James Whitey Bulger was a notorious Boston crime boss who led the Winter Hill Gang. He engaged in criminal activities including larceny, assault, and murder from the 1970s to the 1990s. Bulger was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List and evaded capture for 16 years before being arrested in 2011 in Santa Monica, California, where he had been living for over a decade with his girlfriend Catherine Grieg. Bulger is accused of involvement in 19 murders. Modern forensic techniques may have aided his earlier capture, but he benefited from corruption within the FBI that enabled his long period evading law enforcement.
