2. INTRODUCTION
Oil & Gas sector is among the six core industries in India
& plays a major role in influencing decisions making for
all other important sections of economy.
Indian Petroleum industry started its journey during the
fiscal year 1890 in the north eastern provinces of India.
The production of petroleum along with exploration of
new sites was primarily restricted upto the 1970s.
But the scenario changed drastically with the introduction
of Bombay High.

3. Market size
 India is expected to be one of the largest contributors to non-
OECD petroleum consumption growth globally.
 Total oil imports rose 4.24 per cent year-on-year to US$ 86.45
billion in April-March 2016-17.
 India is the fourth-largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
importer after Japan, South Korea and China.
 The demand of Petroleum Oil and Lubricants grew at a
Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.6 per cent under
the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17).
 ONGC accounted for 57 percent of the country’s domestic
crude oil production in 2016-17.

9. Threats to Petroleum Industry
Geopolitical risks can push up oil prices, increase india’s
oil bill and thus affect its business severly.
Subsidy burden, which it faces due to GOI policies , can
adversly impact its cash flow.
A highly competitive market, with numerous private
players can erode its market shares.
The global economic scenario and economic volatility
can result in sudden fluctuations in demand/price of oil
thereby harming company’s interest.

10. Govt. Initiatives
The Govt. Of India plans to build 9MT refinary in
Rajasthan as well as 6MT in Maharashtra.
 The Govt. plans to merge state oil comp. to create
integrated market that compete globally.
