The basic understanding of the New
Testament is that God’s gift of salvation
brings humankind union and fellowship with
God through His Son, Jesus Christ. This union
then leads to the granting of various gifts to
His children to equip them for the resulting

service. The gifts are known in Greek as
charismata, derived from the same root as
the Greek word for “grace.” Hence, they are
“grace gifts”—freely bestowed faculties given
out of God’s goodwill to make effective
ministry possible.
