16. On August 15, the people of Japan heard their Emperor's voice for the first time when he announced the unconditional surrender and the end of the war on a radio broadcast.
17. Hirohito’s speech marked what was probably the first time in history that an Emperor of Japan has spoken to the common people. The speech was announced to the Japanese people that the Japanese government had accepted the Potsdam Declaration demanding the unconditional surrender of the Japanese military at the end of World War II.
