PESTEL analysis For the past 5 months, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been in political turmoil, following the death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish girl who died in custody of the morality police of the Islamic Republic. While the official government position is that her death was not due to any wrongdoing on part of the authorities, the opposition counts numerous incidents of the past 44 years that indicate Mahsas death was another case in point. Opposition claims her death was the result of a brain haemorrhage caused by torture and violence of morality police. This incident has given rise to riots and violent protests by other social strata of Iranians who no longer want the Islamic Republic as a ruling political system in Iran. The alternative is a secular democracy based on human rights and Irans territorial integrity put forth by the opposition outside Iran, e.g. in Canada, US, Europe and Australia. The opposition is a loose alliance of monarchists, secular republicans, leftists, and religious minorities including Islamic groups who are secular. Canada and Iran have had turbulent relationships which diplomatically finished following the murder in custody of the Canadian-Iranian photo journalist, Zahra Kazemi in 2003. However, there have been other incidents of death in Iranian custody of Iranian-Canadians which have further severed the relationships between Tehran and Ottawa. Since mid-February 2023, the Iranian opposition abroad has gained momentum as the exiled Iranian Prince whose father was overthrown by revolutionary forces in 1979 has become more vocal against the Islamic Republic. He is supported by other activities outside Iran such as journalists and Iranian celebrities. As such, prominent Iranian dissident figures, like the exiled prince Reza Pahlavi himself, women rights activist Masih Alinejad, and activist Nazanin Boniadi were invited to renowned Munich Security Conference (MSC) in February 2023 instead of the official government. There have been other incidents were the opposition has been approached and welcomed by Western parliaments and governments instead of the officials of the Islamic Republic. This is the first time this is happening since 1979 revolution which brough the Islamic Republic to power in Iran.
