Personal Statement
My passionandobsessionwithfilmandthe mediaingeneral hasbecome agrowingthing
throughoutmychildhood.Itwasn’tuntil acouple of yearsago when I noticedthatmediahashad
playedabig part inhowI viewedthe world,the lessonsIlearnedfromwatchingit andhow I grewas
a personto where Iam now,It was thenwhere Ibeganto considerthisasa carrierseeinghow it’s
onlytopicthat I feel Iam fullypassionateaboutandone I can’tstop talkingaboutinmy personal
life. Animatedfilmsfromthe likesof PixarandDisney(FindingNemo,Incrediblesetc) Bothfilms
dealtwithreallypersonal themesmainlytodowithfamilyissuesandgrief,andseeingthese
emotionsanddowntoearth topicspresentedinananimatedformatwasa verynuancedexperience
for me and one that resonateswithme more whenIre-watchboththese filmsaswell asmany
others.Some of the earliestfilmsIwatchedinthe cinema,andfora couple of yearswhere animated
films.These wouldbe the films thatIwouldbe the onesI see the mostsimplybecause theywere
more accessible tothe likesof someone like me,howeverinrecentyearsmygrowingmaturityhas
ledto me balancingthatout withmore live actionfilmsthatare way grittier.Ispendmy spare time
seeingnewreleasesaswell asoldsimplybecause seeingitanddiscussingitmakesme happy. Ihave
had a lotof funediting,filmingandputtingprojectstogether butIhave especiallyreallyenjoyed
have learningaboutthe differentstagesand the innerworkingsof afilmhoweverrecentlyIfeelI’ve
gottena lotout of analysingmediathenmakingit. It’snotthat I am not at all interestedindoingit
but I feel thatImightbe betterthanone thingthan the other.I mightwantto geta jobwriting
aboutfilmsandothermediaas a secondcarrieroptionif I evercome to the conclusionthatmaking
mediaisn’treallymycallinginlife.Bothmakingmediaandwritingaboutmediaare mymaincarrier
aspirationsinlife asaresulton howmedia(mainlyfilm) hasplayedabigpartduringchildhoodand
helpedme growasa humanbeing.
As I have gottenolderandthe more my love formediahasgottenstrongeras well asmysocial skills
I have founditeasiertonot onlycommunicate withpeople better (whichwill helpwheneverIam
workingwithateam of youngfilmmakers) Ihave pickeduponthe manydifferentaspectsonwhatit
takesto put a filmtogether(eg,cinematography,music,scenecontinuity,editing,)andwhetheror
not eitherof these aspectsare done well.Thismakesiteasierforme totalk abouta filmor a piece
of mediamore indepthweatherornotif I am watchinganepisode of aTV show or seeinganew
release,Icanfindthe right wordsto discussa filmandwrite aboutit. My growingdevelopmentin
social skill alsoallowsme topickupnewinformationif eversomeone wantsme todosomething
behindthe cameraor someone isinstructingme todosomething.Evenif it’saskill thatImightnot
be verygood at firstI feel Iam verygoodat adaptingand learningandthusI can get betterata
certainskill.A goodexample Icanthink of is editingusingeditingsoftwhere suchasadobe
premiere.Itwasverytrickyto getthe hang of the manydifferent featuresandhow todo everything
right.But nowI am more confidentineditingfootagetogetherandnow ithas givenme the
opportunitytobe creative wheneverI’meditingprojects.I’malsoveryresourceful andcreative
wheneverIam workingbehindacameraand tryingto getthe rightshotas well asmakingsure that
a shot isusable inpostand make sure the image isn’toverexposed. Ialsohave some basic
knowledge onphotographyandownaDSLR at home.It usedto be a little hobbyof mine andwhile I
have grownout of it I’mstill aware on some of the basic tricksof the cameraas well the manystyles
and techniquesintosettingupashot.
Recentlywe have beenworkingonthisprogramcalledaftereffectswhichiswhere youcanedit
graphicsand otherimagesintoyourfootage andeven make still imagesmove subtly.It’savery
complex programandone that is goingtotake me a while tofigure outhow to fullyoperate it
correctly,The footage I have editedarounditIfeel showssome of mystrengthsinediting.I
attemptedtodo a still frame shotwhere astudentcard wouldfall outof a pocketafterbumpinginto
someone. The camerawouldmove aroundthe 2 people whilstthe cardwouldfloatinthe air.All
tryingto create the illusionof the image beingcompletelystillwithnomovement.UnfortunatelyI
had complicationsontryingtogetthisto workhoweverthe scenesbefore thisshowsashotreverse
shotscene whichI directedandeditedmyself.Ifeel thispartshowspotentialinme tocreate
somethingthat’s competent.WhileIhadtrouble withthe card I wasable to create a popup phone
message inthe same scene thathas beena recurringtrope inrecentmedia.Ifeel if the studentcard
was done correctlyIfeel thiswouldhave beenperfect.Ihave alsobeenutilisingcolourgrading more
inmy latesteffortwhichIfeel createsadoomand gloomatmosphere. Iamplanningtouse this
more oftenwhenImake my shortfilmandwork on the manydifferent aspectsatmydisposal.
Recently Iwasassignedtomake a studenttraileralongwitha groupof classmates usingnotesgiven
to us byour tutor on the structure but we are alsogiventhe freedomtodowhatwe wantedand
howthe trailershouldlookinpost.I usedthisas an opportunityto be creative withthe cameraand
utilize the manydifferentcameratricksyousee infilmandTV and I feel the blackandwhite atheistic
that I createdinpost givesoff averyeerie atmosphere. We were alsorequestedtouse aftereffects
to add ina sky to give off anapocalypticlookwithinthe environmentof the video andwhile Ihad
trouble tryingtoblendboththe backgroundandthe imagesIfeel the blackandwhite makesitlook
more and more seamless.

As forwhat I hope togain bygoingto University,Inotonlyhope to developmyfilmmakingskillsand
findoutwhichlevel of the filmmakingprocessIammostgood at,( egCinematography,editingetc)
but I alsowantto get a feelingof maturity outof it.Where I’mnow mature enoughto lookafter
myself andprovide formyselfandnothavingto relyonmy parentslookingafterme from home.I
feel goingtoUniversityisgoingtohelpme developboththese skillsbecause Iwill be gettingtothe
nittygrittyon whatit takesto workon a filmandTV productionandworkingonchallengingprojects,
while alsolivingawayfromhome andlivinginastudentaccommodationwhere Iwill meetnew
people andmeetnewfriends,somethingthatIfeel I’mnotthat goodat butsomethingthatgoingto
Universitywillimprove.Livingawayfromhome isgoingto give me a freshnew startin livingonmy
ownlike anadultand acting myage. Asfor developingfilmmakingskillsIfeel noone shouldever
aspire to be justa director,In myopinionthere isalwaysgoingtobe one aspectof filmmakingthata
filmstudentisgoingtobe good at and studyingfilmandTV productionwill alsohelpme discover
whicharea onfilmwill suitme most. Workingwithmore complicatedequipmentthatacollege
doesn’tprovide will furtherdevelopmyproductionskillsandexperiencingaprofessional
environmentwillgive me aperfectheadsupof the atmosphere of a filmproductionwhichIcan
imagine itbeingaverystressful environment.GoingtoUni andlearningaboutfilmproductionwill
not onlyhelpme onhowto work ina productionbutalsogive me a headsupon the atmosphere
and the many emotionsthatare presentinaproductionenvironment.Thiswill helpme getusedto
it andit will allowme to work more professionally wheneverIendupbeinginvolvedinaproduction
or if I endup workingonmy ownfilms. If I go to Universityandmanage todo boththese things.I
feel Iwill have reachedmygoal inbeingaresponsible adultaswell asmakingnew friendsandeven
developmyownstyle of filmmakingsothatI can make my ownfilmsandcaptivate an audience the
same way thatfilmhas captivatedme formostof mychildhood. Universitywill notonlyhelpme
developasa filmmakerbutalsohelpme establishmyself bothasanadult andas a workingclass
citizenandbe an independentadult.

Personal Statement My passionandobsessionwithfilmandthe mediaingeneral hasbecome agrowingthing throughoutmychildhood.Itwasn’tuntil acouple of yearsago when I noticedthatmediahashad playedabig part inhowI viewedthe world,the lessonsIlearnedfromwatchingit andhow I grewas a personto where Iam now,It was thenwhere Ibeganto considerthisasa carrierseeinghow it’s onlytopicthat I feel Iam fullypassionateaboutandone I can’tstop talkingaboutinmy personal life. Animatedfilmsfromthe likesof PixarandDisney(FindingNemo,Incrediblesetc) Bothfilms dealtwithreallypersonal themesmainlytodowithfamilyissuesandgrief,andseeingthese emotionsanddowntoearth topicspresentedinananimatedformatwasa verynuancedexperience for me and one that resonateswithme more whenIre-watchboththese filmsaswell asmany others.Some of the earliestfilmsIwatchedinthe cinema,andfora couple of yearswhere animated films.These wouldbe the films thatIwouldbe the onesI see the mostsimplybecause theywere more accessible tothe likesof someone like me,howeverinrecentyearsmygrowingmaturityhas ledto me balancingthatout withmore live actionfilmsthatare way grittier.Ispendmy spare time seeingnewreleasesaswell asoldsimplybecause seeingitanddiscussingitmakesme happy. Ihave had a lotof funediting,filmingandputtingprojectstogether butIhave especiallyreallyenjoyed have learningaboutthe differentstagesand the innerworkingsof afilmhoweverrecentlyIfeelI’ve gottena lotout of analysingmediathenmakingit. It’snotthat I am not at all interestedindoingit but I feel thatImightbe betterthanone thingthan the other.I mightwantto geta jobwriting aboutfilmsandothermediaas a secondcarrieroptionif I evercome to the conclusionthatmaking mediaisn’treallymycallinginlife.Bothmakingmediaandwritingaboutmediaare mymaincarrier aspirationsinlife asaresulton howmedia(mainlyfilm) hasplayedabigpartduringchildhoodand helpedme growasa humanbeing. As I have gottenolderandthe more my love formediahasgottenstrongeras well asmysocial skills I have founditeasiertonot onlycommunicate withpeople better (whichwill helpwheneverIam workingwithateam of youngfilmmakers) Ihave pickeduponthe manydifferentaspectsonwhatit takesto put a filmtogether(eg,cinematography,music,scenecontinuity,editing,)andwhetheror not eitherof these aspectsare done well.Thismakesiteasierforme totalk abouta filmor a piece of mediamore indepthweatherornotif I am watchinganepisode of aTV show or seeinganew release,Icanfindthe right wordsto discussa filmandwrite aboutit. My growingdevelopmentin social skill alsoallowsme topickupnewinformationif eversomeone wantsme todosomething behindthe cameraor someone isinstructingme todosomething.Evenif it’saskill thatImightnot be verygood at firstI feel Iam verygoodat adaptingand learningandthusI can get betterata certainskill.A goodexample Icanthink of is editingusingeditingsoftwhere suchasadobe premiere.Itwasverytrickyto getthe hang of the manydifferent featuresandhow todo everything right.But nowI am more confidentineditingfootagetogetherandnow ithas givenme the opportunitytobe creative wheneverI’meditingprojects.I’malsoveryresourceful andcreative wheneverIam workingbehindacameraand tryingto getthe rightshotas well asmakingsure that a shot isusable inpostand make sure the image isn’toverexposed. Ialsohave some basic knowledge onphotographyandownaDSLR at home.It usedto be a little hobbyof mine andwhile I have grownout of it I’mstill aware on some of the basic tricksof the cameraas well the manystyles and techniquesintosettingupashot.

Recentlywe have beenworkingonthisprogramcalledaftereffectswhichiswhere youcanedit graphicsand otherimagesintoyourfootage andeven make still imagesmove subtly.It’savery complex programandone that is goingtotake me a while tofigure outhow to fullyoperate it correctly,The footage I have editedarounditIfeel showssome of mystrengthsinediting.I attemptedtodo a still frame shotwhere astudentcard wouldfall outof a pocketafterbumpinginto someone. The camerawouldmove aroundthe 2 people whilstthe cardwouldfloatinthe air.All tryingto create the illusionof the image beingcompletelystillwithnomovement.UnfortunatelyI had complicationsontryingtogetthisto workhoweverthe scenesbefore thisshowsashotreverse shotscene whichI directedandeditedmyself.Ifeel thispartshowspotentialinme tocreate somethingthat’s competent.WhileIhadtrouble withthe card I wasable to create a popup phone message inthe same scene thathas beena recurringtrope inrecentmedia.Ifeel if the studentcard was done correctlyIfeel thiswouldhave beenperfect.Ihave alsobeenutilisingcolourgrading more inmy latesteffortwhichIfeel createsadoomand gloomatmosphere. Iamplanningtouse this more oftenwhenImake my shortfilmandwork on the manydifferent aspectsatmydisposal. Recently Iwasassignedtomake a studenttraileralongwitha groupof classmates usingnotesgiven to us byour tutor on the structure but we are alsogiventhe freedomtodowhatwe wantedand howthe trailershouldlookinpost.I usedthisas an opportunityto be creative withthe cameraand utilize the manydifferentcameratricksyousee infilmandTV and I feel the blackandwhite atheistic that I createdinpost givesoff averyeerie atmosphere. We were alsorequestedtouse aftereffects to add ina sky to give off anapocalypticlookwithinthe environmentof the video andwhile Ihad trouble tryingtoblendboththe backgroundandthe imagesIfeel the blackandwhite makesitlook more and more seamless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjWHVXINMus&feature=youtu.be The College Projecttrailer. As forwhat I hope togain bygoingto University,Inotonlyhope to developmyfilmmakingskillsand findoutwhichlevel of the filmmakingprocessIammostgood at,( egCinematography,editingetc) but I alsowantto get a feelingof maturity outof it.Where I’mnow mature enoughto lookafter myself andprovide formyselfandnothavingto relyonmy parentslookingafterme from home.I feel goingtoUniversityisgoingtohelpme developboththese skillsbecause Iwill be gettingtothe nittygrittyon whatit takesto workon a filmandTV productionandworkingonchallengingprojects, while alsolivingawayfromhome andlivinginastudentaccommodationwhere Iwill meetnew people andmeetnewfriends,somethingthatIfeel I’mnotthat goodat butsomethingthatgoingto Universitywillimprove.Livingawayfromhome isgoingto give me a freshnew startin livingonmy ownlike anadultand acting myage. Asfor developingfilmmakingskillsIfeel noone shouldever aspire to be justa director,In myopinionthere isalwaysgoingtobe one aspectof filmmakingthata filmstudentisgoingtobe good at and studyingfilmandTV productionwill alsohelpme discover whicharea onfilmwill suitme most. Workingwithmore complicatedequipmentthatacollege doesn’tprovide will furtherdevelopmyproductionskillsandexperiencingaprofessional environmentwillgive me aperfectheadsupof the atmosphere of a filmproductionwhichIcan imagine itbeingaverystressful environment.GoingtoUni andlearningaboutfilmproductionwill not onlyhelpme onhowto work ina productionbutalsogive me a headsupon the atmosphere and the many emotionsthatare presentinaproductionenvironment.Thiswill helpme getusedto it andit will allowme to work more professionally wheneverIendupbeinginvolvedinaproduction or if I endup workingonmy ownfilms.
