1. SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
University of the Philippines Manila
SCIENCE AND SCOPE
2. Derived from the Greek word 'pharmakos' meaning
poison (Classic Greek) or drug (Modern Greek).
Science of studying the effects of drugs on living
organisms.
It attempts to describe the biological responses
produced by drugs and define the underlying
mechanisms by which the responses are generated.
PHARMACOLOGY
3. Study of substances that interact with living systems
through chemical processes , especially by binding to
regulatory molecules and activating or inhibiting
normal body processes.

4. Derived from the French word 'drogue' referring to a
dry substance and probably reflects the use of herbs in
early therapy.
Any chemical which is utilized for the diagnosis,
prevention, cure or amelioration of an unwanted

verification, standardization, compounding and
dispensing of drugs and dosage forms of drugs for
medical uses.
Place where drugs are stored and dispensed
PHARMACY
7. Study of the absorption, distribution,
biotransformation and excretion of drugs.
The actions of the body to the drug

Scope
8. Study of the mechanism of drug action and the
relationships between drug concentration and
responses in the body.
The actions of the drug on the body

effects on the human body
PHARMACOGNOSY
Scope
10. Branch of pharmacology that examines the role of
genetics on drug response.
Deals with the hereditary influences on an individual’s
response to a drug
