FDR led the United States through World War II. In his first 100 days as president, he proposed and Congress enacted an ambitious New Deal program to provide relief during the Great Depression. FDR gained support for assisting Britain against Germany by passing the Lend-Lease Act in 1940. The US entered WWII after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. FDR served as president until his death in April 1945, being succeeded by Harry Truman.

5. Harry Truman
 Became President on April 12, 1945
when Franklin Roosevelt died.
 Before that he was Vice President.
 He decided to run again.
 He won and was President until January 20, 1953.
 VP was Alben Barkley.
 Political Party - Democrat.
 WWII was going on.
 Dropped A-bomb on Japan to end the war.
 Originally didn’t want to be President.
 He was called ‘The Man of the People’ because he gave
them what they wanted.

7. George Patton
• He was a man that served in WWII.
• He’s mostly remembered for his unique brand of leadership. It was a role he
cultivated and fully exercised. He managed to obtain a supreme effort from
his men.
• Patton understood that war means fighting and fighting means killing. He’s
the one soldier from the Second World War who stands apart from the rest,
who best personifies that murderous concept, who embodies indispensable
warlike virtues, and the will to conquer.

9. Eisenhower and
Normandy
• The invasion was to occur on June 4, 1944, but a large
storm over the English Channel forced a delay. A
weatherman predicted that the storm would clear up
enough by June 6. Eisenhower took this man for his
word, because he had been daily checking the
meteorologist’s accuracy for nearly a month. Before
dawn on June 5, the storm had not yet cleared. If the
invasion were halted, it could not be launched for at least
two weeks, and the invasion point would probably have
become known to the Germans, so Eisenhower launched
the invasion with the support of his advisers.

13. Appeasement
Neville Chamberlain, Britain’s prime
minister, felt that Germany was treated
unfairly after WWI, and that they had
grievances that needed to be addressed.
Neville believed that if he catered to
demands of Hitler and Mussolini, Britain
could avoid another European war.

17. During the German occupation of Poland, Sendler lived in
Warsaw. When Germans invaded Poland, she began aiding
Jews. She had her helpers created over 3,000 false
documents to help jewish families. She was a Catholic
nurse that smuggled 2,500 Jewish children from the ghetto
single handedly. Irena Sendler was a holocaust hero. She
was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize but lost of Al Gore.
Irena Sendler was social worker who organized and
underground conspiracy of young women to save
thousands.

25. Role during WW2
• Tojo was the prime minister of Japan during the
attack of Pearl Harbor. He saw that Japan would lay
with European dictators, such as Hitler. In
November 1948, Tojo was put on trial as a war
criminal, and was accused of instigating Japan's
aggressive foreign policy in the early 1940's and of
permitting the appalling abuse of prisoners-of-war,
contrary to the Geneva Convention. Tojo was found
guilty and hanged.
