- MS-DOS was created by Microsoft in response to a project from IBM and became the standard PC operating system in the early 1980s.
- Windows 1.0 was released in 1985 and introduced a graphical user interface and mouse support to PCs, moving away from command lines.
- Windows 3.0 was a major success when released in 1990, selling over 10 million copies in its first two years and establishing Windows as a mainstream operating system.
Microsoft Windows has evolved over 35 years through 9 major versions. It was first released in 1985 and was developed to provide a graphical user interface and run on top of the MS-DOS operating system. Key early versions included Windows 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 which introduced overlapping windows, minimizing, and maximizing capabilities. Later major versions included Windows 95 which moved to a 32-bit architecture and introduced the Start button and taskbar, Windows XP which had a redesigned interface and was the longest running OS, Windows 7 which introduced Wi-Fi support, and Windows 10 which featured the new Start menu and introduced Cortana as a personal assistant.
Bill Gates is an American businessman and philanthropist who co-founded Microsoft, the world's largest personal computer software company. As the chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Gates led the company to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the 1980s and Windows in the 1990s. He stepped down as CEO in 2000 and as chairman of Microsoft in 2014. Gates is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest overall from 1995 to 2009. He has donated billions to charity through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which works to save lives and improve global health.
1) Microsoft released its first operating system called MS-DOS in 1981 in response to a request from IBM for an operating system to run on IBM's new personal computer.
2) In 1985, Microsoft released Windows 1.0, introducing a graphical user interface and allowing users to run multiple programs at once using windows, icons, menus and a pointing device.
3) Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Microsoft continued improving Windows with new versions that took advantage of advancing computer hardware and added more features like drop-down menus and color graphics. By the mid-1990s Windows was widely used at work and home.
The history of Linux operating system began in 1991 when Linus Torvalds started working on an operating system kernel. He was dissatisfied with MINIX and wanted to create his own operating system with more functionality. Over time, his operating system kernel grew in functionality and was renamed Linux. Linux benefits from open source GNU software and is often referred to as GNU/Linux. Since its creation, Linux has expanded in popularity and is now used widely in servers, embedded devices, and more.

Hand Rolled Applicative User ValidationCode KataPhilip Schwarz
Could you use a simple piece of Scala validation code (granted, a very simplistic one too!) that you can rewrite, now and again, to refresh your basic understanding of Applicative operators <*>, <*, *>?
The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.

Microservice Teams - How the cloud changes the way we workSven Peters
A lot of technical challenges and complexity come with building a cloud-native and distributed architecture. The way we develop backend software has fundamentally changed in the last ten years. Managing a microservices architecture demands a lot of us to ensure observability and operational resiliency. But did you also change the way you run your development teams?
Sven will talk about Atlassian’s journey from a monolith to a multi-tenanted architecture and how it affected the way the engineering teams work. You will learn how we shifted to service ownership, moved to more autonomous teams (and its challenges), and established platform and enablement teams.
Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

4. What is Windows?
The most important piece of
software on any computer is
the operating system. The
operating system gives the
framework upon which all
other services and applications
run. The majority of home
users use a Windows based
machine.
Most of today’s applications
and games are designed to
run solely on Microsoft
systems.
6. History
Bill Gates and Paul Allen, see that personal computi
ng is a path to the future.
In 1975, Gates and Allen form a partnership called
Microsoft.
Microsoft focuses on a new operating system—the soft
ware that manages, or runs, the computer hardware an
d also serves to bridge the gap between the computer
hardware and programs, such as a word processor. The
y name their new operating system "MS-DOS."
8. Microsoft Disk operating system, MS-DOS is a non-graphical comma
nd line operating system.
Written by Tim Paterson and introduced by Microsoft in August 1
981 .
A text-based OS, MS-DOS often had programs using
a mouse and graphics to make work more simple and quick.
It is called a disk operating system because it was originally made to
be loaded into a computer's memory with a floppy disk each time the
computer is started (booted) up.
MS-DOS was effective, but also proves difficult to understand for many p
eople.

10. 1982–1985:
Introducing Windows 1.0
• Interface Manager is the code name and is considered as the final name,
Rather than typing MS-DOS commands, you just move a mouse to point and clic
k your way through screens, or “windows.
There are drop-down menus, scroll bars, icons, and dialog boxes that make progr
ams easier to learn and use.
You're able to switch among several programs without having to quit and restart each
one. Windows 1.0 ships with several programs, including MS-DOS file manageme
nt, Paint, Windows Writer, Notepad, Calculator, and a calendar, card file, and cl
ock to help you manage day-to-day activities. There’s even a game—Reversi.
Windows 1.0 requires a minimum of 256 kilobytes (KB), two double- sided floppy di
sk drives, and a graphics adapter card.

32. Windows Mobile Operating System
Windows Mobile was a family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft for smartphones and pe
rsonal digital assistants.[1]
Its origin dated back to Windows CE in 1996, though Windows Mobile itself first appeared in 2000 as Pocket
PC 2000 which ran on Pocket PC PDAs. It was renamed "Windows Mobile" in 2003, at which point it came in
several versions (similar to the desktop versions of Windows) and was aimed at business and enterprise con
sumers. When initially released in the mid-2000s, it was to be the portable equivalent of what Windows des
ktop OS was: a major force in the then-emerging mobile/portable areas.
Following the rise of newer smartphone OSs (iOS and Android) Windows Mobile never equalled the success
and faded rapidly in the following years. By February 2010, Microsoft announced the more modern and cons
umer-focused Windows Phone to supersede Windows Mobile. As a result, Windows Mobile has been deprec
ated since existing devices and software are incompatible with Windows Phone.[2][3][4] The last version of
Windows Mobile, released after the announcement of Windows Phone, was 6.5.5. After this, Microsoft ceas
ed development on Windows Mobile in order to concentrate on Windows Phone.
Microsoft released a similarly-named Windows 10 Mobile in 2015 which was part of the Windows Phone ser
ies, and it is unrelated to the former Windows Mobile operating systems.
