CHIROPRACTIC SCIENCE-REVIEW

 INTRODUCTION
 The Chiropractor takes the disordered mechanism of the man,
and, by properly adjusting the deranged parts, allows impulses
to perform their main natural functions(Sutherland,1939). The
medical man clogs its machinery with mysterious mixtures and
finally turns it over to the surgeons to complete the work of
destruction. Researchers in this field believe that disease is the
result of anatomical abnormalities (bones slightly displaced by
mainly various accidents) which cause physiological discord
and the abnormal functions. Therefore, to return to health,
free the body of pain and distress, chiropractors replace the
displaced parts of the nerve machine in their proper
position(Upledger et al.,1983).
 Historical—The first accidental crude Chiropractic adjustment of the vertebra was
given in September, 1895, by Dr. D. D. Palmer. Neither the art nor the science or
scientific proofs was formed at this time. Its growth remained practically dormant
till 1903, since that time his son, B. J. Palmer, D. C., Ph.C., has developed it into a
well definedand delineated non-therapeutical philosophy, science and art that has
no resemblance with whatever to any recent therapeutical method(DeJarnette
M,1973). Health (equality) is restored by completing the mental and physical
circuit; restoring the currents of the cycles of mental impulses acting through the
material agency; to replace the full quota of the positive with an equivalent
negative; permitting the reconveyance of the intelligent immateriality into the
mechanical corporeals; to reconstruct the normal psycho-physical unit; to make as
one the trinity of creations, transmission and expression(Meeker WC,1992); to re-
establish mainly an equilibrium between the abstract and concrete, all of which is
induced by replacing the specific disordered concrete mechanical anatomy which
permits adjustment between that one law of the two principles—cause and effect
—the rules and manner of declaration of which are unique and unlike any theories
of simulative or inhibitive movements or applications availed by any other
school(Lantz,1988).
 Defined—Chiropractic is a name given to the study and application of
the universal philosophy of biology, theology, theosophy, health,
disease, death, the science of the cause of diseases and art of
permitting the restoration of the triune relationships between all the
attributes necessary to normal composite forms, to harmonious
quantities and qualities by placing in the juxtaposition the abnormal
concrete positions of definite mechanical portions with each other, by
hands, thus correcting all subluxations of the specific three hundred
articulations of the human skeletal frame, more especially those of
the spinal columns(Rahlmann,1987), for the purpose of permitting the
recreation of all normal cyclic currents through the nerves that were
formerly not permitted to be transmitted, through impingement, but
have now assumed their normal sizes and capacity for, conduction as
they emanate through the intervertebral foramina—the expressions
of which were formerly excessive or partially lacking—named diseases
 . All movements, whether normal or abnormal of, or in the body
(encompassing blood circulation), are but the personification of
mental equivalents—the mental functions guided by Innate
Intelligence, creating physical expression. All ache or the pain is
but the intellectual interpretation placed upon impressions
received from the periphery concerning the abnormal physical
states(Lewit,1985). Walking on the back, using a towel around the
chest as a tourniquet, a mallet and the stick to drive the projecting
vertebrae in line, general and local traction, screwing down the
stubborn seventh cervical vertebra with the anatomical adjuster, is
not mainly hand adjusting, is not Chiropractic(Ebner JA,1994).

 CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS
 Specific spinal adjustments or the spinal corrections are the speciality of
Chiropractors. The term ‘Chiropractic adjustments’ refers to the specific
manipulation Chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal
movement patterns or fail to mainly function properly, otherwise known as a
subluxations(Janda V,1991). A gentle force is introduced onto the spine
intended to releases a vertebral segment from its abnormal motion and/or
position, thereby reducing the vertebral subluxation or the spinal
misalignment. There are more than 20 adjusting systems utilised in
Chiropractic today. Each system has a specific adjusting the procedure to
restore the spine to normal function. This reduces the negative neurologic
impacts, and returns the body to more normal efficiency. The Spinal
adjustments, regardless of which system is utilised, are tailored to the
patient’s age and spinal conditions. Chiropractic analysis utilises x-ray
examinations for visual assessment of the subluxated spine, to detect any
possible contraindications to spinal adjustments, and to the rule out bone
disease or spinal pathologies.
 This clinic avails state-of-the-art noninvasive testing called an Surface
Electromyographic Analysis (or SEMG). As nerve control the muscles of the spine, the
SEMG will measure how well the motor nerves are working by assessing and reading
the amount of current found in the muscles. This technology will objectively aid to
detect areas or nerve disturbance, muscle imbalance and postural disturbance and
will aid to document and monitor your results(Liebenson C,1989).
 SAFETY
 Chiropractic is the largest non-surgical, the non-drug prescribing primary contact
health profession in the world. Chiropractic avoids drugs and the invasive procedures
and has an excellent safety record(Bogduk N et al.,1991). In relation to the treatment
of neck and back pain, studies and researches have shown that a course of
chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs.
Although the chiropractic care has an excellent safety record, no health treatments is
completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic,
however, are extremely small. Chiropractic is much safe and may assist in a wide range
of conditions such as: • During Pregnancy • Osteoporosis • Cancer • Rheumatoid
arthritis • Psoriatic arthritis • Disc injuries • The Whiplash injuries • Spinal
fractures(Beal MC,1985).
