INTRODUCTION
 It is also called as perineal genital
care, involves cleaning the private
areas of a patient.
 Because this area is prone to
infections, it must be cleaned at
least daily ,and more if a person is
suffering from incontinence
EXTERNAL GENITALIA
DEFINITION
 It can be defined as washing the external
genitalia and it’s surroundings with soap and
water or water alone or in combination with
any commercially prepared peri wash.
PURPOSE
 To prevent or eliminate infection,
odor,and promote healing
 Remove secretion and
 To provide comfort
PRINCIPLES
To clean the perineum from the cleanest
to the less clean area.
Follow standard precautions.
Maintain patient’s privacy.
Proximal level of functioning
INDICATIONS
 Patient who are unable to do self care.
 Patient with genito- urinary infection.
 Patient with incontinence of urine and stool.
 Patient with indwelling catheter.
 Post partum patients.
 Patient with injury, ulcer or surgery.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
 Perineal malformation.
 Inflammatory bowel disease

or antiseptic solutions
-Long artery forcep
-Kidney tray
 To protect the bed
 To clean the perineum
To wash the dirty

PREPARE THE PATIENT
 Explain procedure to the patient
 Provide privacy by screening
 Remove all articles which interfere the
procedure
 Give extra pillows to raise head
 Roll the draw sheet to opposite side to
prevent soiling

 Provide dorsal recumbent position
 Remove the pad if any
 Leave the patient alone so that she may pass
stool
 Arrange articles on bed side table

CONCLUSION
Maternal and health care related factors were
associated to the prevalence and degree of
spontaneous perineal tear.
First degree spontaneous perineal tears were
prevalent and suture in a low no.of women
