Cognitive Database: An Apache Spark-Based AI-Enabled Relational Database Syst...
We describe design and implementation of Cognitive Database, a Spark-based relational database that demonstrates novel capabilities of AI-enabled SQL queries. A key aspect of our approach is to first view the structured data source as meaningful unstructured text, and then use the text to build an unsupervised neural network model using a Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique called word embedding. We seamlessly integrate the word embedding model into existing SQL query infrastructure and use it to enable a new class of SQL-based analytics queries called cognitive intelligence (CI) queries.
CI queries use the model vectors to enable complex queries such as semantic matching, inductive reasoning queries such as analogies/semantic clustering, predictive queries using entities not present in a database, and, more generally, using knowledge from external sources. We demonstrate unique capabilities of Cognitive Databases using an Apache Spark 2.2.0 based prototype to execute inductive reasoning CI queries over a multi-modal relational database containing text and images from the ImageNet dataset. We illustrate key aspects of the Spark-based implementation, e.g., UDF implementations of various cognitive functions using Spark SQL, Python (via Jupyter notebook) and Scala based interfaces, Distributed Spark implementation, and integration of GPU-enabled nearest neighbor kernels.

Multi-Model DataBases (MMDBs) have emerged as a promising approach for dealing with this task as they are capable of accommodating and querying the multi-model data in a single system. This tutorial aims to offer a comprehensive presentation of a wide range of query languages for MMDBs and to make comparisons of their properties from multiple perspectives. We will discuss the essence of cross-model query processing and provide insights on the research challenges and directions for future work. The tutorial will also offer the participants hands-on experience in applying MMDBs to issue multi-model data queries.

Employees were extremely frustrated at Gloria and felt as though the university was giving her special treatment.
Gloria felt the frustration immediately when returning to work, despite the fact that the university had indicated that it supported mothers on parental leave and mothers who needed extra time to pump breast milk after maternity leave. She felt disrespected by her co-workers due to her cultural beliefs about the importance of breast feeding. The discomfort she felt affected her work, and she began to fall further behind in her daily responsibilities. Soon, she dreaded going to work, cried often, and felt unappreciated by her supervisor. She also felt her supervisor did not approve of her decision to take 12 weeks off after her infant was born and she didn’t approve of her frequent breaks. Gloria often overheard other employees making jokes about her. Gloria has worked for the company for 6 years and does not want to quit. She decides to visit Human Resources for assistance.
