Large dams have historically been built in areas with fewer fatal landslides, but dam construction is increasingly occurring in high-risk mountainous regions. Between 2003-2012, 37 landslides associated with major dam projects killed over 500 people in Asia. Most dam-related landslides have occurred during construction and involved rockfalls or landslides into workers' camps. The number of fatalities from such landslides has been increasing as more dams are built in high-risk earthquake and landslide zones in the Himalayas and China.
