The Creational Gifts
People of the Spirit
Jack Hayford
Big Idea
Now concerning spiritual gifts,
brethren, I do not want you to
be unaware.
1 Corinthians 12:1 2
The Creational Gifts
For through the grace given to me I say to
everyone among you not to think more highly of
himself than he ought to think; but to think so as
to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to
each a measure of faith. For just as we have many
members in one body and all the members do not
have the same function, so we, who are many, are
Romans 12:3–8 3
The Creational Gifts
one body in Christ, and individually members one
of another. Since we have gifts that differ
according to the grace given to us, each of us is to
exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according
to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his
serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he
who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives,
Romans 12:3–8 4

with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he
who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12:3–8 5
Think about yourself
What do I like to do?
How can I help?
What am I drawn to?
Is there something I do better than others?
6
Unity and diversity
Romans 12:4–5…For just as we have
many members in one body and all the
members do not have the same function,
so we, who are many, are one body in
Christ, and individually members one of
another.
7
A measure of faith
Romans 12:3 [Do] not to think more highly of
yourself than you ought to think; but think of
yourself with sound judgment, as God has
allotted to each of us a measure of faith.
8
Differences
Romans 12:6…Since we have gifts that differ
according to the grace given to us, each of us is to
exercise them accordingly
9
The Gifts
1. Prophecy
2. Serving
3. Teaching
4. Exhorting
5. Giving
6. Leadership
7. Mercy
10
Gift and instruction
If prophecy, let us prophesy in
proportion to our faith
11
Word Wealth
Prophecies, propheteia. From pro, “forth,” and
phemi, “to speak.” The primary use of the word is
not predictive, in the sense of foretelling, but
interpretive, declaring, or forth-telling the will
and counsel of God.2 It has to do with becoming
aware of God’s undisclosed truths and
proclaiming them as they are disclosed.
12
Word Wealth
Tremendous spiritual perception accompanies
prophetic utterance. On occasion in the Old
Testament a person with prophetic insight was
called a “seer”.
13
Jack Hayford
Prophecy in the Bible is very diverse. It can
function all the way from the arch-Prophet,
Jesus Christ, to the Old Testament classical
prophets, to ongoing prophetic ministries in
the church, to a Creational Gift, to a
manifestation of the Spirit. Therefore, the
14
Jack Hayford
precise understanding of prophecy, especially
in the gift lists, is determined according to
the overall context of the list.
15
Jack Hayford
Therefore, a person with the Romans 12:6
gift of prophecy would be a person endowed
by God with an exceptional ability to
perceive matters, not based on any ministry
office or particular manifestation of the
Spirit. He/she sees all of life with special
16
Jack Hayford
prophetic insight. Some have therefore
renamed this particular Creational Gift
“insight” to distinguish it from the Ephesians
4:11 and 1 Corinthians 12:10 gifts. Such is
linguistically and contextually legitimate.
17
The general nature of prophecy
1 Corinthians 14:24–25…But if all prophesy, and
an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is
convicted by all, he is called to account by all; the
secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will
fall on his face and worship God, declaring that
God is certainly among you.
18
Guideline for prophets
Colossians 3:12–13…So, as those who have been
chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart
of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving
each other, whoever has a complaint against
anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also
should you.
19
Ministry (Service)
“Or service, let us use it in our serving”
20
Word Wealth
Ministry, diakonia. Diakonia occurs some thirty-
four times in the New Testament. Its basic
meaning is “rendering personal help, aid or
assistance to others.” In secular Greek it was used
for the activity of waiting on tables, caring for
household needs or serving in general. It is from
the same Greek root as the word for “deacon”
21
Servant Ministers
1 Corinthians 16:15…Now I urge you, brethren
(you know the household of Stephanas, that they
were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have
devoted themselves for ministry to the saints),
22
Jesus as servant minister
Matthew 20:28…just as the Son of Man did not
come to be served, but to serve, and to give His
life a ransom for many.”
23
Martha
John 12:2…So they made Him a supper there, and
Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those
reclining at the table with Him.
24
Martha
Luke 10:38…Now as they were traveling along, He
entered a village; and a woman named Martha
welcomed Him into her home.
25
Pitfall
Luke 10:39–40…She had a sister called Mary, who
was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His
word. But Martha was distracted with all her
preparations; and she came up to Him and said,
“Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me
to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help
me.”
26
Teaching
“He who teaches, in teaching”
27
Word Wealth
Teach, didasko. In classical Greek the root
meaning of didasko suggested the idea of causing
someone to accept something. It can be
translated “to teach, inform, instruct,
demonstrate or prescribe.” It has as its aim that of
systematically communicating knowledge and skill
so as to develop people. Teachers give themselves
28
Word Wealth
to facts and systematic instruction. In the New
Testament the focus of teaching is how to live out
God’s will.
29
A little teacher in all of us
Colossians 3:16…Let the word of Christ richly
dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and
admonishing one another with psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in
your hearts to God.
30
A teacher’s resource
Luke 4:17…And the book of the prophet Isaiah
was handed to Him. And He opened the book and
found the place where it was written,
31
A teacher’s objective
Matthew 22:35–40…One of them, a lawyer,
asked Him a question, testing Him, “Teacher,
which is the great commandment in the
Law?” And He said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL
LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR
HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND
32
A teacher’s objective
WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ “This is the great and
foremost commandment. “The second is like
it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS
YOURSELF.’ “On these two commandments
depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
33
Greatness
Matthew 5:19…Whoever then annuls one of the
least of these commandments, and teaches
others to do the same, shall be called least in the
kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and
teaches them, he shall be called great in the
kingdom of heaven.
34
Warning
James 3:1…Let not many of you become teachers,
my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a
stricter judgment.
35
Exhorter
“He who exhorts, in exhortation”
36
Word Wealth
Exhort, parakaleo. A calling alongside to help,
to comfort, to give consolation or
encouragement, to appeal to, to urge or to
cheer up; an exhorter offers a strengthening
presence and upholds those appealing for
assistance while urging them to pursue a
37
Word Wealth
certain course of conduct. Paraklesis
(“exhortation”) can come to us by the Holy
Spirit, by the Scriptures or by other people
with this gift.
38
Jack Hayford
Someone with this particular Romans 12 gift
is motivated to see people encouraged
toward growth in the Lord. They are
equipped with the special grace of
stimulating or guiding people (cf. Acts 8:31)
to worthy conduct and personal progress;
39
Jack Hayford
they make doctrine practical. They tend to be
very positive people with a basically positive
outlook on life. They are always interested in
seeing how tribulation or adversity can be
turned into successful living and maturity in
the Lord.
40
Personal and relational
1 Thessalonians 2:11–12…just as you know how
we were exhorting and encouraging and
imploring each one of you as a father would his
own children, so that you would walk in a manner
worthy of the God who calls you into His own
kingdom and glory.
41
Practice makes perfect
1 Thessalonians 4:9–10…Now as to the love of the
brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to
you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love
one another; for indeed you do practice it toward
all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we
urge you, brethren, to excel still more,
42
Not candy coated
Acts 14:22…strengthening the souls of the
disciples, encouraging them to continue in the
faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we
must enter the kingdom of God.”
43
Barnabas
Acts 4:36…Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth,
who was also called Barnabas by the apostles
(which translated means Son of Encouragement),
44
Barnabas
Acts 9:27…But Barnabas took hold of him and
brought him to the apostles and described to
them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and
that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus
he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.
45
Barnabas
Acts 15:39…And there occurred such a sharp
disagreement that they separated from one
another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and
sailed away to Cyprus.
Colossians 4:10…Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner,
sends you his greetings; and also Barnabas’s
cousin Mark (about whom you received
instructions; if he comes to you, welcome him);
46
Givers
He who gives with liberality
47
Word Wealth
Gives, metadidomi. To give, share, impart,
distribute, grant. The word implies liberality
or generosity. It is used to exhort those with
two outer tunics to give one to someone who
has none; to encourage people to give with
cheerful outflow; and to urge workers to
48
Word Wealth
labor with industry in order to give to him
who has a need. It also has the idea of
supporting or spending yourself for someone
else.
49
Jack Hayford
Those with this Romans 12 gift are not just
financial givers; they are more overall
contributors with a grace gift to give
material, physical, emotional, and
psychological support to others. They are
special sharers, sharing of themselves to lend
50
Jack Hayford
supportive encouragement to people. They
stand with and undergird people and
projects; their chief desire is to make sure
people are supported.
51
What he has
Luke 3:11…The man who has two tunics is to
share with him who has none; and he who has
food is to do likewise.”
52
Spiritual giving
Romans 1:11…For I long to see you so that I may
impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be
established;
53
Hard worker
Ephesians 4:28…He who steals must steal no
longer; but rather he must labor, performing with
his own hands what is good, so that he will have
something to share with one who has need.
54
Giving service
1 Thessalonians 2:8…Having so fond an affection
for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you
not only the gospel of God but also our own lives,
because you had become very dear to us.
55
Leaders
He who leads with diligence
56
Word Wealth
Leads, prohistemi. Prohistemi means to be at the
head of, to rule, to direct, to manage or to give
leadership aid. It was often used for people in the
position of superintendence or those who were
leaders in an army, a state or a political party.
Another word might be “facilitators.”
57
Jack Hayford
These Romans 12:8 people are gifted to
coordinate people to carry out activities and
goals. They are particularly gifted at sensing
overall problems, surveying needs, enlisting
others to do work, assessing the time needed
to complete a goal, organizing resources,
58
Jack Hayford
their goals proceeding under opposition and
pressure and delegating authority. They
provide the necessary ingredient for God’s
people to effectively organize and carry out
59
In charge
1 Thessalonians 5:12…But we request of you,
brethren, that you appreciate those who
diligently labor among you, and have charge over
you in the Lord and give you instruction,
60
Leads at home
1 Timothy 3:4…He must be one who manages his
own household well, keeping his children under
control with all dignity
61
Leads with diligence
to do something with intense effort and
motivation—‘to work hard, to do one’s best, to
endeavor.’
62
Showing Mercy
He who shows mercy with cheerfulness
63
Word Wealth
Mercy, eleeo. Eleeo means to have mercy or pity
on someone, to be merciful or compassionate or
to help someone out of pity. In classical Greek it
often described the emotions felt by contact with
an affliction that came undeservedly on someone.
64
Jack Hayford
These Romans 12 people are those whom
God has endowed with a special measure of
faith to emotionally identify with people so
as to show compassion. They are strong
“feelers,” with a marked ability to perceive
where people are emotionally and to identify
65
Jack Hayford
with what they are feeling or going through.
They aim at doing good and helping others
through the motivation of empathy. They
shun hard-heartedness; they’re the “heart”
of the church in a special way.
66
Delivered because of
Mark 5:19…And He did not let him, but He said to
him, “Go home to your people and report to
them what great things the Lord has done for
you, and how He had mercy on you.”
67
Mercy is regarded as what?
Matthew 23:23…Woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill
and cummin, and have neglected the weightier
provisions of the law: justice and mercy and
faithfulness; but these are the things you should
have done without neglecting the others.
68
A sign wisdom
James 3:17…But the wisdom from above is first
pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of
mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without
hypocrisy.
69
Cheerfulness
a state of happiness characterized by being
cheerful—‘happiness, cheerfulness.’

People of the spirit creational gifts

  • 1. 1 The Creational Gifts People of the Spirit Jack Hayford
  • 2. Big Idea Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. 1 Corinthians 12:1 2
  • 3. The Creational Gifts For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are Romans 12:3–8 3
  • 4. The Creational Gifts one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, Romans 12:3–8 4
  • 5. The Creational Gifts with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:3–8 5
  • 6. Think about yourself What do I like to do? How can I help? What am I drawn to? Is there something I do better than others? 6
  • 7. Unity and diversity Romans 12:4–5…For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 7
  • 8. A measure of faith Romans 12:3 [Do] not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think; but think of yourself with sound judgment, as God has allotted to each of us a measure of faith. 8
  • 9. Differences Romans 12:6…Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly 9
  • 10. The Gifts 1. Prophecy 2. Serving 3. Teaching 4. Exhorting 5. Giving 6. Leadership 7. Mercy 10
  • 11. Gift and instruction If prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith 11
  • 12. Word Wealth Prophecies, propheteia. From pro, “forth,” and phemi, “to speak.” The primary use of the word is not predictive, in the sense of foretelling, but interpretive, declaring, or forth-telling the will and counsel of God.2 It has to do with becoming aware of God’s undisclosed truths and proclaiming them as they are disclosed. 12
  • 13. Word Wealth Tremendous spiritual perception accompanies prophetic utterance. On occasion in the Old Testament a person with prophetic insight was called a “seer”. 13
  • 14. Jack Hayford Prophecy in the Bible is very diverse. It can function all the way from the arch-Prophet, Jesus Christ, to the Old Testament classical prophets, to ongoing prophetic ministries in the church, to a Creational Gift, to a manifestation of the Spirit. Therefore, the 14
  • 15. Jack Hayford precise understanding of prophecy, especially in the gift lists, is determined according to the overall context of the list. 15
  • 16. Jack Hayford Therefore, a person with the Romans 12:6 gift of prophecy would be a person endowed by God with an exceptional ability to perceive matters, not based on any ministry office or particular manifestation of the Spirit. He/she sees all of life with special 16
  • 17. Jack Hayford prophetic insight. Some have therefore renamed this particular Creational Gift “insight” to distinguish it from the Ephesians 4:11 and 1 Corinthians 12:10 gifts. Such is linguistically and contextually legitimate. 17
  • 18. The general nature of prophecy 1 Corinthians 14:24–25…But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all; the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you. 18
  • 19. Guideline for prophets Colossians 3:12–13…So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 19
  • 20. Ministry (Service) “Or service, let us use it in our serving” 20

  • 27. Teaching “He who teaches, in teaching” 27

  • 33. A teacher’s objective WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” 33
  • 34. Greatness Matthew 5:19…Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 34

  • 41. Personal and relational 1 Thessalonians 2:11–12…just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. 41
  • 42. Practice makes perfect 1 Thessalonians 4:9–10…Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. • 49. Word Wealth labor with industry in order to give to him who has a need. It also has the idea of supporting or spending yourself for someone else. 49
  • 50. Jack Hayford Those with this Romans 12 gift are not just financial givers; they are more overall contributors with a grace gift to give material, physical, emotional, and psychological support to others. They are special sharers, sharing of themselves to lend 50
  • 51. Jack Hayford supportive encouragement to people. They stand with and undergird people and projects; their chief desire is to make sure people are supported. 51

Editor's Notes

  1. People of the Spirit Jack Hayford
  2. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.
  3. For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 5. with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. We have established that the Romans 12 gifts are the gifts of the Father, commonly referred to as “Creational Gifts.” They have to do with our basic inward driving bent in life.
  6. What do I like to do? How can I help? What am I drawn to? Is there something I do better than others? God built you to do something in his kingdom. There are no useless Christians. You have a place in the church
  7. Romans 12:4–5…For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. No hierarchy of gifts. Each person is vital as is each gift.
  8. Romans 12:3 [Do] not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think; but think of yourself with sound judgment, as God has allotted to each of us a measure of faith.
