PHILOSOPHYOF EDUCATION
The purposeof education today
I believethatthe purpose of educationtodayistoencourage youngpeople tobetterthemselves
and to make a differenceinoursociety.Itisour jobsas teachersto be an inspiration, avoice,a
confidant, aprotectorand overall amentor for our students. We mustrecognize thatwe are one of the
fewadultsina child’slife thathasa biginfluence (Burden&Byrd,2013).
The contentand skills that should betaughtin school
The 21st
centuryskillsare vital forall studentstohave. These skillsinclude criticalthinkingand
problemsolving,creativityandinnovation,communicationandcollaboration,andcross-disciplinary
thinkingaswell asvisual,scientificandnumerical,basic,information,communicationsandtechnology,
civic,and environmentalliteracy.Childrenneedtobe taughtinitiativeandself-directionandsocial and
cross-cultural skills.Andfinally,childrenshouldbe taughthow tobe leadersandacceptresponsibility
(Institute of MuseumandLibraryServices).
The best approach to ensurestudentlearning
Studentsshouldlearn toarrive athisor herversionof the truth. Young childrenlearn by
interactingwithotherstudents,adultsandthe physical worldandshouldthereforelearnbydiscussion
withtheirpeersandteacherandbe givenhands-onmaterialstocreate comprehensionandmeaning.
(Snowden&McCown,2012, p.329). Studentsshouldnotsimplymirrorandreflectwhattheyhave read
or have beentold, but withguidedinstruction be active learnersandquestionthe worldaround them.
Thenthe responsibilityof learningisgraduallyplacedmore heavilyuponthe student. Student
engagementcanbe achievedbyprovidingmultiplemeansof representationof material,multiple means
of expression,andmultiplemeansof waysforstudentstoengage andrecruitinterestaswell as
providingrelevance tothe material (National Centerof Universal DesignforLearning).Thiswouldbe

done byincorporatingvisual,kinestheticandauditorymeansof representationinlessonslike hands-on
activitiesandpicturesaswell asofferingmultiple meansof assessmenttoencourage interestsuchas
papers, presentationsora project.
The role of a teacher
The role of a teacheris toprovide substantial backgroundknowledgeof academicsandto
encourage essential values.A teachershouldprovide asafe andwarmlearningenvironment. They
shouldbe a confidantandsomeone thattheirstudentstrustandrespect. Ithinkit’simportantfor
teachersto take an interestintheirstudents’lives. Iwill make itapointtocreate a relationshipwith
each studentsothat theyfeel likeanimportantpartof the classroom.
The role of a student
The role of a studentisto take an active role intheirlearning. Studentsshouldbe encouragedto
continue todeveloptheirlearningafterschool andoutside of school, torespecttheirpeers andmentors
and to take pride intheirwork.
Howshould learning be measure?
Students’ growthshouldbe measuredthroughoutthe yearwith performance assessmentsand
portfoliosof theirwork (Snowden&McCown,2012, p.496). Thiswouldinclude writingsamples,videos
of presentations, andotherprojects.Testinghasitsplace toobtainsnapshotsof the knowledge thata
studenthasaccumulated.Testingisnotthe be all endall, but itcan give insightintothe specificskills
that a studentmaybe missing.Studentperformance andcomprehensionshouldbe assessedonthe
dailyat the endof eachlessonaswell.Thiscanbe done simplybyclosingeachlessonwithareviewand
informal assessment (Burden&Byrd,2013, p.106).
