• What is in the centre of the image? 
• The centre of the image is not the main focus; it’s simply the chests of two 
dominant band members. The real focus of the photo is at the top which is 
where the eyes are drawn to, rather than the centre. 
• What is on the periphery? 
• The outskirts of the photo is a plain and simple grey background, this may 
be to ensure there entire focus of the photo is on the band members and 
more specifically there facial features. 
• Has the photo been staged? 
• Yes, the photo has been staged; it has been taken in a studio and 
professionally managed. 
• What do you think happened directly before the image was taken? 
• I think that directly before the image was taken, the four band members 
were specifically positioned into that stance and aspects such as lighting 
and camera focus and angle were appropriately tweaked and checked. 
• What do you think happened directly after? 
• I think that directly after, they may have been positioned differently or 
another angle was used in order to take another shot.
• Is the entire photo equally in or out of focus? 
• The entire photo is in focus, all features are instantly 
recognisable. 
• Is the lighting bright, dim or shadowy? 
• The lighting is very clear and printed in black and 
white. The image is also shadowy which enhances 
features such as cheekbones and jaw lines. 
• Is there any obvious cropping? What do you think was 
left out? 
• I think that there is obvious cropping yes, the photo 
has been cropped to a suitable horizontal rectangle 
shape, cutting out from the waist down on all members 
and parts of an arm of the two members on the sides.
• What age, gender or ethnicity do they appear to be? 
• The four males appear to be around the age of 40 when this photo was 
taken and or white British ethnicity. 
• What can you tell about them from their dress or situation? 
• They were very current at the time of the photo, their hair and style was 
on trend and they stuck by their personal look at the same time. 
• Are they looking directly into the camera, inviting empathy or away, 
signifying distance? 
• They are looking directly into the camera which instantly connects with 
the viewer. Due to them being artists, this means they are inviting the 
audience to listen to their music and become a fan. 
• Is the photo taken at a high angle, making the viewer feel like they are 
looking down on the person or at a low angle, making the viewer feel like 
they’re looking up to/at the person? 
• The photo is not at a high or low angle, they’re looking straight ahead in 
order to connect with the audience on a personal level, not to intimidate 
or belittle. 
• What is their posture? Does the posture hint at other activities, feelings or 
situations that are not otherwise obvious in the photo? 
• Their posture is strong, pulled-up and together. This implies they are 
confident and at the top of their game.
• Why do you think this photo was taken? What is 
its purpose? 
• I think this photo was taken as part of a 
professional photo shoot which may have been 
for a magazine, billboard or any form of 
promotion. 
• Where could you see this picture appearing? 
• I could see this photo appearing anywhere where 
the band is being advertised, I think it would 
work in terms of being inviting, strong and 
professional. I could also see this photo as part of 
an interview, as it is very easy to connect with the 
picture due to eye contact.

  • 2. • What is in the centre of the image? • The centre of the image is not the main focus; it’s simply the chests of two dominant band members. The real focus of the photo is at the top which is where the eyes are drawn to, rather than the centre. • What is on the periphery? • The outskirts of the photo is a plain and simple grey background, this may be to ensure there entire focus of the photo is on the band members and more specifically there facial features. • Has the photo been staged? • Yes, the photo has been staged; it has been taken in a studio and professionally managed. • What do you think happened directly before the image was taken? • I think that directly before the image was taken, the four band members were specifically positioned into that stance and aspects such as lighting and camera focus and angle were appropriately tweaked and checked. • What do you think happened directly after? • I think that directly after, they may have been positioned differently or another angle was used in order to take another shot.
  • 3. • Is the entire photo equally in or out of focus? • The entire photo is in focus, all features are instantly recognisable. • Is the lighting bright, dim or shadowy? • The lighting is very clear and printed in black and white. The image is also shadowy which enhances features such as cheekbones and jaw lines. • Is there any obvious cropping? What do you think was left out? • I think that there is obvious cropping yes, the photo has been cropped to a suitable horizontal rectangle shape, cutting out from the waist down on all members and parts of an arm of the two members on the sides.
  • 4. • What age, gender or ethnicity do they appear to be? • The four males appear to be around the age of 40 when this photo was taken and or white British ethnicity. • What can you tell about them from their dress or situation? • They were very current at the time of the photo, their hair and style was on trend and they stuck by their personal look at the same time. • Are they looking directly into the camera, inviting empathy or away, signifying distance? • They are looking directly into the camera which instantly connects with the viewer. Due to them being artists, this means they are inviting the audience to listen to their music and become a fan. • Is the photo taken at a high angle, making the viewer feel like they are looking down on the person or at a low angle, making the viewer feel like they’re looking up to/at the person? • The photo is not at a high or low angle, they’re looking straight ahead in order to connect with the audience on a personal level, not to intimidate or belittle. • What is their posture? Does the posture hint at other activities, feelings or situations that are not otherwise obvious in the photo? • Their posture is strong, pulled-up and together. This implies they are confident and at the top of their game.

What is its purpose? • I think this photo was taken as part of a professional photo shoot which may have been for a magazine, billboard or any form of promotion. • Where could you see this picture appearing? • I could see this photo appearing anywhere where the band is being advertised, I think it would work in terms of being inviting, strong and professional. I could also see this photo as part of an interview, as it is very easy to connect with the picture due to eye contact.
