Researchers in Sweden successfully recellularized decellularized human blood vessels with autologous whole peripheral blood. They then used the recellularized vessels for bypass procedures in two patients with portal vein thrombosis. The work demonstrates that personalized blood vessels can be generated using a simple blood sample from the patient. The researchers were able to repopulate decellularized allogeneic vascular scaffolds with peripheral whole blood in vitro in a bioreactor. Circulating cells contributed to repopulation of the grafts. Scanning electron micrographs showed cells with a flat morphology consistent with endothelial cells on the luminal surface.
