building online exhibitions around user-generated content
What is user-generated content (UGC)? Any uncommissioned creative submission from a general or specialist audience member Why undertake a project based on UGC? Because… it’s an excellent way to get engagement from your audience It makes for a rich web experience You can be surprised by the quality and diversity of the submissions
Thematic Projects Based around a topic, special interest or a brief My Peak Experience Site for the Peak District National Park. Visitors upload photos, videos, stories and comments about their favourite places in the Peak District
Open exhibition or competition A call for submissions, backed by a prize or opportunity to exhibit Outside In An open exhibition at Pallant House Gallery Chichester that focuses on “outsider” art and marginalised artists
Technical structure
Handling submissions Upload form Users submit entries via a well labeled interface Monitoring Organisers have a “control panel” where they can monitor submissions
Automating the selection process Criteria Selection criteria is set before judging takes place. Each point is weighted. Rating A specialised interface allows judges to rate each submission against the criteria
From selection to show Ranking The submissions are shown, ranked by their scores. Adjustments can be made. Display The work is shown in an online gallery and the top 150 pieces are shown at Pallant House Gallery
Outcomes Submissions went from approx. 200 to nearly 800 A wider range of people submitted, there was more engagement from community groups Curators spent far less time selecting than anticipated All agreed that process was more rigorous and fairer
