on how you decide to portray it
(taking the picture through something
reflective)

This picture is meant to
capture the moment a
subject is jumping in mid air
to make it look like he
hovering.
Image Analysis
The image uses natural
lighting as you can see the
sun reflecting of the subjects
face. The light influences the
colour of the image to be
rather bright.
Meaning
The meaning behind this
picture is there quality in
capturing moving images as
it shows a subjects motion in
detail.
Composition and framing
The framing in this picture is done using
the outline of the ambulance, which
works well with composition of the
jumping subject because it was a
perfectly timed shot when both subjects
were moving at speeds.

which helps in creating an
illusion making the object

The behind this photo is that
I intentionally took the picture
at this angle to catch the light
reflecting of the surface
which makes it look like
there's a dent in the middle.

As this picture was taken at a high
aperture of f/8.0 meaning, while being
exposed to a lot of light leaving the
composition of the picture being in the
middle where the light reflects off the
surface making the object look
disfigured.

The purpose of this image is
to test if a high shutter speed
would be able to capture the
movement of the water
leaving the Posit.
Image Analysis
This image is a good
example of good focus as the
camera was set to a 1/64
second shutter speed and
the ISO was 800.
Meaning
The meaning behind this
image is by using the correct
ISO you are preventing the
image from being to bright
and keeping the image
focused using a low aperture
of f/4.5.
Composition and framing
The framing for this picture is done in
the form of the sink as I aspect people to
focus on what's in the sink (frame). The
composition of the picture is showing a
chain of events from a person turning on
a posit, to the water leaving the posit
and impact with surface of the sink.
