Our Lady of Peace Quasi-Parish/ Mary Queen of Peace Shrine
Our Lady of EDSA
The Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of Edsa, The Edsa Shrine is a small church of
the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila located at the intersection of Ortigas Avenue and
Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Barangay Ugong Norte, Quezon City. The shrine is
also called the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace or Mary, Queen of Peace Quasi-
Parish, although these names are seldom used. Built in 1989 originally to commemorate the
memories of the People Power Revolution and its peaceful outcome, the shrine stands on the
site of two peaceful demonstrations that toppled Philippine presidents Ferdinand Marcos (the
People Power Revolution or EDSA I) and Joseph Estrada (The EDSA Revolution of 2001 or
EDSA II).
Our Lady of Peace, Mother of Peace, Queen of Peace or Our Lady Queen of Peace is a title of
the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic Church. She is represented in art holding a dove
and an olive branch, symbols of peace. Her official memorial feast is celebrated on January 24
each year in Hawaii and some churches in the United States. Elsewhere, the memorial feast is
celebrated on July 9.
Bonifacio Monument
Andres Bonifacio Monument is a mural commemorate to the lifework of Gat. Andres Bonifacio. It
was created by Guillermo E. Tolentino, one of the National Artists of the Philippines. The
construction of national monument for Andres Bonifacio was led by former Katipuneros,
particularly Bonifacio’s friend and comrade, Guillermo Masangkay. On February 23, 1918, Act
No. 2760 was passed by the Philippine Legislature approving the erection of a national
monument in memory of Andres Bonifacio. Eight years later, on 29 August 1930, a jury created
to select the best design for a monument to honor the Great Plebeian convened. It was headed
by Architect Andres Luna de San Pedro and was composed of sculptor Vicente Francisco and
Architect Tomas Mapua. Painter and Director of the UP College of Fine Arts Fabian dela Rosa
was supposed to preside in the deliberation but later declined to ensure fairness when he
learned that one of his colleagues from his college was one of the competitors.
The chosen design was National Artist Guillermo Tolentino's design which consists of a 45-foot
pylon topped by the winged figure of victory. At its base is a platform-like structure with figures
symbolized the Philippine Revolution. The pylon is composed of five parts which correspond to
the five aspects of the Katipunan-Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan (KKK). The monument stands on a base in the shape of an octagon whose eight sides
symbolize the first eight provinces placed under martial law for revolting against Spain and the
eight rays in the Philippine flag. There are three steps leading to the monument, representing
the three centuries of Spanish rule.
Before the 1930s, there was no monument impressive enough to honor the Great Plebeian, as
Bonifacio was called. Though Bonifacio had been long recognized as one of the greatest heroes
of the Philippines, it was only in 1921 when he was given formal recognition. On February 9 of
that year, the Philippine legislature enacted Act No. 2946 proclaiming November 30 of each
year as Araw ni Bonifacio (Bonifacio Day) and observing it as a national holiday.
Oblation
No symbol is more closely identified with the University of the Philippines than the statue of the
Oblation. The naked figure of a young man in a symbolic gesture of sacrificial offering of service
to country and humanity has become a landmark in every campus of the University. For the
hundreds of thousands of UP Alumni, the Oblation has become their major symbolic link with
Alma Mater. The Oblation is also the major rallying point for all kinds of dissent, protest actions,
and social criticism, as well as expressions of public service, nationalism, and patriotism. For
the autonomous units and all the campuses of the University of the Philippines, the Oblation is
the enduring symbol of their unity in mission, vision and traditions.
The Oblation, a masterpiece of Filipino sculptor Guillermo E. Tolentino, was commissioned in
1935 by President Rafael Palma, first Filipino president of the University. His order was for
professor Tolentino to translate the second stanza of Rizal's "Last Farewell" into a monument
which would be the identifying landmark of the University.
The idea for the Oblation was first conceived during the presidency of Rafael Palma, who was
the one to commission Tolentino to make the sculpture. Palma requested that the statue would
be based on the second verse of Rizal's Mi Ultimo Adios;
“In fields of battle, deliriously fighting,
Others give you their lives, without doubt, without regret;
Where there’s cypress, laurel or lily,
On a plank or open field, in combat or cruel martyrdom,
If the home or country asks, it's all the same--it matters not. ”
The concrete sculpture painted to look like bronze, measures 3.5 meters in height, symbolizing
the 333 years of Spanish rule in the Philippines. The sculpture is replete with references of
selfless dedication and service to the nation, and as Tolentino himself describes it.
Oblation Run
The Oblation Run at University of the Philippines Diliman is an annual tradition inspired by the
Oblation, done by the members of the Alpha Phi Omega, one of the prominent and influential
U.P. fraternities. Members of the fraternity run around the campus naked (a concept known as
streaking) to protest their sentiments about a current political or economic situation.

  • 1. Our Lady of Peace Quasi-Parish/ Mary Queen of Peace Shrine Our Lady of EDSA The Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of Edsa, The Edsa Shrine is a small church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila located at the intersection of Ortigas Avenue and Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Barangay Ugong Norte, Quezon City. The shrine is also called the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace or Mary, Queen of Peace Quasi- Parish, although these names are seldom used. Built in 1989 originally to commemorate the memories of the People Power Revolution and its peaceful outcome, the shrine stands on the site of two peaceful demonstrations that toppled Philippine presidents Ferdinand Marcos (the People Power Revolution or EDSA I) and Joseph Estrada (The EDSA Revolution of 2001 or EDSA II). Our Lady of Peace, Mother of Peace, Queen of Peace or Our Lady Queen of Peace is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic Church. She is represented in art holding a dove and an olive branch, symbols of peace. Her official memorial feast is celebrated on January 24 each year in Hawaii and some churches in the United States. Elsewhere, the memorial feast is celebrated on July 9.

Eight years later, on 29 August 1930, a jury created to select the best design for a monument to honor the Great Plebeian convened. It was headed by Architect Andres Luna de San Pedro and was composed of sculptor Vicente Francisco and Architect Tomas Mapua. Painter and Director of the UP College of Fine Arts Fabian dela Rosa was supposed to preside in the deliberation but later declined to ensure fairness when he learned that one of his colleagues from his college was one of the competitors. The chosen design was National Artist Guillermo Tolentino's design which consists of a 45-foot pylon topped by the winged figure of victory. At its base is a platform-like structure with figures symbolized the Philippine Revolution. The pylon is composed of five parts which correspond to the five aspects of the Katipunan-Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK). The monument stands on a base in the shape of an octagon whose eight sides symbolize the first eight provinces placed under martial law for revolting against Spain and the eight rays in the Philippine flag. There are three steps leading to the monument, representing the three centuries of Spanish rule. Before the 1930s, there was no monument impressive enough to honor the Great Plebeian, as Bonifacio was called. Though Bonifacio had been long recognized as one of the greatest heroes of the Philippines, it was only in 1921 when he was given formal recognition. On February 9 of that year, the Philippine legislature enacted Act No. 2946 proclaiming November 30 of each year as Araw ni Bonifacio (Bonifacio Day) and observing it as a national holiday.
  • 3. Oblation No symbol is more closely identified with the University of the Philippines than the statue of the Oblation. The naked figure of a young man in a symbolic gesture of sacrificial offering of service to country and humanity has become a landmark in every campus of the University. For the hundreds of thousands of UP Alumni, the Oblation has become their major symbolic link with Alma Mater. The Oblation is also the major rallying point for all kinds of dissent, protest actions, and social criticism, as well as expressions of public service, nationalism, and patriotism. For the autonomous units and all the campuses of the University of the Philippines, the Oblation is the enduring symbol of their unity in mission, vision and traditions. The Oblation, a masterpiece of Filipino sculptor Guillermo E. Tolentino, was commissioned in 1935 by President Rafael Palma, first Filipino president of the University. His order was for professor Tolentino to translate the second stanza of Rizal's "Last Farewell" into a monument which would be the identifying landmark of the University. The idea for the Oblation was first conceived during the presidency of Rafael Palma, who was the one to commission Tolentino to make the sculpture. Palma requested that the statue would be based on the second verse of Rizal's Mi Ultimo Adios;

The sculpture is replete with references of selfless dedication and service to the nation, and as Tolentino himself describes it. Oblation Run The Oblation Run at University of the Philippines Diliman is an annual tradition inspired by the Oblation, done by the members of the Alpha Phi Omega, one of the prominent and influential U.P. fraternities. Members of the fraternity run around the campus naked (a concept known as streaking) to protest their sentiments about a current political or economic situation.
