2. Research on existing magazines and Inspiration for my magazine
I used the following music magazines to guide me
through the creative process of my customized hip
hop magazine (VIBE, THE SOURCE and XXL). I
followed the codes and conventions of VIBE magazine
because of the way each issue has its own distinctive
style and quality.
I researched up on previous issues of VIBE to find out
how they present the information on the front cover.
Once I had done my research I managed to and
create my own cover with the correct information
and features applied.
I have not used the same colour scheme as
VIBE, even though each of their issues have a
different colour scheme considering on who the main
article is about.
3. Q: In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Because I was creating a hip hop magazine I followed all of the conventions that had
applied to this genre of music.
For the masthead I used impact because it is such a bold and stands out. I improvised
on my first flat 2D plan by duplicating it, changed the colour and added a red outline to
make it stand out a bit more. Once I hade done that I overlapped them so there were
one on top of the other, then I moved the back layer so it was positioned to look as if it
had a shadow behind it.
To make the masthead look different to VIBE magazines I incorporated a piece of my
masthead into the larger part of the masthead, by curving the word ‘HYPE’ into the
letter ‘O’ in the word ‘HIP-HOP’. I have linked this design feature to THE SOURCE
magazine’s masthead design.
The sell line for my magazine is ‘The freshest magazine on the block’ which is similar to
THE SOURCE magazine’s sell line ‘THE BILBE OF HIP-HOP MUSIC, CULTURE AND
POLITICS’. I chose this sell line because it goes well with the genre of music and the it
shows that it is a new (Fresh) magazine.
